My 2024 Tesla Model Y on FSD 12.3.3 did something amazing this evening. I picked up my son up at the airport, and had it navigate to his home. He lives on a street that continues around a corner from his home, and ends in a cul-de-sac; and his driveway is on the left side of the street as you approach it. On previous versions, it would have ended navigation and stopped in the street across from his driveway. This time, it didn't stop at his driveway, and I thought it had somehow screwed up the house number or something. But I let it go on to see what would happen; and what it did was continue around the corner, drive on to the end of the cul-de-sac, do a U-turn, and return to his driveway-but this time on the side of the street where his driveway starts!

@@rogergeyer9851 What was amazing to me was the combination of several behaviors FSD was not capable of previously. First, unlike any previous version, FSD's intent was obviously to stop on the side of the street the destination address is on. Second, FSD apparently knew that although it was out of sight, there was a cul-de-sac around the corner where it could make a U-turn. Third, it executed the U-turn, which no prior version has been able to do. This allowed it to approach the destination address on the correct side of the street. Achieving "normal taxi behavior" on every street, road, highway or freeway in the U.S. and Canada, paved or not, mapped or not, at speeds up to 85 MPH, day or night, in most weather conditions, is generally considered one of the most difficult computing problems remaining to be solved by AI. It's not there yet, but it's getting closer. It's achieved this level of performance in about a year. You may end up being right that it'll be another six years before Tesla achieves Level 4 autonomy, comparable to "normal taxi behavior"; but given that Tesla has data and videos from a billion miles of Teslas driving with FSD engaged to use for training FSD, and are probably racking up another several hundred million miles a month with the FSD free trial; and Tesla has stated that they're no longer compute-limited, I believe you're mistaken.

This took place on a 6 lane artery within a city. FSD had changed lanes from the center of three lanes to the right lane in preparation to turn into a parking lot behind a car that was also turning into the lot. There were several cars waiting in the opposite turn lane preparing for an opportunity to turn left into the same parking lot. The car ahead of me made the turn and FSD slowed and then surprisingly stopped and waited for the first car in the oncoming lane to go ahead of me even though I had the right of way. There were several cars coming up behind me that would have prevented that car from turning for some time had FSD not allowed it to go. It was what I would have done but I never expected FSD to behave as a gracious driver. Another unbelievable event occurred late at night after a heavy rain. I was travelling in the center lane at the speed limit of 40mph. The cloud cover literally made the night appear as dark as a black cat in a coal bin at midnight. Suddenly FSD hit the brakes for what appeared to be no reason. The only thing I could see in front was a car turning across the road more than a block ahead. I was baffled until I saw some motion off to my right and I realized a person had walked across the road no more than fifty feet ahead of me. The person was dressed completely in black and was effectively invisible to me. I have never had an accident in 62 years of driving and if not for FSD, my first accident would have killed that person. I did not see anything until I was passing by him/her. FSD saved his/her life and my soul. I had hoped that FSD would extend my ability to drive but I never would have believed anyone who described what I experienced. The difference between Autopilot and FSD is like the difference between riding with my grand-daughter as she is learning to drive and watching FSD drive exactly as I drive. The haters and the doubters are missing the single most amazing experience that most of us will have in our lifetimes.

Sam- have been using FSD for 3 years now- bought it w the car. Love it. Of course I'm a Silicon Valley guy - in the industry - so I marveled at the original ability (event w the gaps)... I have 12.3.3 - just moved up from 12.3..... WOAH- this is HUGE. Just drive from Tahoe Palisades Skiing- 3.5 hours portal to portal without an intervention. Stunning. I have massive roadwork on my ride home in the Santa Cruz mountains - that would cause my v11.x FSD sw to crater - and I mean crater. NO MORE - this is Stunning! Thanks for your channel Sam!

We have used FSD during this trial period several times. Only two glitches: one instance of failing to recognize a "keep moving" sign on a right turn into protected lane (the car stopped for the red light before proceeding with the right turn on red) and the other an unnecessary slowdown on the interstate for a work zone that had already been cleared. Otherwise, FSD performed superbly.

FSD is not ready yet. It has improved. However it's still making a lot of simple mistakes. On the interstate though, it's doing pretty damn good job on long trips. Passing cars and changing lanes in it's own pretty well. However it keeps trying to go into the left lane with NO TRAFFIC around it. It also keeps trying to get into a Right Turn Only lane instead of staying in s middle lane at intersections. There is one intersection that the navigation is turning left. But the car always signals and tries to turn right. That single intersection always does this. It also would have destroyed my right rear rim 100 times over on right turns at traffic lights with curbs close to the roadway. I've had to intervene on those a TON!

