I own a 2018 BMW X3 M40I and I love it. Fit and finish and performance are great. Premium fuel is recommended (not required). Handling is great. And, in certain states, might be cheaper to own then a Model Y (electric rates vary by state). Now I wouldn't mind a Model S but I don't think the Model Y compares well with the BMW.

One thing to also consider with the cost per gallon is that both of the ICE cars require premium gas which is much more expensive per gallon than the national average. The national average assumes a regular grade gasoline. In Colorado for example, I tend to spend about $2.90/gal for premium.

@@alanmay7929 I respectfully disagree. My Audi A4 Allroad averages about 360 miles per tank on premium. I drive about 500 miles a week and this to me is why electric will be my next car. For your information, because electricity is cheaper in UK, and gas (petrol) costs much more - the saving in fuel cost is around 90%. Cost for kWh = 5p/unit (this is the cheap rate available tarrif) Cos for Gallon of petrol = £5.23 (note this is a UK Gallon). So for people that can home charge in the UK most of the time then the fuel costs are 1/10 for an EV for and equivalent millage car.

@Tom55data
@Tom55data 3 жыл бұрын
@@onlineo2263 my daytime rate is slightly lower on this tariff (14.5p) NOT higher, there is a standing charge in the UK, a fixed cost, that is very slightly higher - but makes almost no difference to cost as the change is marginal and paid for by the lower daytime rate. As I said in in my original comment "So for people that can home charge in the UK most of the time". If you cannot then your costs will vary - but I am comparing like for like with this video since he was quoting home charging too. And , yes I can put 120 miles every day into my car in those 4 hours - since I am very happy to charge my car at night - why not - why is charging at night a problem, I get home , plug in my car and it sorts it all out for me (it is a Tesla - so it sorts it all out for me), I get up and my car has 280 miles (80%) in the "tank". In the UK that is plenty of millage every day for most people.

In this comparison, were the cost and performance numbers for the AWD versions of the BMW and Mercedes?? (I hope so, because here in the northeast, AWD is SO important in winter, if you have a critical job that requires driving in all weather, and the significantly higher up-front cost of the (dual motor) Model Y addresses that... Ben, I had an Audi Q5 Diesel and loved the torque and mileage but hated to learn about diesel-gate. Replaced it with a very well equipped Mercedes GLC and hated the turbo delay and lack of pickup. I nearly got into accidents at intersections because of the delayed response. The fuel economy modifications made to SUVs using 4 cylinders and turbo charges result in supposedly good horsepower but lousy performance. I have now replaced the GLC with a Model Y and love it!!! It has better torque and pickup than the diesel and I can sleep at night with an improved carbon footprint. BTW I drove the GLC from Florida to New England in the Spring and drove the Model Y back and the super charging fees vs fuel costs were almost exactly half. I will admit that the rated range of the MY was not as published when doing 75 - 80 MPH much of the way but the Tesla charging network on the Rt 95 corridor is fantastic.

With the actual purchase price in mind, the Model Y LR AWD is more in line with the X3 M40i which crushes the MY in terms of 0-60 and 1/4 mile.

Nice analysis. I was particularly interested since I own both a Model 3 and a 2017 GLC which I bought new and now has 50K miles. A couple of observations from that perspective. (1) The dealer service experience on premium cars is a nightmare. I had my GLC serviced at a highly rated MB dealer. I felt like, whenever I went in for service, I would hand over my credit card and then bend over and grab my ankles. The number of add-ons, up charges and general BS was obscene. Your price comparison may be accurate, but it doesn't touch the unpleasantness of the experience. (2) Too much is said about range and range anxiety. I charge my M3 in my garage like many owners. My wife now drives the GLC. I haven't even thought about fueling since we last did a trip between New England and Florida. The concept of getting low on fuel in routine driving is a complete non-issue. (3) The need for premium fuel has been noted by others. The PITA to drive up to a pump on a cold, rainy day is so built in to our (non-Californian) expectations that it's hard to imagine never doing that again. (4) To be fair, the DISTRONIC lane keeping and smart cruise control on the GLC is quite good. It is less capable than the Tesla, but it is still able to do most of the heavy lifting on the freeway. (5) The bird's eye view on the GLC beats the Tesla hands down when it comes to getting into a tight parking space. I know Elon says birid's eye is coming, but it should have been done already., It is almost the only thing I miss since I handed the GLC fob to my wife. And, BTW, the MB will be sold shortly with a Model Y in our not too distant future.

