Sam, this was an outstanding video with lots of research and well thought through conclusions. It's hard to pick major holes in it. The one challenge is that Tesla has huge demand for the 3 & Y and any 2023 announcement will not help. The dilemma is that if they announce this in 2023, they will lose more 3&Y sales in the short term than they sell of the Model 2 as people wait. This leads me down the rabbit hole of scaling production capacity as scale is supposed to be the core theme of Elon's masterplan Part Trois, so the pieces in this puzzle start to fit. If you then extrapolate further, it asks the questions about the ultimate and most coveted model number - the model 1. This maybe Tesla's crowning achievement and not require humans at all. Very thought provoking! Thank you.
@markmyers4573

I don't think people wanting a 2 are buying a Y in the mean time. And only a few might be choosing a 3. The people waiting for a 2 are the ones who can't or won't spend the amount of money a 3 or a Y costs.

Solar and wind growth is more than making up the difference already. The impact is less than when air conditioners hit the market in the past. Hey Sam. European cities really have very narrow roads, but thats not the same in the USA, where very broad roads and avenues are common. No big market for large american cars. But the small hatchbacks like golf and corrolla, sells like warm danish viking pastry. If Elon wants to have factories close to the market, its a good question wether GIGA Austin will be first choice, instead of Berlin, when it comes to Model 2. Few days ago, entrepteneurs started prepairing another 70 hectars of land, where the Berlin Giga factory 2, are expected to be built in the comming months. That could very well be part of the M2 production plans, that Elon has in his sleeve. We will see.

My prediction is that this smaller car will be made in Shanghai and Berlin, not USA. Americans like big over-sized pickup trucks. Even the Cybertruck is quite large, and I believe a somewhat smaller version of the Cybertruck will be designed for the rest of the world markets. The biggest negative for Cybertruck in USA is not its looks, but that it won't be high enough. They like to sit high and be able to look over the roofs of cars in front. Tesla Model 2 will be imported into USA in small numbers.

Wow, a real revelation, I hope it all comes to be. Very much looking forward to 2023, seems like with Tesla every year there is something significant to look forward to. Despite Tesla’s big push into expanding their SC station network globally I still think it must grow even faster than it is now. I follow the growth esp. in the US and growth rate needs to increase, lots of permits for new stations but many languish for months before construction or expire. Some ‘coming’ locations also suddenly disappear from their SC map, one of them twice in the past year or so in a nearby city but a 24 stall one under construction two blocks from my home. With Elon saying SC stations will open up to non-Tesla EVs rate of growth must grow faster imho. Of the half-dozen stations within 9 miles of my home the utilization bar charts on the Tesla screen shows near saturation nearly 18 hours a day. I see a huge increase in the no. of Teslas in my area this year and in the past month, I predict much more as gas is expensive in SCal. Solar panels, EVs and net metering/TOU rates, lots of sunshine makes economic sense if you have your own home.

I think you are right in a lot of this. I do have a fear. A lot of the inflation we currently experiencing is due to fossil fuels jacking up price for profits, because they, an oligopoly, can. We are a captive market. Mostly. But my issue is Tesla. I am worried Tesla is going to corner a huge section of the market place. I don’t mind them leading the way and showing that it can be done, and done very profitably. But we need competition in the EV market to force the prices even lower then what you are talking about for the Model 2. So everyone that needs a vehicle can afford one. Besides it would be a very boring world if all vehicles looked like a Tesla. They need strong competition, to keep them sharp! To keep prices low. To keep cars fun!

Actually, I would go stronger on this. Tesla (to me) are a software and charger company primarily. They have also focused on how to build EVs from day one and are at an unbelievably advanced level on how to make cars in a skateboard world. I think a model Z, small SUV will be the most important model going forward, but the same skateboard will be used for the model 2, a new small roadster (mx-5 size) and a smaller EU sized pick up truck. The current one is just too big for the EU needs. The new small platform and casting method is key. To survive, the other OEMs have to follow.

Sam- In the US, in the 1960s, the Volkswagon Beatle and the VW Bus, were the universal low cost vehicles. Their air cooled engines could be repaired by any mechanic with basic skills. (I observed a student at Cal Poly, completely disassemble a VW engine, rebuild it, put it back into the car and drive it away first try.) My direct experience was with a Beatle, which I drove all over northern Europe in 1965. My father bought it in Germany. Under powered, at 36 horsepower. (I got a ticket once, for entering a freeway, a mile ahead of a pickup truck, which must have been going at least seventy mph. The pickup swerved around my VW. Observed by an officer, who gave me a ticket, for a hazardous turn to the left. The TESLA Model 2 needs to be the same low-cost car, for students, young people and the world, to eliminate the over one billion ICE cars polluting the planet. The 500 Chinese companies, producing minicars, have the prices way down, below $5,000 USD, but those cars won't sell well in the US, or meet the crash standards. General motors can only afford to sell Hummers and Cadillacs. Ford can only survive selling expensive pickup trucks. TESLA needs to provide a super VW bug equivalent for the 2020s, that will move the world to electric. COP 27 is saying that 1.5 degrees warming is already gone, and the world is heading for 2.7 degrees global warming, with the hundred year weather extreme happening every week. The only car I can see in my future, I currently own both a TESLA Model 3 with FSD and a Hyundai NEXO fuel cell, is the apocalypse-ready mini cybertruck. Bulletproof, Hazmat protected and floats.

