Tesla Roadster, The Most Misunderstood Tesla? Future Classic, Doug Demuro was wrong

This video hilights the unique features of the Tesla roadster and demonstrates the substantial differences between it and the Lotus Elise that it shares 7% of its parts with. The roadster was produced from 2008 to 2011 and 2000 vehicles were produced. This is a 2011 roadster Sport v2.5. Prior to this vehicle i owned a Nissan GTR and i have to say the roadster is every bit as fast to 130mph, costs almost nothing to run and has been an amazing vehicle. I have nothing against a Lotus Elise, however i personally believe a lotus is a much more hardcore vehicle than the Tesla roadster, for some this is a preference however the unique character of the electric drivetrain and unbelievable performance on tap is not comparible with Lotus in any way. The car is lightning fast with 0-60 time of 3.7 from every single set of traffic lights. Ive had zero reliability issues with the car it has been simply sensational. If you would never buy a Lotus you should seriously consider trying a roadster sport, they are so completely different in both driving experience and ownership experience you will be pleasantly surprised. The roadster has now become very collectible due to its rarity in the UK with less that 40 roadsters and only 14 sport versions in the UK. Ive never known a car draw so many views and crowds when its out, people respond to it so positively and usually want a photo, especially when its on charge. Usual questions asked, how far does it go (244 miles) how fast etc. It may be twice the price of a Lotus but its more than twice the car and ten times more relevant to the modern low carbon emission world. No road tax remember. No fuel bill and endless smiles. The car takes on a different character with the hard top fitted and when convertible offers an outdoor driving experience like no other car. Even by today's standards, the tech inside that car seems on par with medium range cars in terms of technology. I can only imagine how futuristic this car must have been back then!

wavey61 it is, it feels like the perfect mix of old and new tech. Still feels cutting edge compared to just about everything.

Great video. I'm one of the lucky people who own one of these. I drive it every day and so far there have been no significant reliability issues... It's very quick to 80mph but not very exciting after.

Had my 2.5 for a few years now. Had it in the body shop a couple of times-backed into somebody, then somebody backed into me. PEM failed this year, which was a costly repair. Haven't sprung for the battery upgrade, but I can still charge it up to about 220 "ideal miles" in range mode. I'm really wishing I could use the Supercharger stations. It's the only Tesla model that can't, and it's the main shortcoming of the car IMHO. Otherwise it's a tremendously fun car to own and drive.

Zobeid Zuma there's no reason Tesla couldn't offer a 50Kw Supercharger upgrade for the car, they are just being difficult.

A really brilliant job, quite professional... the video, as well as the roadster. I'm waiting for the Roadster 2 with Plaid, as alluded to, and will compare it to the Porsche Mission E allegedly to arrive in 2020, with numerous challenges ahead. DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WITH THE BATTERY UPGRADE? If you do, ask them to do an overview like this and maybe drive it for a couple hundred km to show off the range potential.

eternitynaut the potential range of the 3.0 battery is 340 miles. I'd expect to get that easily at 55mph.

I'm considering getting one of these which is a 2009 on 25k miles and still has >200 miles range. How have you found reliability and servicing costs?

Pete James mine has been totally reliable in 7 years. However I've seen people buy cheap ones and have very expensive repair bills. Everything is cheap to fix except Battery and PEM. Cheap as in under £1000. If it's all working, there's no reason to worry. You can service it yourself very easily. Search here for roadster pem clean video

Its a Pioneer Carplay/Android Auto system with DVD and DAB. Very appropriate to the vehicle and utilises the original Amplifiers