One comparison we'll need to make at some point is off-road capability. The T has lower ground clearance than the other two and very stiff suspension and may not be optimal for users who want a compact SUV for things like navigating roads to hiking trails, traveling off the beaten path, travelling to ski resorts. A comparison here might be useful. This doesn't affect typical use, but some purchasers in this segment consider these.

VW are having serious battery and software issues with the ID3 in Europe. They launched the ID3 before it was complete in order to avoid Billions of euros in fines linked to average fleet emissions. Sadly early adopters are paying the price for VW’s haste to market with an incomplete vehicle. Caveat emptor. I really do hope they can produce a competitive, desirable, reliable product, but like so many traditional manufacturers they stuck their heads in the sand hoping they could just pollute the world to infinity while reaping fat profits. If they go the way of the Dodo, kodac, Blockbuster Video and Betamax they will have only themselves to blame.

Agreed and this changes the figures even more over here. Electricity costs around 13 pence, rather than 13c per kWh. Based on 3.6 mi/kWh, to get a similar figure as the BMW/Merc which do 25/27mpg, it would be 91p for the Tesla to cover around 26 miles.. But UK petrol prices are much higher at about £5.25/gall, so at 25mpg you are looking at more like 21p per mile in the BMW/Merc. Which would make the monthly fuel costs £235 based on the same calculations, compared to £45 for electricity costs. Although I would say over 50% of all my charging is done at work, so you could half my bill, and I have solar, so it will probably be even less. I think my electricity bill has gone up about £15/month after chatting the car. I thought I would just throw that in, to make the illustrations relevant to the UK market.

Great video, I really like these comparisons! But it seems a bit skewed. You should be more up front with what kind of equipment level you compare between each model. The gas guzzlers have some different options on drivetrains and features that can rival the Y but will change the price. And it seems to me that you include the capabilities of the full self driving package in the model Y without adding the cost of it in your price comparison. Would be interesting with a comparison that really tried to make the vehicles as close as possible either in price or most metrics of performance/features. All we get now is really that the clearly more expensive car is the better.

Yes, but Tesla is covering that with the expansion of their Supercharger network. They are adding new locations and stalls every year, so they're making it a lot easier to travel around long distance in one of their cars. Other automakers will have to largely rely on 3rd party companies such as Electrify America to build out fast charging for their EV's. So it does take more planning, but it's not impossible to do them. That said, they're excellent commuter cars, especially if you're coming from driving a low mpg car that also takes premium fuel.

This is how you make the comparisons. Cost, Maintenance, Tech, Space, Aesthetics. Hitting exact points a buyer would definitely consider before getting a new car. Performance, Efficiency and Environmental impact are secondary, and still Tesla manages to beat in each and every point quite comfortably. The only concern one could have is about driving experience and build quality. But, every passing day Tesla is improving so much that these factors make no difference. And I bet, there are still many other reasons Tesla that make it feel like you’re experiencing the future. Thanks Ben for the simplistic yet quite insightful and honest content. :)

I like Tesla but this video is very inaccurate regarding the BMW X3. For example the comparative model should have been the X3 m40i with similar performance and price. In tech it does offer Spotify and XM radio built in and local hotspot. In addition it adds a heads up display, adjustable headrests, voice control, etc. Maintenance costs were way of as BMW includes three years free. Really not a reasonable comparison.

I want to start of by saying that i am a huge Tesla fan and of course I’d like to have my own. But I still feel like this video was made with a very narrow point of focus. I understand that this is your opinion, and that is fine. But for example, I am from Germany, where there is no speedlimit, so for me it is important that I can drive 120 mph or faster for a long period of time. I don’t know if Tesla’s still have problems with that, and if not that would be amazing, But that would be an interesting point you could have gone into. Also not everyone is interested in a completely button less interior. My personal opinion is, that buttons make it easier to controll the car while driving. In general, is the Interieur of a Mercedes or even a bmw way better then in a Tesla. You have a vast amount of options you could chose from. This is something a video like this should consider.

