Thanks for this Vid. Fellow Canadian considering a Tesla M3. On the fence about SR+ or Performance. I like the SR+ cause of the Gov Incentive and Green plate perks. Performance is where my heart is but my head says the SR+ makes more sense. The only item I was concerned with, was the handling and cold climate range in Canada. How many Kms are you getting on a morning charge? I heard for battery health it's better to charge daily to 80-90% and if winter range drops another 30% then there isn't much room left.
@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 4 жыл бұрын
I charge to 90% every day just in case I need to do random trips here and there and like the freedom of being about to just drive and not worry about range. Elon said it's more than ok to charge to 90%. Most suggest 80% but I worry about that a bit less than most. I travel 80KM each day and have on average 65% range left each night.

thx for the review! I grew up in Utah where snow was an all-winter issue. I now live in Oregon where most people are not as used to driving in snow. As you pointed out in your video, (thank you), and what I tell my clients: Find an open, safe parking lot to experiment in. Slam on your brakes, experiment and do some doghnuts, etc...Get a feel of what you're up against before you go out there and needlessly reek havoc on those around you cause you have no idea and are too afraid to see what you and your car can do. peace

Greetings from your neighbor behind your house lol. Had to replay the video couple of times because the background looks so familiar haha. Great video btw, I'm actually thinking about buying the exact same car as yours next year or so. Have a few questions since we live in the same city. - Is the 50k price included tax and other fees? - Any services need to be done every few months like a regular gas car? - Do you have any issue with the ground clearance last winter? - Is the insurance going to be higher since it might be considered luxury car? Thank you again for your video. It gives me lots of information and hope you will release more videos about the model 3 in the future. Already want to trade in my 2019 SUV for this but wifey gonna kill me lol. Liked, subcribed and full support man!

Haha. Thanks for the kind words. The one year review I did about a month ago is full of info. Love your support. Here’s a quick bit of info on your questions: 1. The 5k federal rebate will reduce the cost for the Standard Range Plus only. There’s a few hundred dollars of destination fees. 2. I haven’t paid any services fees since owning the car and don’t see any services fees in the near future. I did buy new winter tires and I guess windshield washer. 3. I’ve had no issues with ground clearance whatsoever. 4. My insurance actually went down 2$ a month after going from my Honda Civic Coupe to my Tesla Model 3. Crazy hey. Lol. Love the support. When Covid is done and you want to go for a test drive let me know. 😃👍

Thanks for the video. I assume the weight distribution of the battery helps a lot with rear wheel traction. I drive a Nissan LEAF EV and live in Maine and and also experience about 20-30% decrease in range in winter. The crackling sound as you were creeping along in the parking lot made me cringe thinking about winter coming!

@@TeslaCanadianDad In the UK we just get cold(not like Canada) OR wet - not both (ie little snow). The worst driving conditions is just above freezing with rain where road becomes super-greasy with the salt, and that is quite common. I use the CrossClimate++ tyres all year round as it is this cold wet that makes summer ones plastic and lethal; I have had the delights of helping the stuck 4 wheel drives out of ice because few people use suitable tyres here.

Great informative video. The thing that I like that you are giving us your take on the SR+ , the more affordable Model 3, when all the other videos are all about the full out Long Range and Performance , sure a lot of people can afford and have those versions , but a lot of people like me can only hope to afford the SR+ (hopefully ordering mine sometime this year ) , and people need to know it’s capabilities also. The rear wheel drive comments are a little misplaced with the Tesla Model 3 because the car is so heavy. My honda was ~2200 lbs and front wheel drive. The RWD Model 3 seems better than the FWD Honda because the weight of the batteries (over 4000 lbs!) makes enough normal force underneath the rear tires to make meaningful friction with the ground. Most people drive a RWD truck (where this is almost no normal force on the back tires) and then complain about RWD in the snow.
@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 3 жыл бұрын
Weight of the car helps for sure. My wife’s tiny crappy Nissan Micra is brutal in winter since it weighs nothing but the Tesla Model 3 is also great in snow because the traction control is literally the most responsive and torque-maximizing of any car on the planet. EVs can modulate power in under 10 milliseconds, whereas an ICE car has a control loop that is more like 100-250 milliseconds.

Great video, really helped me. I live in Toronto, so we only get a few bad winter days each season. I would usually go for an AWD car, but with the $5,000 federal incentive plus trade-in value fore my car, the SR+ RWD price point is way too attractive.