Great video, thanks! I too think that things will move faster and faster. This would also be in line what people like Tony Seba (see this KZbin channel) keep saying: it'll follow an S-curve. Both for the adoption of the new, but also the decline of the old will follow a similar curve. Certain legacy companies have very little time to get their game together if they want to continue to exist. Toyota still remains somewhat of a mystery to me: it's lagging horribly, yet at least one day they had a huge amount of the required skills and knowledge in house. Just the thought that the company that brought us the Prius (hate it or love it, doesn't matter) is lagging so much when it comes to serious EV products is just hard to believe..

The Model 3 is already the most fuel efficient EV. Increasing production volume would reduce cost. This Model 2 could be front wheel drive because to get efficiency a car needs regenerative braking. It might be made with one casting. China likes exports and this car could be a winner assuming Politics don't get in the way. To out sell the Model 3 it needs to cost less. Efficiency is not much of a factor as the Model 3 is already great. If this car is a hit with young people they will drive way more miles per year than they would in a gas car. Safety is important as smaller cars are not as safe as larger cars. This car could have a huge fun factor.

I’d love someone to explain why they think the Tesla Model 2 release will kill gas cars !!!!!! I believe electric cars are the future , I currently drive an Ev & have done so for 5 years. But I’m very sorry to say at this moment in time I’m seriously considering going back to a petrol car. Here in the uk it is actually not worth going electric unless it’s a company car or you have solar at home. The price of charging an Ev has skyrocketed in the last 12 months. Dealers & other Ev owners need to start being honest around the cost of owning & driving an Ev. I myself have saved thousands of pounds over the last 5 years through driving an Ev. But now in 2022 with standard home electric being £0.34 per kw & most public AC chargers costing anything from £0.35p to £0.65p per kw & DC Rapid chargers costing anything from £0.69p to £1.00 per kw the cost of running an Ev has gone above that of a petrol car. If you do the proper calculations around cost of charging your Ev you will soon realise you are not really saving money. There was recently a test done by I think whatcar. A Vauxhall corsa E against a Vauxhall corsa petrol both driven in convoy on a 220 mile trip from Leeds. They filled the petrol corsa up at the motorway services which is the most expensive place to fill a petrol car up at , at the cost of £1.99 per litre & they filled the corsa E up at one of the cheapest rapid chargers in the uk at the cost of £0.69p per kw. The corsa E cost £9.60 more in electric than the petrol car did in petrol. That’s crazy , Especially when you could fill the petrol car up at nearly any other garage for £0.40p at least cheaper but you couldn’t really find a cheaper rapid charger so in the real world you would save more than that. They also tested the bmw i4 M50 against a Bmw M440i & again the petrol bmw was £5.50 cheaper than the Ev version. I know Ev owners will be saying but I only pay £0.10p on the octopus go cheap night tariff to charge my Ev. But that’s not entirely true is it Ev owners. Because you may get 6 hours of cheap charging from 23:30 to 05:30 but you pay £0.10p more for your day time Electric eg the next 18 hours of the day at the cost of £0.44p per kw instead of the government cap of £0.34p per kw. So for a proper calculation cost of charging your Ev you need to add the extra you pay during the other 18 hours onto your Ev costs. You must also remember for every pound you pay for electric charging you only actually get £0.85p of electric in your car as you lose around 15% in the transfer. Now let’s more on to the myth of you’ll save on maintenance with an Ev. This is partly true & false older electric cars need little servicing compared to petrol cars. But if you buy new for the first 5 years of ownership there is hardly any saving from maintenance. The reason behind this if you don’t have your Ev serviced every year you will lose your warranty. And the cost is roughly the same as a petrol car. Like Ev’s the first year to the 4th year the only difference in servicing is oil & filter. If you look at the MG service package there is £2.00 difference in monthly cost between an Ev package over the petrol cars package. Petrol cars do start to be more expensive after the fourth service if you use the main dealer. But most people don’t take older petrol cars to the main dealer after there warranty has run out. This is where it gets a bit more awkward for Ev owners as you get a 8 year warranty on the battery & motor you still need to have it serviced by the main dealer to keep that warranty for the 8 years. Because of this it is more Likely to cost you more in maintenance for your Ev as most people don’t take 7 / 8 year old cars to main dealers for a service. Then there is car insurance Ev are more expensive to insure than there petrol counterparts. Over the years the uk government has stopped all grants to private buyers. The £5000.00 grant got dwelled down to £1500.00 & has now gone. The charger grant has also gone. Free chargers have now more or less vanished. With April 2023 fast approaching & the government removing the cap home electric is estimate to rise from the £0.34p per kw to £0.51p per kw & public chargers will go up as well so Rapid chargers will be at least £1.00 per kw. So like I said unless you have a company car or you have solar at home your Ev if not at this moment cost you more to run than a petrol car come April 2023. Then there is the cost of buying an Ev. Let’s say you buy one of the cheapest Ev’s on the uk market a Vauxhall Corsa E ultimate this will cost you £10,000 more than the petrol Vauxhall Corsa ultimate to buy , but in real terms it will cost you £13,000 more. If you look at Vauxhall’s finance because the Ev is £10,000 more to buy you will pay around £3,000 more in interest. So you Ev now has cost you actually £13,000 more than a petrol one but remember you need a home charger too the average cost since the grants removal is around £1200.00 so your already in the hole for an extra £14200.00 because you bought an electric car. Lets say you electric is free for life & you do 10,000 miles a year it would take you around 8 years to get that money back if you didn’t pay a penny for you electric. But in todays market it will most likely cost you more to run the ev & come April it will 100% cost you more to run an Ev. The time has passed where you can put your fuel saving costs towards the extra cost of the car & with no grant anymore you will have to shoulder that burden yourself. So please all new people looking at an Ev do the calculations yourself if your getting an Ev to save money , because you will not save anything. I must make a comment about Tesla I have owned two Tesla’s & they were nice cars. I was a Tesla fan boy but not anymore for the below reasons. 1. Too many broken promises. I have paid for FSD twice & it has never been operational even tho Elon said it would be very soon. Tesla should transfer it to your new car if you’ve paid for it & it hasn’t been activated yet. The supercharging network we were told back in the day you buy a Tesla & some of that money goes to build the supercharging network. I get Tesla opening up the network to get uk funding towards it , but when you have spent £80,000 plus for your Tesla it’s not right anyone can have access to it , at the same rate as you for just £10.00 per month & can just pay for one month & cancel it. It’s a betrayal of the people that have spent tens of thousands buying tesla for access to the superchargers. New car prices Tesla / Elon always said the more cars we sell will bring down the prices of tesla cars. Tesla make more per car than any other main stream manufacturer. Tesla also put up prices in country’s that have great sales & brings down prices in country’s with bad sales numbers. This goes against what Tesla has said in the past. Even tho tesla make more per car than any other manufacturer they put up the price of the model 3 standard in the uk from £38,500 to £48,500 that’s a rise of £10,000. Tesla / Elon said the model 3 would be affordable £48,500 for a starting price & base model isn’t affordable & it shouldn’t be in the 50k car bracket it’s not worth that. It should be a max of £35,000. The roadster has been promised for years now & the cyber truck but they are know where to be seen.