My observations: Good: 1. Recognizes bike, emergency vehicle, pedestrians and yields for them. 2. Passing and yielding on highways smoothly. Bad: 1. Getting off highways sometimes it doesn’t slow down to a safe speed. 2. Something it gets lost in tricky intersections. I’m amazed and highly impressed. FSD rocks! No LiDAR. No Radar. Just cameras. It super cool!!!!!!!! I recommend they cut the price to make it easier to afford. Go for volume sales and not larger markups.

Yes, and copying the best human drivers with the mass of input Tesla collected is ethically and morally better than humanities and their hypocritical answers that no algorithm ever can handle any better. Most serious drivers care for LIFE of as much as possible but leaving home you have already a rest risk you have to be responsible for YOURSELF! That’s LIFE and no idiot US legislation asking to not dry your cat in the microwave! I used it 3 times today and had to disengage all three times (U-turn on a divided road, stuck at a traffic circle, and crossing two lanes of traffic to make a turn). It’s good but has a long way to go. Also I end up disengaging a lot because it takes way too long to make decisions, like in the u-turn example you showed. Who is going to sit and wait 30 seconds in the middle of the road for the car to turn.

It goes slowly because if it zipped then you wouldn’t be able to process what it’s doing and take over if you needed to. Instead of disengaging just press on the accelerator to get it to go faster (reassure it that you agree with what it’s doing).

Yes. The progress is nice to see, but it will take lots of TIME and data to get to practical consistency for large robo-taxi networks with better than human driving. Viking and his ilk can hype it being ready this year all they want. Just like Musk. It doesn't make that credible.

3:25 it definitely does not react to gestures. It purely reacts to movement of objects. If a pedestrian walks up to the curb, or slightly enter the street, but then stops the car will react to it and continue and give room if needed. It is irrelevant whether the person tries to wave the car through.

but how can you know that ? unless you are privy to the contents of Tesla's training data (just passing 1 billion hours) - If there are pedestrians making hand signals in the training data then I see no reason why the car should not recognise pedestrians making hand signals in real time - in fact, it seems that further testing has not been able to reproduce this behaviour but that simply means that we need more training data with pedestrians making hand signals.... The cars are no longer driven by some expert system with a bunch of rules telling it what to do in any given situation, it is neural net all the way down - it learns in a way much more similar to a human except that it will ultimately have a much deeper and broader set of driving experiences to draw upon than any human could acquire in a lifetime of driving. At some point in the not-too-distant future, I predict that this will involve more interactions with pedestians.

@@julesgosnell9791The person's hand gesture is irrelevant to car proceeding or not. It's based on object avoidance. If they are not stepping into the traffic then it's safe to go. Even Robo taxi wouldn't need to see a person's hand waving for a ride the old fashion way. People would need to call via app like Uber to provide ID/payment.

@@Trust_but_Verify AFAIK the version being tested is based on a neural net not on heuristics - "object avoidance" is a heuristic. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to train a Tesla RoboTaxi to respond to a pedestrian hailing it by gesture. This is the whole point of replacing heuristics with a neural net - to be able to behave more like a human.

U.S is the leader in innovation - Amazon is pioneer in e-commerce, Google in search engine, Facenook in social networking, Apple in Iphone and now Tesla in Fsd. I think Tesla launching Robotaxi in august is the best time to establish their moat. It will clearly show that they have no competition and shift the branding to treat them as more of a tech Ai company rather than Ev only.

Add another 5 years, and you're likely in the ballpark. It needs to be VERY consistent and handle LARGE networks to be highly practical / profitable. Viking calling normal driving behavior for a human "shocking" is just the usual fanboi rhetoric. And I'm a fan of Tesla and automated vehicle technology -- but I try to be realistic / objective.

We have two M 3 Teslas in the family (and shares of Tesla stock I might add) and are using our free month of FSD V12. It is indeed remarkable however it still occasionally does weird unsafe things. Once it jerked the wheel towards the curb when there was no obvious reason to do so requiring a takeover. Another time it was confused by a stopped vehicle on the shoulder a safe distance out of the traffic lane and braked hard and suddenly. Fortunately there were no closely following vehicles. So though it may soon come to pass, right now I would not get in a Tesla without a steering wheel and a way to take over the car.

