Tesla has led the charge into the future of battery-electric cars, but is it really the car of the future? What about hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles like the new 2021 Toyota Mirai? In this video, Roman and Tommy take a closer look at both cars.

I actually really really love when Roman & Tommy play two different sides of a coin when comparing car features. It gives the different preferences an audience member may have some love. @@camberwellcarrot420 Hydrogen can be generated/stored on site at local gas/petrol stations (technically possible with just water and electricity at a cost of course). We are nowhere close to that. @@Menga213 Perhaps, but generating hydrogen is still quite expensive since it doesn't occur naturally on earth as H2. Any H2 in the air would dissipate into space. Keep in mind storing hydrogen is dangerous and costly as well. It is the smallest molecule (2 smallest atom-width) so it tends to slowly seep out of whatever container you may have over time. It's best to generate it and use it instead of long term storage.

When they are actually just worse in the long run, environmentally, strategically and economically. Trust me, Even if USA doesn't get with the program about getting a alternative fuel; the whole world will move ahead without them. Asia is heavly investing in the Hydrogen infrastructure. This fuel cell video was great but it really downplays the benefits of going electric. It is actually MORE convenient for me to charge at home then to stop at a gas station once or twice a week. I also have a 310 mile range on my model 3 which is more then I'll use any day unless I'm going on a road trip. One might say "road trips on an electric car suck" but I've gone on a road trip once a week over 400 miles and charging is really nice on trips. In a gas car it's GO GO GO if you have to wait 5 mins for a pump you're annoyed because you want to get to your destination. In an EV you stop for 20-30 minutes, grab lunch, stretch, go to the restroom, etc and you feel refreshed after getting in the car

@@hoodieman04 I'm OK with that stance, but then we need it to be consistent; just because a subsidy has been around for a long time, doesn't mean it gets a pass if we're going to hold Tesla to a higher standard. If we just look at cars, existing manufactures have been propped up for decades by cheap oil due to government subsidies of oil production; much of it from our own federal government. Also GM would have gone under and might be a non-entity at this point; others might have as well, but GM is the most obvious one.

It's not bad once u get used to it. In one sense it's nice to have everything in one place. It's also cool that you can run so many of the features through your phone. For example, being that the heated seats are run through the computer and not through a button I can warm up the car from inside the house before I leave and turn on the passenger heated seat and the rear heated seats if I'm taking my family with me, all through my phone. Another interesting thing is what do u have to do with basically any car to get the new features that are coming out in the newly released model year? Answer trade in your car for the most part. With my Tesla any time a new feature is released it just does an update and now my car is better than when I bought it. Obviously if it's a physical part of the car it can't update that over the air

@Nomen Clature my Tesla certainly isn't perfect by any means there are many things about that make me shake my head about the car. I just feel like a lot of people have misconceptions and opinions that aren't founded in actual ownership experience so I try to share my experiences, positive and negative. And my experience has been overall positive and enjoyable and it makes me question when people are fear mongering about range and charge times and the screen and everything else without actually living with those things on a day to day basis. I had severe range anxiety until the first time I actually drove the car. Once I realized how it all works that anxiety was gone. Once I realized the benefits of being able to refuel at home instead of having to go wait in line a crowded gas station after work when it's minus 30 outside. My charging concern was gone. Once I lived with the screen for a couple days I was no longer concerned that I didn't have buttons or a gauge directly in front of me. That's just me and my opinion based on my actual experience. I was concerned about those things before as well until I actually owned the car and my fears were proven to be unfounded.

The exhaust of a hydrogen fuel cell is water and hydrogen doesn't naturally exist anywhere on earth. Correct? Hydrogen is an element and to get hydrogen you need to take a compound such as water (the ash of the hydrogen fuel cell) and split that into the elements that make that compound. IE. hydrogen and oxygen. Isn't that like taking the byproduct of normal combustion, ash and turning that back into coal, oil or firewood? Surely, you have to put more energy into that process than you get back out as hydrogen?
@javiTests
@javiTests 3 жыл бұрын
I think hydrogen is more convenient for drivers (if the infrastructure was the same as gas stations) than electric cars nowadays. But the problem with hydrogen is that the whole process is not very efficient. From getting electricity to generate hydrogen, then compress it and use it in the car, if I remember correctly, it was around 40% when an electric car is more like 70% or so. I think when the battery technology allows a driver to charge an electric car in 10 minutes for 200 miles/300 km, then the whole hydrogen thing would be obsolete. When that would be? I have no idea...
@toddwright662

One fills in 5 min and cost $75, and you have to drive to the filling stations, if there were any; the other fills overnight while your sleeping and cost about $10. The only disadvantage of the Tesla is that you wait on long trips to charge for 30 min to 40 min every 3 to 4 hours of driving. The disadvantages of hydrogen is the lack of infrastructure and the cost of fuel. Filling stations are prohibitively expensive to construct and service and supply with H2 which is probably the reason they have not been built out. I am not sure why Toyota cannot see this ship has sailed.
