Thank you, Mat. Excellent review, as usual. Based on my research Tesla Performance has 500-550 HP, not 450HP. I've found dyno test that showed 520HP and a review from Italy showroom. The reviewer said Tesla rated Performance model in Italy at 550 HP. The battery size should be 75kWh usable with around 83kWh total capacity for the latest models. IMPO, the suspension tuning of Tesla Performance is great. It's a perfect balance between cornering performance and comfort. I wish the steering would be more communitive to have a more direct feel to know what front tires are doing.

Hey CarWow, when you review EVs you ALWAYS have to mention charging time at HPC, form 10 to 80%, NOT peak charging power or AC charging time!!!!!! For example, while both the Tesla and Audi can charge from 10 to 80% in less than 30min, the Volvo takes more than 45min! This really makes a difference when doing long trips

So the 8xx Liters for the Tesla is how much space there is up to the roof or window

For me, all the good things the tesla does is wiped out by the looks and the interior, especially the cockpit. I hate the fact all the controls are done through the touch screen. Just means you can't use it while it's moving, not safely at least. I also hate how the speedo is on the touch screen in the middle of the car, instead of in front of the steering wheel.

This was said alot when iPhone came out. Now you would never buy a smartphone with buttons. You get used to it very fast. Now when I get in a car with alot of buttons/knobs I get anxiety
@robwalker46532 жыл бұрын
@@someguyonaguitar I think that's very different. When driving, you ideally want buttons that you can feel so you can have a quick glance to see where it is then feel, and use while concentrating on the road. You can't do that with a touch screen unless they use a different screen that can mimic the tactility of a button/dial. But even that aside, I don't like how EVERYTHING is done through the touch screen that often takes several screens and buttons, when in a current car they can be done with one lever/switch. That's just really bad design covered by gimmicks so people accept it. It's the same way apple's top left back button standardisation in UI design is now shown to be a terrible design because the phones are no longer sized to be used with one hand.

What software version was the Q4 on? When comparing the capabilities of an MEB car to anything else it makes a huge difference if its 3.0 or 2.x. I saw a test some weeks ago of an ID5 with the 3.0 sofware and it demolished the Tesla autopilot on long range travel in germany (mentioning that because the capabilities of the autopilot seem to vary a lot given the country you use it it) The VW did better on recgnizing speed limits using map topology to plan charge stops and tune regen actually recognizing white vans as vehicles recognizing orange construction site road markings The same channel tested a similar car on 2.7 (I think) and then it was nowhere near as good as Autopilot.

I wouldn't put too much credence in a report on a German car in Germany - they are extremely biased and see Tesla as a MAJOR competitor. But I can imagine Tesla still has quite a few wrinkles to iron out with regards to its autonomy software.

Why is having the option (or indeed the need!) to adjust regen breaking strength via some paddles on the wheel safer than having a consistent & predictable (strong) regen breaking system like the Tesla? Full disclosure; I sold our Q4 to by a Y because it was wallowy in the corners, the interface was a PITA to find anythingno one-pedal regen and it felt like a tank; I constantly felt like I wasn't going to be able to stop it in time even when I was driving cautiously.

Haven't tried any of them but I have to say that reviews I have seen from Autotrader and Autofugehl, both also very respectable channels, suggest that the suspension on Tesla's are pretty bad for a car at that price. Seems that the Y has improved on the model 3 in this respect but for me, that is pretty essential and goes to the build quality of the car. On EV-related tech, seems that aTesla still leads but that is where the most progress will be made and I suspect we will all be fine with range/efficiency/charging speed within a relatively short period of time. Beyond solid state, they are now talking about sodium batteries being pretty close (see Porsche recent investment) etc.

So may be these changes will be added to the MY soon

The one thing you missed in the comparison is the reliability factor! My Audi is the most unreliable car I have ever purchased and it’s supposed to be the flagship model! It’s been in the garage (Caffyns) for more hours than it’s been on the road. Which is why after 16 months of ownership and loosing £65k in depreciation I am getting rid of it and buying a model Y. I love your road tests Matt, but it’s these little things (haha) that make all the difference. Like the 3 year warranty probably due to the unreliability, like the £25 per month connectivity charge compared to £10 for Tesla, like the 2 year servicing cost of £370 when Tesla has none and like the bl***y diabolical back up from Audi when you have continuous problems. I could go on…….

1:12 okay so to make a long complicated problem (that would make a good video all on it's own) very short. Electric cars actually pose a problem for designers. the grill acts as a focal point, something pleasant to draw the eye too. with that gone the front of a car looks featureless, barren, and sometimes a little odd. there are different ways around this that designers are experimenting with, but it's still a challenge that doesn't have an off the shelf solution just yet.

I like the look of the Model Y but my wife and I drove a 3 (closest available last September / October) and she was not enamoured. The lack of (SOME) physical switches for stuff you need to just 'flick' at is annoying. Admittedly she has had Audi's for her last 3 or 4 cars so the eTron Q4 felt very familiar and we ended up ordering a quattro. When will we see it? No idea. I struggle a bit with all of these 0 - 60 performance comparisons.... yes you need decent overtaking performance but if you're driving an electric car and drag racing off the line , well you can hope there are nearby charge points. And (realistically) ANY car that would do a sub 6 second 0 - 60 ten years ago was considered quick. We are splitting hairs when we consider how crowded our roads are now. I know I don't get to use the potential performance of my 5ish second 0 - 60 SUV (petrol) the vast vast majority of the time.

I heard such complaints a lot, so was very sceptical towards Tesla when choosing a car. Yet, the climate control on a Tesla is superior - I use auto mode 98% of the time. 2% for the hot days with passengers - I disable leg vent manually as it steals air from the back vent a lot. Temperature arrows are at the bottom - very easy to find. No physical buttons and no central dashboard are very convenient FEATURES. The driving experience is very clean. I totally recommend trying it a bunch of times before deciding.

Fantastic and unbiased review Matt. Excellent. With regard to looks, and in particular the front of the vehicles, you are correct that looks are a personal opinion. But given that the single biggest cost of producing these cars is the battery pack, you would think that making an EV as slippery as possible would get you maximum value from you battery pack. So a Tesla gives you a grille-less design with a low coefficient of drag and therefore you get maximum efficiency and range from your battery pack. I cannot for the life of me understand why Audi and BMW have gone for these large flat closed grills that must act as a drag on the car and therefore use battery power to push them through the air. It is hurting these automakers as they are having to instal bigger battery packs than Tesla to go the same distance. Bigger battery means much bigger cost and they are already paying more per kWH than Tesla when purchasing them. This all flows to the consumer. You pay more to go less but you get a nice looking front (subjective).

The pricing is never totally fair, when I was choosing my new EV, the Tesla Y was incredibly expensive in leasing. The Volvo and Koreans top versions were around 750 month, Audi 850 / semi full option 950 and Tesla was 1.000 and more. So while I feel the Tesla was technically the best EV, the plain looks, harsh ride, lack of some options and 33% higher price tag turned me off. Still king of the hill Tesla, but I wonder were they would be without the chip shortages

We were only going to sit in the Model Y but ended up taking one out for a test drive. I was concerned re the hard / sporty ride comments however coming from a 2016 Focus RS (pre spring / damper revisions for UK market) just how bad could it be? If somebody is used to a long line of SUV ownership then I can imagine yes they might notice increased firmness but for me this is an improvement and much better complaints wise from the family. The current Model Y setup would tempt me into a more family friendly SUV style of vehicle, something much softer would not do so.