@@whowhy9023 I needs to get down to zero interventions so relative to that there is a fair way to go. Intervention is still common. The rate of progress seems impressive. Do I see a little increase in the rate of increase also (makes sense as you say they have now computers). Still it is possible they hit some new restriction as they have before and the complete process takes another year or two or even three or four. I'd be truly happy with one year and to have it at the time of the robotaxi reveal (at least to a competent human standard) would be GREAT! So I'm not saying it will not happen just that the chances are not 100% I give them a (pulls figure from special place) 25% chance for Robotaxi 40% for about 12 months and say 60% for within 2 years. Just my best guess.

The frequent outcome of a driver falling asleep at the wheel is either running into another vehicle, possible head-on if they're on a undivided road, or running off the road at highway speed; with a good chance of injury or fatality of themselves or others in either case. According to NHTSA, the better part of 1,000 people die in the U.S. alone each and every year as a result of falling asleep at the wheel. Meanwhile, the typical outcome of a driver falling asleep while on Autopilot or FSD is driving safely it its lane, then being awakened after a fairly short time by increasingly intrusive alarms, and continuing safety to their destination. There's pretty good evidence that it isn't, in fact, a deadly combination. Teslas with FSD engaged have driven over a billion miles in the last several years; and in this many miles, it's very likely that there have been many instances of drivers asleep at the wheel; but there hasn't been a single fatality within this billion miles. On the other hand, according to NHTSA statistics, average drivers would experience >13 fatalities driving one billion miles. I know which I'd rather have alongside me on the highway; your preference may, of course, be different.

Received my free trial the other day, a day late for me to try it driving us home from Florida. I have to say I am very excited to try this out and am looking forward to the 100% perfected system. I have tried the FSD about 8 times now and at this point in time I wouldn't pay for it. The system was confused trying to get out of a parking spot, it also took us on a trip from one side of the road to the other, when it was supposed to turn left. For some reason it kept moving from the slow lane on the highway to the center lane when there was nothing in front of us. It didn't want to merge to the slow from the on ramp. I will keep trying the FSD out and look forward to the day I will put my money down on a perfected system. If it's the end of the year, that would be truly awesome.

My experience with FSD today was disappointing. Situation: three lanes road, my car in the middle behind another vehicle approaching intersection. In less than a mile there is a turn left. FSD decides to overtake the car in front of me by changing to the *right* lane *at* the intersection almost cutting off driver in that lane. There were no cars in the left lane! Then it almost immediately started to go to the leftmost lane with fast acceleration to make a left turn I mentioned earlier. I took control after that and probably will not try it again during this FSD trial period. At least not in the city.

Choosing the correct lane is not its strong suit. That doesn’t sound like such a horrible event though. If you’re concerned about its lane maneuvers then use the turn signals to keep it / put it in the lane you want it to be in.

I've had FSD for years and I can tell you it still needs a lot of work. I would recommend taking advantage of the trial though to get an understanding of what it can or cannot do currently.

Tesla offered me a month trial of FSD for my M3 RWD starting April 1. it drove over the inside curb of a nearby roundabout, got the speed limit wrong and wouldn't drive into my garage using the Summon forward command. Not ready for Prime Time, but it did four-way stops pretty well...

FSD has similarly disappointed in my M3 RWD. I wonder if the hardware is why it doesn't work as well as what's shown in KZbinr videos, or if they're just showing the best bits. (Whole Mars Catalog seems to show whole trips, though.)

I've been pessimistic about FSD while it's been written by human coders, there's just no way to cope with the billions of random things that could happen, but now they've switched to neural networks, the videos I've seen look really impressive, not perfect but it now seems to be on the right track

I have the FSD trial, tried it on my Model Y and its amazing. It’s gonna be a sad day when the 30days are up. I wish I had it. I think when normal people think about purchasing it $12k is a lot and will think for $12k I’ll just drive myself. Even the $200/month is a lot. Right now it’s just a luxury feature/item. It’s like hiring a chauffeur. I hope it comes down in price to get mass adoption.

It did good the first time we tried it but it did curb one of the wheels when we got to the parking lot. However, all the wheels were already messed up so it didn't bother me too much. I love driving my Tesla so I don't want FSD but my wife likes it so she is getting the monthly subscription. I might use it on a really long trip but if it ever does that phantom braking thing that will be the last time I use it.

