The Nissan Z has returned, and journalists are finally allowed to drive it! The car is no longer associated with a number - it’s simply the Z. Is Nissan’s strategy of improving their existing platforms working out for them, or would a fresh approach have been better for this iconic sports car? The guys trade off driving and assessing whatever is impending...

@@verde629 most Z buyers cant afford a 60k-70k nismo. Considering how cheap the base model is at 40k. Don't think a nismo edition is worth almost twice as much. One of the selling points of Nissan's marketing plan was that it's affordable. In the 90s, the Japanese sportscar died in America because of price and emissions. Plus that nasty 25 percent tariff

@@beexiong2995 considering the fully loaded price is 53k, 57-65 would only be reasonable if they make the nismo a straight up monster (50-75 more horsepower, better suspension and handling which they definitely held back on) This will definitely not be the last Z. Here's the thing..... Nissan has been in a bit of a bog of issues and they're not as prosperous as many of the other Japanese auto makers right now. To expect revolutionary might be a bit unfair. Given the fact they've even brought this car given the circumstances they're in right now I think is laudable. If they need to borrow from older parts bin to make this happen I think is not only completely forgivable but I think was the right choice given the scenario. Good job on this Nissan.

as a nissan outsider, i disagree. i feel like just about everything they do except the gtr is a a half-attempt. but i've never really been a fan of nissans.. cheap interiors, not much to be desired.. my mom has always had armada's, titans, which ive driven a fair bit of growing up. families with sentras, altimas. theyve all been so grey and boring. one of my cousins had a 350z and it was hot inside, still cheap plastics and feel everywhere, and personally dont like that bubbly look. and my most recent nissan experience is beating a 370 nismo. Executive commuter as the buyer? Bingo. I think you got it. Think it is a different buyer than the Supra since that seems to be more of a sports car than a GT-like car. (Also a buyer who may be 'up in age' that used to own the original Z's in their youth.) I think you're right on the money, but at the same time I'm 27 and would pick the Z over the Supra. I'm at a point where I don't really care that the Supra is a bit quicker. The Z still has tons of power and fun factor and I'd rather take a car with a subdued throwback design over the mess of edgy "look at me" sharp lines and fake vents of the Supra.

Great review. I am so glad this car is here and in a manual. The real comparison for me is this Z in a manual or the Supra in a manual or even the Mustang Ecoboost High Performance with the Handling Package in a manual. I am past the whole "have to be the fastest 0 to 60" and want a good RWD car that has some power, performs well, and has a great 6-speed manual. Yes, electric cars are coming but what we have right now is pretty amazing and I am going to try hard not to miss out. I also agree they left some things on the table for the NIZMO version but as far as bang for your buck, this new Z is pretty solid. Thanks again.

I'm not saying this isn't a good car overall, but it's just behind in times...53k... so it goes out the window the argument the z fanboys had against the Supra... even though they mostly parts binned this car from their parts catalog. sure it has a stick shift, but from other reviews, it's not a great manual... and even the auto for auto perf is significantly different (refer to ICONS lap times), although that may be due to Nissan's autos, no matter in what cars are pretty damn terrible, especially compared to the ZFs, maybe manual for manual will be more even... honestly I'd rather fork out a few more grand to get the Supra over the Z unless I'm already a fanboy. Like these guys say, I'm glad this is another option that is available still in this day and age... I recently sold my Mk5 Supra for something else, but that car had a great duality to it that the few $k over the Z "performance" package was more than worth it. in normal soft setting it was an amazing cruiser, and in sport mode, it was stiff enough yet the edges were rounded. and had even more gobs of low end torque. Plus the Supra, whether you love or hate the design, can't be denied the fact that it looks as exotic and more attention grabbing than most anything south of 150k. Nismo likely will be ~60k... and THEN it will be similar to the Supra in terms of perf...

There is no way someone looking to turn a used one of these in 7-10 years into a track car is going to leave it stock. Reliability, again...I said used. Interesting that the new Z is very much linked to the 370z, and lets face it that was in reality using the very cool 350Z. I notice the the internal door pulls, the handbrake, electric seat controls to name but a few look to be a direct carry over from the 350Z! From back in 2003 . 240Z will always be the Hero, Z32 simply the best looking, the Z33 a modern affordable revelation at the time. Hard to say how the new Z will be remembered one day - like a music mix compilation a bit of all the Z’s , not really a revelation in its self. Having said that I am pleased Nissan did it. Was great meeting you guys in Philly at Radwood. Great vid. Summed up why I took the Z off the list. I don't see the value in this car. Why tune a "sport" suspension you pay for in a performance trim to be like this? The sport muffler isn't up to snuff. I do not see the value in a $10k trim package here. Where's the variable suspension at least? Look at what you get in the 1LE package on a SS Camaro, then look at this. You get adjustable suspension, Recaros seats, 6 piston fr/4 piston rear brakes, eLSD, real sport exhaust, HUD, short throw shifter, aero, more modes, better tires. For $7000. And... A decked out Camaro 2SS 1LE is slightly cheaper than Z even with it's price bump, and it will decimate the Z on the track and on the streets. Even Supra and Mustang has better value and performance. Beautiful car, but it's overall performance and value is not good. Nissan dropped the ball.

While i prefer rear mid engine sports cars like the corvette this new nissan z is extremely well done. I prefer the 40 grand model as its very impressive with the twin turbo v6 producing 400 hp. The styling is exciting and the front reminds me of the original z car when modded to remove the chrome front bumper. The wheels fill the fenders nicely and the rear is clean. Not sure I like the chrome strip running so far back. I think the stylists call it a katana sword or something. Pretty sports car. Thank you for the insights.

My MKIV Supra gained 75 whp with just a high flow intake, front mount inercooler and full 3.5 inch exhaust with NO cats. I have not even done a tune yet. And that was with just 1 exhaust system, this Z has 4 cats (2 per turbo) .... So yea imagine both turbo's with NO cats and dual 3 inch exhaust systems ... Both filters are high flowing ... This Z starts its torque at 1650 rpm, with that free flowing exhaust on both turbos and higher intake flow, that torque will kick in even faster. I know on my MKIV that 1st turbo didn't really kick in until 3k rpm when it was stock but after the mods, i could feel it spool as quick as 2k rpm and spooled MUCH faster. They think its fast now and its stock, yea after some mods and a light tune, prob 550 hp ..

The whole issue with reused parts from the 370Z...who's that really going to bother? A 370Z owner, for sure. But for some reason I feel like a lot of 370Z owners are attached to their modded cars and probably aren't looking to move on. And for new prospective owners, it's not like the old car was bad. Just old and needed a refresh which this one does nicely and makes it worthwhile buying the new Z instead of a used 370.

Honestly a lot of the hate this car is getting is about things that anyone who actually works on or mods their car likes. Boo hoo the switchgear is the same, but guess what, when it breaks its going to be cheap to replace. Or all the fuss over not having adaptive suspension, yet a plain old strut is literally a fraction of the price of an adaptive damper and you won't have warning lights on your dash after swapping in coilovers. The chassis being a 370 also means there's probably already a decent aftermarket for it before it even releases.

This is not a bad looking car, but Nissan made a huge mistake focusing on the 240 from a design standpoint when they should have focused on the 300Z from 1990 to 1996, that was the best design by far! The 350/370 was a step back from the 1990's 300Z and this updated version just doubles down on that mistake. The 300Z was more spacious inside, had T-Tops I just don't understand what Nissan is trying to do here? It's cramped, there's no T-Tops or Targa Top. I don't get it.
