COAST is Portland-based, but most of their knives are made in China. That said, I have an LX350 frame lock, and it is a great knife, highly useable, and decent steel. So being made in China doesn't mean shoddy or generally inferior materials--not at the budget but good quality level. The DX355 is also a bargin and a real knife. -Cheers!

+israelpiper Thanks for your comment. I guess it's quality vs costs. But the quality of Coast knives is surprisingly good for made in China blades and not everyone can afford made in USA steel.

That's it in a nutshell, what you've just said in reply. Also, in the area of traditional non-tactical style, Victorinox prevails, and Americans purchase those Swiss pocket knives in vast numbers every year. People respect quality, but also live within budgets. How the Swiss--who average much higher incomes than Americans--can keep their knives inexpensive is beyond me. Coast has been coming up in the worl, and is slowly being reviewed seriously. Bottom line: cheap or expensive, is any given knife a functioning, durable tool? Most men are hard-wired to love knives, and nothing makes a knife more cool than holding it in the hand and remembering that my father gave it to me 50 years ago, and I am still using it!

+israelpiper What an interesting thought . I've never thought about why knives from Victorinox are cheap compared to the high cost of living in Switzerland . Perhaps it is because they produce for a global market and in large quantities. I just had a conversation about flashlight with the subject cheap vs quality, US made vs China. I guess it's an endless topic ;) Let me guess, was is a Buck Knive that you got from your father?