Tried it out today on my Model Y with free trial of V12 (because my Model X that I paid $$$ to have FSD still only has V11) and had a few problems. It slowed for School Zone but didn’t reach the posted 30 KPH until half way through which would have landed me with a speeding ticket if the police were in the usual place where they like to have their radar. Also, at the end of the School Zone it stayed at 30 KPH for the next kilometer in a 50 KPH zone until it saw a speed sign where it rose to 60 KPH. Also it stopped at a red light and then advanced to turn right on red but it started to turn way too soon as a car was crossing in front of me and the next car behind it was far too close. It did squeak around the corner but I don’t think either of the two crossing cars appreciated it and I nearly had to change my underwear. Now perhaps the car is much smarter than I give it credit for but it turns much too close to objects on the road.

On the good side, I see FSD V12.3.3 responds to other cars' "body language", waits at stop signs less, hits the limit line more often on a downhill and shy’s away from trucks in the next lane. On the bad side, it still makes the same critical mistakes at specific places that V11.4.9 made those mistakes. Dirty Tesla showed that human gestures are not recognized (at least the gestures he tested). However, human pedestrian body language expressed as movement is recognized better than before. Another downside is FSD V12.3.3 is much more willful about refusing my lane change suggestions where I know the car can get in trouble being in the wrong lane. Also, it refuses to slow down when I'm using the scroll wheel because I know a deep dip in the road is coming. This means I’m going to have to drop out of FSD more often than I did with V11.4.9. Since V12.3.3 still makes persistent critical mistakes on commonly traveled roads, this is still a beta. It should not have been relabeled "Supervised" and given out as a 1-month trial although I appreciate the extra free month for myself. FSD may be ready to be a non-beta driving assistance capability in about a year, but they are a long long way away from fully autonomous driving with no steering wheel. FSD is still absolutely terrible with school zones, school buses, emergency vehicles, emergencies of any sort, diagonal parking, head-in parking (mandatory at a Costco where you need to put all your stuff in the trunk), summoning by pulling out of a parking spot, dealing with the aftermath of being in a traffic accident and traffic cops directing traffic. Tesla still needs side looking cameras near the headlights, probably a front camera in the grill and should try to extend the cameras' light sensitivity down into the infrared realm as far as it can go at a reasonable price. IR helps in smoke and fog.

Tesla turned it on in my 3 yr old M3SR. I last tried 3 years ago and the progress has been impressive to say the least. I had it take me on a 200 mile drive then back in one day. Does neat stuff like dodging potholes in parking lots but still has a little way to go. I’d say about 99% done but it’s that last 1% that takes 99% of the time. I will watch with interest but I’m really tempted. I am using it almost all the time. The demand to tweak the wheel is really irritating and happens much, much too frequently.

This is extremely impressive. It is the result of removing all the decision making code and training the AI using the examples of good drivers in real world situations. The challenge now is to find all the edge cases, where it makes mistakes or does not know what to do. Then, give it more examples of good driving in these situations.

That is why the latest version of FSD drives better than the previous version. AI cars won’t stop indicating, because they are trained with examples of well behaved drivers.

My friend has a Model 3 and got a 30 day demo trial. I drove it a couple of times. We live in a busy city and it’s not ready for prime time. It works fairly well but when you’re driving a two ton + car, not a thing you want to trust completely. The hands need to be fully on the steering wheel at all times and this video shows hands off the wheels frequently. That’s a no no. It has some very unsettling features. You need to manually turn off the automatic lane change. I did that as it was changing lanes too much. Especially noticeable was when I was coming up to a right turn and it moved over to the left lane as it was close to the right turn. I manually put it back in the right lane and it did successfully make the right turn. It does this weird pause when turning. Another similar thing occurred when driving through the park. It was going fine then suddenly decided to go into the left lane and I had to rather forcefully turn the wheel to go right. That was definitely scary. Once in the park, it got confused a lot. It tends to stop too far back from a stop sign and then proceeds to the stop line and stop again before proceeding. I was advised to use the go pedal to help it learn. Using the stop pedal will knock it out of auto drive mode. The self parking feature works mostly okay but tends to push the front end out too far into the road when backing in. We tried going around to test it in various spots. It tends not to recognize spots on steep hills. It parked itself in a red zone in front of a fire hydrant so obviously does not recognize either red zones or fire hydrants. We found a different spot but it parked itself in front of someone’s driveway. When it does park on a slight incline it doesn’t curb the wheels, that is, it doesn’t turn them either facing in or out so it won’t slide down a hill. Thats a ticketing offense in my city which is very hilly. It’s nice but not ready for prime time. I don’t trust it. Lastly they should have a message screen on the back saying it’s in self driving mode, sort of like cars that have the student driver decals. Right now the FSD is a student driver and other drivers need to be warned as it acts erratically and not to be trusted. Thank you.

