I was not disturbed with the "Infected Kiss". I don't know about the video game, but for me, this act further solidified the behavior of the fungus that Ellie observed and Joel confirmed: the Cordyceps tends to get attracted to itself. I guess that "kiss" is supposedly a sign that the fungus in the infected sensed itself inside Tess, so instead of biting her, it tried to bind itself via her mouth, where the fungus usually emerges from a newly infected. It's like the Cordyceps wanted to bring Tess over to the group, make her one of the army troops. Overall, it's a solid 9/10 for me.

If you look carefully, as soon as the infected kisses Tess, the tendrils literally dive into her mouth and probably down her throat if her gagging is anything to go by. When I first saw this happen, the way I was thinking was that the infected (who looks like a stalker) sensed that Tess was already infected and was compelled by the cordyceps to ‘connect’ with her, speeding up the infection process. Stalkers are known for being more…efficient with their kills in the game, they’re always hiding and don’t really attack outright. Also could be the show’s way of having ‘spores’, since those aren’t in the series.

This scene just _works_ . It's so disturbing, but after you realize that the infected are in fact a hive mind, you see that they had already intercepted Tess's mind. The last thing she really wanted, what she was focusing on in her last moments somewhat human, was for Joel to kiss her. When that didn't happen, the hive mind is just playing out the last thing she would have wanted and mirroring how she wanted to act. Hence, the ''kiss''.

This scene is stupid at worst and pretentious garbage at best. Hate to be that guy but, while i like the show, the game’s concept of the infected were just so much better in every aspect, foregoing the (ironically) gamey concept of the fungus being zombies with a hivemind and opting for the more believable and horrifying concept of people who’ve had their bodies hijacked. The infected in the game would cry, weep and almost inaudibly speak on occasion and very rarely if they were wounded would actually briefly beg and plead for their lives before the infection took over again. It made sam’s fear and eventual fate all the more worse because his fear was realized. The infected *are* stuck in their bodies, they’re aware of what’s going on, and feel everything and even worse than that, they’re completely and utterly alone as the infection would usually blind them and isolate them so they would die, and spread it’s infective spores by bursting open their skulls with it’s fungus. There was this horrifying scene in the game where you would sneak past a newly infected who was crying and begging for herself to stop eating a fellow survivor, her speech is distorted and labored but the subtlety of it is what makes the realization more horrific. And it sucks because watchers of the show won’t get that dreadful, terrifying experience due to the massive change to the nature of the infection.

Maybe I’m wrong but… If the filmmakers decided to write an emotionally vulnerable moment for Joel here - like a desire to save Tess or try to stay and die with her - that would be inconsistent with his character so far and it could make the eventual connection with Ellie less dramatic and effective. Given she knows the lighter isn't working or may not work at all and that she's starting to lose control over her body, why on earth resort to that if you have nades. The result is some drama but at the cost of reasoning, it's called poor writing, something essential to TLOU 2. The podcast or director's confirmation means nothing since the Druckman is the sole person who butchered TLOU 2 plot and TLOU legacy not just by poor writing but also by senselessly injecting it with his fetishes. It might disguisting, but its something differnt, some new and that's good in my opinion. I got tired of the same old stuff I've seen over and over again. I am not a TV series person if it's not reality tv. I never found the Walking Dead interesting or captivating enough to stay gripped. I thought it was too generic. Now, this series is original, captivating, creepy, and creative. Instead of the boring, played out zombies...we get fungus people. Not only that, we get different stages of the fungus infection when it attacks its host. From the first couple weeks., months, and years. Freaking incredible. I love this. Amazing.

I agree. TWD didn’t capture my attention at all. I played TLOU game when it first launched and it felt so different from everything else at the time, in terms of story. What a strange scene. I’ve never watched the show, but I’ve played the game dozens of times. The infected never behaved like this in the game, and Tess was killed by Fedra agents at the capitol building, not infected. I liked the way the game did Tess’s death better.

