@@davieee1168 serious questions: Is building a Tesla and its batteries that much worse on the environment than building any other car? Does the 1 time impact of mining whatever is needed for the batteries affect the environment more than the decades of pollution created in the lifetime of every gasoline powered car? And what do you mean by them not being practical? From what I've heard they're very roomy on the inside since the space taken by the typical drivetrain and power plant is freed up. And who drives more than 200 miles a day? Unless you're taking road trips all the time, there shouldn't be any worry about running out of power during a typical week.

@@myetoob23 The INCREDIBLE tonnage of earth required to be mined to create just one battery is staggering. The rare earth metals needed are just not easy to get to. And how much oil/gas must be consumed to to extract them? Then, when the battery is at end of life, it must be disposed. These ARE NOT good for the environment. And the rate at which they will accumulate will only accelerate. Regarding range issues, when new, is not as much a problem. The batteries, however, lose range as they age. To make matters worse, EVs operating in cold climates become FAR less efficient, making older EVs in colder climates essentially totally impractical for many. I know because my friend in Texas bought a Model X from his friend in Wisconsin who just couldn’t use it as he needed to in the cold. Super fast? Yes. Practical for drivers in the cold? Not as much.

Not sure people understand....electric=instant peak torque, gas engines need to rev to get into power band thus creating slight delay to peak power,like a p51 mustang going a f-14,no apples to apples once electric is involved.

Pretty decent effort by the Vette.
@bradleyvantassal83282 жыл бұрын
@MrGriff305, your comment shows your ignorance. All true "gear heads" embrace a vehicle no matter what powers it. And considering one is AWD and one is not makes quite the launch advantage. And to say it wasn't even close is just plain stupid. Not to mention it's a C7, not even the newest hotness, as you referred to it. Oh, and a little heads up. This outdated Vette stills laps Nurburgring over 30 seconds faster than a Model S Plaid.

The part that hurts for the Corvette is, while its engine is dealing with extra wear from the strain of the high rpm run, the motors on the Tesla are fine, aside from a little extra heating from all the current running through them.
@jpguthrie66692 жыл бұрын
The motors and batteries get hot, they require a liquid cooling system to keep them from getting too hot. One of the difficulties of designing electric car motors is the cooling system. The engine in the Vette will still be running at near maximum power in 5 years, the batteries in the Tesla will only be putting out about 70%. In 10 years the Vette will probably still be running strong, while the batteries in the Tesla are running at about 30%. A new engine for a ZR1 costs a lot less than batteries for a Tesla S Plaid. You can overhaul a ZR1 engine for about one-third the cost of a new Tesla battery.

@@spacey22 I can tell from your comment you have never worked on cars 100k is nothing for a modern internal combustion engine, I've put over 250k on my Chevy pick up with routine maintenance. as for your lithium batteries how do they hold up in extreme weather conditions? not good, oh and ever notice how your cell phone and laptop lose about 50% of their capacity after 5 years whether you use them or not. Batteries are charged by electricity that you need to pay for approx. 30kw/hrs = 1 gal. see what that cost or did you think it was just magic when you plug it in and the electricity appears out of nowhere.

Hearing petrolpurists talk about 'soulless' EVs feels for me like a repeat of history. When cars were invented horseriders had the exact same argument about a horse vs a lifeless machine. You can only chuckle reading back on their arguments back then. What the naysayers don't realize is that the petrolcars are at the end of their era, having evolved into the most awesome they can be, and the EV's are just at the start of theirs. I have no doubt that in time EVs will deliver on all fronts and then a whole lot more we can't even imagine right now. Embrace change people, life is more fun that way and you can appreciate a true genesis when you see one.

This is why a true race to see which car is actually faster with the least amount of margin for error (tires, drivetrain) and a higher top speed cap is a 40-160 run. 0-60 and 1/4 mile times don’t mean anything when trying to prove which car is truly faster.

That first race with the 17 second Mustange. Ack in the day, I had a stock 68 Buick Riviera (4,470 lbs) that ran 15.05 at Fremont CA.
