Tesla Motors Model S -- Dead 12v Battery -- What to do to get back up and running (Roadside Service)
========
A Good Jump Box can be found here: amzn.to/3Or9LqE
The Tesla Model S is one of the most advanced vehicles on the road. Yet, it still uses a old style 12v Lead Acid battery to power the Auxiliary Electronics, as well as used to "wake the car up" when it's time to drive off.
If your 12v Aux battery dies, your stuck. This video will show what to do to get your Model S running again to save you from a Tow Truck Ride.

lv system in an electric car consists of safety circuits and other electronics. before the HV battery turns on, the safety electronics needs to check the conditions of HV battery so that's why it needs another source. After the HV battery is checked by the safety circuits, the 12v power is supplied by dc-dc converter I believe. that's how we designed formula student electric car so I guess tesla has the same design

depends what you plug into. In order to drive it at all, anywhere from 30 seconds to a hour. Depends, plugging into a 120v outlet, or a supercharger that can recharge the pack in 20-40 minutes, or 66 hours on a 120v outlet. range is 200-300 miles depending on if you get the small or big battery.

There are even smaller and lighter portable generators available. But I've found none as efficient as the Honda EU2000i. 9 or 10 hours on 1 gallon of gasoline at 1/2 load; less if the full 1600 watts of continuous load is required.Plus the electricity produced is of a high quality due to the inverter process built in. No, I'm not a Honda shill, just a sailor who likes small light generators to supplement the solar when needed.

Ironic you say that, I just tested the IQ2000 by Generac, and the EU2000 by Honda TODAY! I have a whole series of videos uploading, RIGHT NOW. Please watch once they are uploaded and live (Ready tomorrow). Short story though, the Generac IQ2000, is quieter, more fuel efficient, AND, most importantly, plug and play ready for Tesla Charging, where as the EU2000 will require a "Generator Hack Plug" to trick the car's ground safety to allow charging.

My Tesla is now one and a half years old and I got the "12 volt battery needs service - replace battery soon". The car is charged every night and has never been run to flat. Kman - Do you know if these terminals go strait to the 12V battery, or are they fused? I'm down south and we are getting ready to hunker down for Hurricane Irma. In case we loose power it would be nice to use my 85D with an inverter to power my fridge and a few misc loads. I calculated a 1500 Watt inverter could run my fridge/freezer for days. I read that the DC/DC converter is rated at 2500 watts, so it would seam that running a 1500 Watt inverter right off these posts should not be a problem. I do have a camping generator that will do it, but I hate to have to run that thing 24 hours a day feeding it gas. Hopefully, Irma will miss us, or power will stay on, but just want to be prepared .

Makes sense to have a 12v lead acid battery to be compatible with all charging systems. You don't want a system that is incompatible with road side assistance vehicles. What surprises me is that the front panel is not hinged with a locking mechanism released from the inside. This means ANYONE can pop off that front panel and either drain your battery or maliciously short it out (Tesla ownership jealousy). Given you pay $60k for this vehicle, another $200 added to the price for decent security access to the battery would be a no-brainer.
@babybirdhome
@babybirdhome 10 жыл бұрын
But to do that, they'd need door handles that don't require power to be accessed, and they'd need to be mechanical latches instead of electro-mechanical, and there'd need to be a keyhole and a physical key to unlock the door. It's probably pretty safe without adding those things and losing the neat features of the Tesla, since it's unlikely that anyone would go to so much trouble AND know how to do this AND not get any funny looks about messing about with a car in a parking lot where they're not getting in or out of it or opening anything.

Without knowing the exact construction of the tesla, I can say that car electronics are really robust. I think they must be by law. So all the car electronics must have reverse polarity protection, over voltage protection (up to 48V) and have to stand that indefinitely. Also the need to have protections against shorter events, like a over voltage spark from ESD etc. Those electronics are extremly rugged, and not easy to damage, at least not by some random jerk. A Diode in series would not be very likely because of the voltage- drop at high currents, a transistor based reverse polarity protection is more likely.

Would be a good idea to provide some isolating insulation on both these terminal. The positive (red) would benefit from a battery isolation cover. Not too expensive from an auto accessory shop...........Whilst the negative, (black)....which appears to be just a protruding threaded stud...............can be easily covered with a length of rubber or plastic hose......................or even the outer sheath, (insulation), from a length of cable. You could, of course just choose to insulate / isolate one of the terminals. The negative (black), would be the easiest and would take only seconds. Best thing would be a tight fitting length of outer sheath insulation or hose..................tight fit and with some grease in it for good measure........

I'm surprised that a Tesla has a conventional 12V lead acid battery. Since it shouldn't need a lot of power to run the electronics, I would think they would want to use a lighter battery, maybe a half dozen 18650 cells in a mini-pack. After all, that's what 18650 cells were originally designed for. I'm also surprised that they would bury the lead acid battery in an inaccessible place where it's not easy for an owner to replace it. It's one of the few things an owner should be able to service on the vehicle.