@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 4 жыл бұрын
Saurabh Garg if your parking in a garage at home or work or both you would be fine. I only lose around 25% range because of it. I also pre-condition my Tesla every morning with my Tesla Stats app which warms up the battery to reduce lost of range. You also have superchargers all over Toronto if you ever need it on the worst winter days. If you can afford the Long Range, go for that but I wasn’t in a situation to spend 15k more for the LR. Maybe one day I’ll upgrade to the performance model. Thank you so much for watching and really appreciate the comment. Hope you consider subscribing and let me know if you have any other questions. Sorry but I have a different opinion. Last weekend, I was able to test drive a RWD Model 3 in a snow storm, on a highway, with other cars, and it was stressful. Software did an excellent job to avoid wheel slip and fishtailing. But control-wise, I felt like I had no connection with the road, unlike my AWD I drove an hour before. I recommend that anyone looking to buy that car and drive it in harsh conditions (worst than in the video) should test drive it beforehand to know what they're getting into. Also, make sure you are OK with the wipers ergonomics and performance.
@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 4 жыл бұрын
Laurent Vitalis Hey, no worries. Your allowed to have different opinion. That’s what’s so great about this world. However, your comparing the AWD to RWD which isn’t the point. Of course it will handle better. I’ve never had the pleasure of driving a M3 AWD but hopefully one day. If you can afford the 15k increase we have here in Canada go for it for sure. The extra range alone is worth it. However, I’m totally comfortable driving this baby in winter. We just had a time of snow this past 48 hours and had 0 issues. Thanks for the comment and if you do buy a Model 3 I’m sure you will love it.

I gotta say the conditions last weekend were really bad. Maybe not the best situation to try a new car for the first time. If I ever buy an EV (someday hopefully), I really wish I could test drive it beforehand, in such weather. That's, sadly, highly unlikely. Be safe.

Thank you for this video and for the awesome content on this channel ! Subscribed ! I am in a bit of a conundrum. I live in Minnesota with similar winter conditions. And to add to that, I live in an apartment with no home charging available. I do have a Supercharger and some Level 2 chargers 10-15 minutes away from my apartment. But that means, I will have to drive to get to the L2/Superchargers in the snow every time. Buying an LR AWD would probably make more sense for me with respect to range, charging frequency and driving in the snow, but the $9K price increase from an SR+ to LR is just too steep. :( I don't commute much usually, so I guess I should still be good with SR+ as long as I charge every 2-3 days and use winter tires. Thankfully, my apartment has an underground heated garage, so at least I wouldn't have to park the SR+ in the cold outside. In your opinion, do you think it would be a bad decision to get an SR+ given my situation ?
@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 3 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate the kind comment. Means a lot. As for SR+ over LR. Here in Canada because of rebates it’s 14k difference between the two. For 9k I would really consider upgrading. However if it’s just not possible, unless you commute more then 200km the SR+ will be an amazing car for you 363 days of the 365. You might have to charge a bit more during really really bad snowy days. Listen. I still have my SR+ and love it. Would I want more range and faster car. Well yeah but I’m not upgrading anytime soon unless I win the lottery. The SR+ meets all my need and I have to problem recommending it to anyone. Specially if it’s Tesla or something else. Make the jump. You’ll love it

The rated EPA range is based at +20c light winds(Summer weather in Canada) Your range will come back in the spring.Don't charge to 100% unless your going on a trip and don't leave it charged to 100% for no more than a few very short hours.You can charge every day to 80%(Best) 90%(Okay)

I am contemplating buying Tesla model 3 SR+ in March/April this year. This is exactly what I was looking for. Have some questions: 1. Can you buy warranty beyond 4 years? 2. I was told by the Tesla rep that it is recommended to charge for 80% of the battery capacity. Do you think it’s enough to go for long drives( say 400 kms +) given that Canada has less number of charging stations than the states?
@TeslaCanadianDad
@TeslaCanadianDad 4 жыл бұрын
kishore K S on long trips charge to 100%. Not a problem. On a daily commute I charge at 90%. You’ll never actually get 400km. That’s in perfect no wind no climb condition but in Ontario super chargers are popping up really fast. I’m also doing a trip this summer to east Canada and will have no problem charging will all the superchargers. As for the extending warranty. Great question but I’m not sure. I’ll look into it

@@Blah-blah-sure from what i've read, the loss of range happens from many sources. say you charge to "100%" on the meter, the battery will not hold as many kwh's. the battery will have higher internal resistance loss. the battery may require heating to be in temp range (this occurs even if the car is parked somewhere). if you use the heater, thats a lot kwh diverted from range. if you charge the battery, it's slower due to internal resistance. if you are not optimizing, it's easy to lose 50% range in sub -10C temp. my 2 bits :)

Thanks my friend, I have SR+ in UK and I'm down in the southern part and although we rarely get snow like that here... it's nice to know how it handles! We do get icy roads and hardly anyone uses 'Winter tyres' so it makes it a little more scary when we do get the ice. (winter tyres for here - probably only 2 weeks of the year you'd used them). Rain is our issue and lots of it usually. I've driven lots of rear wheel cars since driving but this is the first rear wheel with this much power - so far since August, zero unpredictable events.