I drove my Tesla model Y using FSD V12.3.3 for the first time ever l input my home address which is on a condominium of townhomes each with it's own address # so although l loved it at first when I took interstate highway l-95 south while I was on the access ramp it didn't yield long enough to traffic almost hitting a truck so l got a little scared then when l got to the street which gives access to my condominium it just sat there in the middle of a busy street instead of pulling into the access to road to my house, so l had to take over and put on the blinker on the sudden thus causing the car behind me to honk so l was none too pleased with my first time using FSD.

ADSs are approved state-by-state, and some states will be much easier than others. Nevada, for example, only requires proposed vendors to self-certify that their cars meet some pretty minimal requirements; this is why Mercedes Benz Drive Pilot got its first approval in Nevada. And it can't be much more difficult in California, because MB only drove 52,000 miles in California in 2022, the year before it got Level 3 approval for Drive Pilot.

My friend has had FSD since 11/22, paid $15k on his MY. He loves Tesla, owns stock, and he regrets getting it. The latest version is better, but didn’t steer correctly in a roundabout and made an 18” curb rash on his wheel. I’ve used the trial and it’s still not ready for prime time imo. Definitely not worth it to me and many others I’m seeing on Tesla FB groups. All hype to get stock up so investors can sell at higher prices.

It must be learning human gesture. Because the cops sometimes direct traffic. It can’t be released without being able to understand a traffic officer. People will figure out very fast that you can cross the street in front of a self drive car and hold your hand up and it will stop. They may have to pass laws about messing with them. People won’t feel the need to be fair to them when they see that there is no driver.

I didn't see it do anything a learner couldn't do on lesson 2. Every was everyday low speed driving, if you think that truck thing would scare you best turn in your licence. I would like it to be in a high speed situation where no possibility of no crash & you have to choose which crash you are mostly likely to survive. What would it do. Better off doing an advanced driving course & drive a car that does what you want & can't override your decision.

and what if you are 75, your confidence in your driving ability has just taken a big knock and you subsequently isolated alone within your home ? you need to go food shopping but you are anxious about getting behind the wheel again ? the reassurance of having FSD backing you up might be just what you need to keep you independence for another 6 months whilst you regain confidence and FSD improves further... Ultimately, it may enable you to continue living in your home for another decade whilst enjoying a much richer social life being out and about with your friends...

@@juliahello6673 I think it says a lot about Elon Musk and Tesla that they never cheated their way to Full Self Driving. They started out with the idea that a road vehicle could drive itself from vitually anywhere to virtually anywhere, by road or track. Not with maps, but by seeing [initially with the help of radar and ultrasonics] through cameras and simply working it out. After several/many years they realised they were never going to get there without AI. And since AI/Neural Networks have taken over the improvement has been dramatic. Almost like flicking on a switch.

It looks like it is human but it is computer based. Like chess there is a limited, but huge, number of possibilities so the problem of infinite possibilities doesn’t lead to the system locking up. I’d agree that it will developed to the point where it will have better safety records than humans. I think that driving has become so congested and boring that it looks to me that with driving enjoyment greatly reduced FSD will probably see widespread adoption despite the fact that it removes the single greatest appeal of driving - the experience agency, being in full control of a personal transportation system. I think the monthly charge for FSD shows that Tesla is as capable of rent seeking behaviour as any legacy car company. That is in my opinion a corrupt practice economically, technologically and morally.

The *only* difference between Level 4 and Level 5 is that Level 4 is allowed to be geofenced, for example to a single state; while Level 5 must be capable of driving anywhere within North America, or at least the United States. Since approval is on a state-by-state basis, and it's *extremely* unlikely that all states will approve Level 4 within 2 years, that's unlikely. To put it another way, Tesla can't be Level 5 until *every state* approves it; and it seems likely that some of the Red states may *never* approve Level 4.

Ok. Shameless Tesla fan here. FSD v12.3.3 is light years ahead of v11.4.9. I have done numerous challenging drives with only a few accelerator nudges and lane change prompts. Drove from Worcester Ma to Tesla Service in Providence RI door to door without disengaging. I don’t care if it ever gets to autonomy as is is so much safer and sees more than a human can with all of the cameras in play. So much safer than the average driver with a cell phone in hand
