As a retired EE who also loved mechanical things, I lament that my time in engineering was not spent with the likes of Elon or Sandy. You cannot imagine how many times I heard during my career, "well that has never been done" or our competition is not doing that. For every idea there were always 20 people ready to shoot it down.

I think the real genius of Elon is his appreciation for engineering, and his ability to create an environment conducive to it. I think a big key to that is his stated belief that in the long term, the company that can improve faster will always win. This means he created a system for managing frequent changes. Now I'm sure that comes with it's issues, but if you do something really cool, it might end up on the CEOs desk who understands how it works, why it's cool, and if you can make it even better, it might change again in a couple of months. Also, I think he brings his different engineers together, so like Sandy said, that bar might have several groups working together on it.

When thet track started playing, the RTA on the X18 went ballistic from about 125 htz and down. To say it had some "big bottom" would be an understatement. :-)

Also surprised at that--after only a few thousand miles. Take another look in a year or two. Dirt is a precursor to all kinds of corrosion--holds moisture against the metals. They reused the Model Y heat pump parts which is why the orange mold piece is facing up but in this case the tubing doesn’t go all the way up. A great cost saving measure for a lower volume vehicle (better than producing a new part number either for a longer tube or for a different molding to hold it)

That confused me a lot when seeing this heat pump on Rich Rebuilts teardown of Plaid. At the moment I didn't know it was Model Y heat pump repurposed. I thought it was bad engineering insight at the time that caused last minute change that affected mold to be in wrong direction

When I worked with Honda motorcycles, we found that there would be dozens of different speedo cables, (as one example) and the difference would almost always be simply length. Great from the Honda POV, because it increased sales of parts if as a dealer you wanted to keep a good supply of parts. We started a list of those lengths, and tried to cover as many models as possible with the fewest number of different cables. Completely different thinking here.

The Porsche it seems you must wait before it’s starts to accelerate. The suspension comfort seems old school. I have owned many Porsches, a Lamborghini, Maserati, and Aston Martin. I am an EV man now. Nice to fill up at home with my solar panels. Save around $400/month on gas and home electricity. No petrochemical odors. Only maintenance are tires. No oil filters in land fills. Open wheel well in heavy water flow areas ! Someone really dropped the ball. If you take it on a dirty road ( any road that gets crossed by construction or farm equipment) or worse yet a dirt road. the area under the trim panels will get filled up with mud or whatever else is on the road. It looks like they are using the front tire to push air up into equipment bay around the frunk . The weather seals problems are not unique to this particular Plad, I have seen similar problems pointed out on other Teslas . Very disappointing! This type problem should not be happening even on a $5000 cab for a farm implement much less ant car .

On the back seat, more padding on your butt would lower your knees and give thigh support, as long as you have the headroom. Or more padding under under your thighs to help eliminate all your weight being thrust into your butt. Sport seats in a bmw have that extension to pull out to give support to your under thigh, made long drives easy. Always a pleasure watching a tear down to find those hidden gems. Thanks guys!

@@DaveTimperley Elon mentioned that the vast majority of his engineering on Tesla have been Americans. Similar to SpaceX. Although SpaceX is because of the DoD link, you have to be a nationalized citizen or if an immigrant, have to pass the clearance which is very difficult if not a nationalized citizen. Something I dealt with when I ran pass/checks in the USAF for SF-86 clearances which is a minimal when working at SpaceX.

HI I was actually say the exact same thing I bet Ford doesn't need to put a bunch of shims to align the front fender on the F150 and tesla has been making all aluminum vehicles since 2012 I bet they are not going to respond to this and Audi has been making the A8 since 1998 and there gap fitment is excellent.

All that money. Air tank integration with a structural member. But they can't figure out a good inner fender liner to keep road grime and salt spray from coating the sheet metal under the frunk surround panels. How long until that creates a corrosion issue and starts rotting the car away?

Well that says it all in one fell swoop, Sandy is impressed. To tell the truth so am I... Since this exceeds any expectations of a qualified engineering firm specializing in disassembling products for a living. What can we really imagine will follow? After the ride and drive video's we all got a sense of the expertise of this crew. Congratulations on at least taking the bull by the horns and getting out there to give the DEVIL his due and prove to everyone what a star this car really is and how AMERICAN technology still shines brightly to the rest of the world. The Chinese may be coming, but the AMERICAN's did go to China first to show them how to do it. That still counts for something. I for one am thoroughly amazed and impressed that Sandy and Cory got to drive this car for a while to get a true feel for it. Still a shame that it must be destroyed to prove something we all know in advance, Great People do GREAT DEEDS. Congratulations to the Munro TEAM for pursuing their vision yet again.

Tesla is out selling China, in China. When China comes over here, lower prices will sell well, but Tesla will still sell every car they can produce through 2030. After that Tesla will never sell another consumer car.