Good video. I think most of it is probably on target. Except I think there will be, or at least should be, only 1 variation. I don't think there will be an "SUV" variation - there is no such thing as an "SUV" that small anyway. And there should only be entry-level variation only - standard range, single motor. Keep it simple and affordable! Other variations are completely unnecessary and only allow Tesla to distract and upsell what is not needed. They will only make the more expensive variants and never the entry-level variant, and the $25K Model 2 will be just as much of a myth as the $35K Model 3 was. Enough. Keep it simple - 1 variation only, keep it truly affordable, and truly roll it out to the masses! By the time you have to buy the paint color you want, the wheels you want, etc., the price is already higher than the entry level price anyway. Just keep it at that. 1 variation, a few options, the end.

My problem is the model 3 feels like a $29,000 car, not a $45,000. I own one. The interior is very cheap. And I own a LR version and can't imagine a car with less range either. No clue how a cheaper tesla will feel.

I hope the "model 2" will be a 2 door hatchback. Tesla already has four other cars (+ cyber truck) that are 4 doors. 2 door design will keep the car lighter and simpler to manufacture.

I think it's not in test production yet since for another big cost savings it will have a stainless steel body, sort of a cyber-mini. But it could follow very close on the heels of Cybertruck production. There will be steering wheel versions, but as soon as FSD is ready (very soon IMO) there will be versions without. That's the fleet of robotaxis. The huge advantage of these vehicles over those of other manufacturers will be FSD. Governments will want to see FSD spread as quickly as possible because of the safety advantage. Plus let's not forget the insurance savings. Finally, I think this vehicle will be used to open a GF in India, and probably several other locations.

If my memory is correct, didn’t Tesla buy land about 3 miles from current Shanghai? Could this be a possible assembly location for a Model 2? Could you do a part two researching info on this site? Thanks and congrats on over 100000 subscribers. Good work.😊