I'm a fan of Tesla, but to suggest that the German vehicles require $3000+ in repairs while the Tesla's repairs are covered under warranty is just silly. All three vehicles are covered under warranty. The expected suggested maintenance costs are also quite dubious. It would be fairer to say that the cost of oil changes is offset by the cost of frequently replacing the tires on a Tesla. It will require a few years for a Tesla to realize the cost-of-ownership advantage. BTW, I'm very familiar with my $100 BMW oil changes and the extortionate cost of BMW OE parts.

@@darynclark3014 I've decided myself to go for financing (loan) option. Leasing is not recommended by many as it turns out these vehicles have good resale value. You can check the cars on Tesla portal itself where they're showing used model S, X and 3 for sale. Besides, it heavily depends upon your - finances, usage (miles you drive), no of years you holding onto this car, and cost price you would pay for different options and taxes. Do some research about the prices you see on the Tesla website itself. They even have option to estimate your expenditure over time. Also check rebate and incentives you could get from your state of residence. Run the numbers, and you'd have a fair idea for yourself. And yes, insurance estimates are approximately around $100-120. And about your cash, many recommend to invest (few of them have even bought their Tesla from the profits earned from investing into TSLA stocks), but it's upto you. Join reddit channels and do spend some time on them. Tesla community is quite proactive up there as well. Eventually, no one's gonna figure this out better than yourself. Hope this helps.

Love Tesla. But it seems the cost of ownership analysis is a bit off. My wife currently drives BMW X3, which we've had for about four years. I don't recall any repairs so far, changed oil a few times at about $60 each time. And the X3 was two years old when I bought it. So I am very surprised to see these huge maintenance costs in the estimates. At the same time, the maintenance and repair costs for Tesla seem underestimated. Yes, Tesla does not need oil changes - that's minus, say, $100 a year. OK, maybe some savings on brake pads due to regenerative braking, but those last a very long time on any car and are not that expensive to change anyway. So I am trying to figure out what else you need to do on BMW and MB to amass maintenance cost of around $1.5K per year. If you start adding wipers, windshield washer fluid, and things like that - don't you need to change those on Tesla, too? Coolant? Gearbox fluid? I suppose, but those again last for years and years. Am I missing something here? As for repairs, again, maybe I've been lucky, but in my four or so years, I don't think I had to spend a penny on repairs. I understand if something fails, it may be a costly repair, and something like this may happen every few years, but can't it also happen on Tesla? In fact, didn't Consumer Reports rate Tesla Y as the least reliable car, second only to Range Rover? The way I see it, owning Tesla, you save about $500 on gas per year, maybe another $100 on oil changes, and maybe another $50 on brake pads. So that's $650 a year. At that rate, in about 10 years, you'll make up for the difference in price. Still love Tesla, still considering buying one, but it seems the cost of ownership is not a very strong argument, is it? Oh, I hear Tesla has better value retention, so that's another plus, but that's a somewhat different story.

In the Netherlands the X3 and GLC are easily already $15k more expensive than the Model Y. Add a price of $7 per gallon in the equation, the fact that EV's are exempt from road taxes (which would easily be another $150 per month in savings) and driving an EV becomes a no-brainer. Hence the crazy amount of EV sales we have over here. Diesel is already pretty much dead over here due to taxes, Petrol cars will soon follow within 5 years.

A couple of points/remarks: Why not add the Audi Etron and Mercedes EQC? GLC is about the size as a EQC. (Also in fairness which type of GLC or X3 did you compare it with?) Tesla vs Mercedes/BMW quality of build? Tesla warranties vs BMW/Mercedes warranties. (Including what is covered and what is not). What about also adding the comparison of maintaining their top speeds. Or Completing a certain distance in specific time. Personally pre-Covid I travel allot with a GLC. Mostly long distance (1200 to 1500km per trip). So at a certain moment doing that distance quick and efficient becomes the thing you look for. Personally I still prefer a Tesla for private use. I just have allot of questions about this comparison because if my first hand experience with a GLC And traveling long distance with it.