A Tesla technician showed me that it is easy to pop out the nose cone by sitting on the frame above it, which distorts it enough to loosen it. Just hold onto it to avoid damaging the sensor wires. (The car in the video is too old to have the parking/AP sensors that later cars have.)

@Matt P If it’s a nose cone car, take off nose cone, use screw driver to pop hood by stretching the frunk cable on mechanism. Some early model s’s had a manual drink release lever by the passengers foot well, on the inside. If it’s a refresh model s design, MX, M3 or MY, there is an external pull cord by the front grille, basically this means the drunk is NOT a secure compartment.

What If your 12Vbattery says replace battery, But Its not dead yet, can you just recharge it with the charger and don’t need to replace? My trunk opens and close normaly, But In the app and Its open, and gives beep beep sounds, is it because of the 12V battery, autopilot is off too? Seat belt at the back right side is wet when pulled out to wear?
@KmanAuto
@KmanAuto 2 жыл бұрын
When the car says to replace, your going to want to do so ASAP. The battery is already worn and capacity is lost. It will no longer take a charge. The car will mostly be operating through the DC to DC converter and you may notice excessive range loss after vehicle is parked. This is due to the car staying awake to keep the dc to dc converter going. Once the 12v gets bad enough, it will discontinue doing this, the car will then not be driveable, and you may no longer be able to open your doors or access anything. We seat belt, if your vehicle has a sun roof that opens, it may be leaking. Your vehicle needs service ASAP

@@KmanAuto : I have an earlier version with no autopilot. The main battery as well as the 12V battery had discharged, and the car was locked preventing any access or charging. I called up Tesla's roadside assistance, mobile service, as well as their service center, they all asked for car to be towed to a service center. With your instructions, I was able to access the 12V battery and get things going again.

This is why you shouldnt put information online based on "what you heard." You simply open the frunk. Snap off the plastic trim and rubber seal. There are 4 bolts holding the plastic frunk compartment in place. Remove that and the battery is easily accessible. It likely does take a half hour but no specialized tools are needed.

Is this the Proceedure recommended by Tesla, in the manual???? It Seems Very Strange that this would be a solution to a No Start Or No Go situation. While true, on a new Model S, where the nose cone has not yet been removed, I've found the clips to be much to stiff to safely remove (accept in emergency) without a card or something to wedge in to pry it open a bit. Once it's been removed and replaced one or two times, the clips are more forgiving.

The frunk is likely electrically opened though (like the doors), which wouldn't help much if the 12v battery is dead. BMWs had (probably still have) batteries that were in trunks that could only be opened with a solenoid, so if the battery died, you had to use terminals under the hood to jump them.

This will power up the computers so you may gain access to the vehicle, and get it in tow-mode if necessary. Or, if the 12v fails, it will get the computers powered up so the DC to DC converter can kick in to support the 12v systems so you can drive home/to service. If the computers power up, and you still cannot drive, it is likely the DC to DC converter is dead, or you have High Voltage Battery issues. What specific error codes is the car showing you?

***** ***** I have to wonder why they dont use a Lithium 12V Battery such as a LIFEPO4 Battery for the low voltage system, LIFEPO4 is basically a direct droppin for a leadacid but isnt as temperature sensitive, way lighter, and has higher current ability and capacity. If they cant remove the low voltage system, atleast use a better battery lol. (couldnt reply direct to cotxe11's comment for some reason)
@KmanAuto
@KmanAuto 9 жыл бұрын
***** Legal requirement that the High Voltage battery is seperated. Now, LifePo4 would be ideal, if everyone lived in the south. Problem with using Lithium for Aux, is that it cannot be charged at or below freezing. Doing so, electroplates the internal of the battery resulting in permanent capacity loss. And since the 12v always has a drain on it, when the car turns on to charge it up, if it's below freezing out, the battery would be damaged. That means, the 12v battery would then need it's own battery heater (AND COOLER!) and warm the battery before charging it, wasting much power.
@KSSilenceAU
@KSSilenceAU 9 жыл бұрын
***** thats a good point, But a decently well insulated 12v would pretty much fix the issue unless the vehicle is siting for extended periods such as days or more without being plugged in, however the majorly increased "usable" capacity of the 12v lithium battery would mean that it wouldn't need to be charged nearly as frequently, and if telsa is leaving the HV system energized anyway then the 12v would be basically being floated so it wouldn't matter if it was cold then. Also even lead acid / Calcium batteries hate the cold, and the cold basically quenches their ability to provide much more than a trickle of power, so if it got really cold you could have issues trying to wake the vehicle up if the HV system and DC-DC Converter wasnt already supplying power. If the battery is insulated enough then very little energy would be needed to warm it enough that it can charge, even if its a slow charge. Once the battery charges it will begin to self heat somewhat. But this is only really an issue if you live in a very cold climate where most owners probably do not.