I hated how the Resident Evil movies influenced the action aspect of the games. However, I can see the games borrowing elements from the show as the fungus evolves or something. Imagine having to avoid the fungus lines or otherwise you will receive a horde of infected.

I mean, the lighter adds tension to the already dramatic scene. It would've been badass if she held one of those grenades and let it go after the kiss. It would mirror her game death a little more as she held off those soldiers so Ellie and Joel could escape. Still a riveting scene
@sheeparderoohhh4107 Жыл бұрын
To be honest, I dont think she would have been able to hold the grenade or the pin since she was losing her motor control and her hands were shaking so if that were the case, she could have dropped the grenade and blew the infected up early taking out Joel and ellie. At least with the lighter, she was moving her hands at a shaking pace
@ReelAesthetic Жыл бұрын
I agree. I'm sure Mazin and Druckmann had the conversation about which device to use in the end. For some reason, they chose the lighter. Perhaps it's because, in terms of plot, it doesn't really matter if it's the lighter or a grenade. The lighter may have been chosen because it's an easter egg.
@kuraito1346 Жыл бұрын
In the game version she sacrificed herself and got killed by FEDRA. But on the TV series she sacrificed herself and blows herself up with explosives to kill the infected so Joel and Ellie can get away.

the comments seemed pretty impressed with the filmmaking, so i suggest listening to the companion podcast (it's free on youtube) where they get in depth into their techniques. for example, for the tendril kiss they decided to film the scene as if it was a romance rather than a horror which is perhaps why most of you might've found it creepy yet entrancing. real good shit

What’s weird is the fact that this is one is a stalker I think? It’s said stalkers may have a bit of humans left in them so basically this man probably never felt a kiss in a long time while spreading the infection. Or it’s the ip drain infection spreading it one way.

It makes sense that the fungus chose the least invasive infection for Tess given she was already infected and not acting hostile towards the runners, that way it gets a fresh specimen with no external injuries through bites or mauling, so a stronger host overall.
@AnnaInWonderTube Жыл бұрын
what bothers me the most here: we have already seen "kiss killing" in an endless list of movies: the Harry Potter death eaters, Batman's Poison Ivy fatal kiss, Imhoteb 's mouth in The Mummy, the alien parasite from The Faculty and many, many more soul, energy and fluid sucking creatures in many other pictures. It could have been interesting to see something new. May be, the fungal organ should grow under the nails or on the hands or skin, or may be its just not necessary for the plot whatsoever, or perhaps Tess'es infection should have been portrayed otherwise. The kiss hasn't a metaphorical meaning, it's science fiction. It could have been appropriate in a surreal psychological drama, for instance. Here it just brings unnecessary baggage.

Another way this could have played out to be even more epic: Tess tries the lighter desperately without success, gets kissed by mushroom tentacle guy, drops her lighter without starting the fire. The all of the sudden a grenade drops from her other hand, with the pin already pulled. The zombies make a stupid face and then the whole hive is shown being blown to pieces in all its glory. Then we see spores being carried further by the wind while Joel and Ellie run away.
@mspionage1743 Жыл бұрын
Everything has been wonderful thus far except the "kiss". That was simply unnecessary and a dumb decision in my opinion. All else though, excellent. Edit Addition: Something I just noticed. Look at 0:14 when the fungus is (basically) waking up ground troops. It is able to, literally, burrow under a nail and directly into the skin. Anyone/everyone knows how difficult and how much force it takes to do this as everyone has had a cut before. Point being, the tendrils we see must have some type of cutting mechanism on the end.

Frag grenades do not cause a fireball upon detonation, when the combustible material inside ignites, the gases expand producing enormous pressure outwards, but the fuse does not produce fire. So I doubt it would ignite the fuel, although with luck, the shrapnel would generate a spark when colliding with a gasoline-soaked surface, but it's depending on a lot of luck.
