Range Rover is known for their imposing, luxurious off-roaders. The Sport trim is the more affordable way into the model, and we test drive it to discuss the brand, this model, and more. Join us for a test drive.

Great review and I agree with you guys for the most part! As you somewhat stated, the people buying Range Rovers are buying them for the aesthetics and for the prestige. I believe that is the biggest part of a SUV decision at this price point. As an enthusiast, I’m aware the X5, GLE, and even Cayenne are better drivers, but they’re somewhat soccer momish (unless we’re talking X5M/AMG/Turbo/GTS). I might choose the RR as a daily driver and drive my 911 on the weekends.

Have the previous gen version of one of these but have owned BMW SUVs and sedans in the past plus have test driven all the Porsche and Audi SUVs as well. I can't really speak to everything about the current model, but I do think many of the same reasons one might choose this over the competition still apply: 1. Steering and brake feel: Surprisingly, I find the steering weight, on-center feel, and overall steering feel to be the best tuned out of all these vehicles. Even the Macan's steering feels more artificial. The BMW X5 is the worst for this with overly light and vague on-center steering...so much so that it was a deal breaker for me. Same thing with the brakes- even the base version comes with multi-piston calipers front and rear and has very solid and progressive brake feel. I can't say the same for all the competition surprisingly. 2. Build quality: Yep believe it or not. I love the solid feel of the door handles, the stalks, the door thunk and just the carved out of granite feel of this thing going down the road. 0 squeaks or rattles in my 40k of ownership. All my previous BMWs had rattles that drove me nuts. 3. Interior storage: So much better than any of the Germans. Audi is the worst with their tiny center console in a huge SUV like the q7. Meanwhile my RRS has room for a fridge, plus 2 gloveboxes, plus storage under the cupholders. Not sure why the Germans can't manage decent storage in some of their even larger vehicles. 4. Seats: I have the base seats. But they come standard with very high quality leather similar to BMW's 'Merino' leather. I love getting into the car and getting that whiff of high quality leather..just makes it feel special. No trendy patterns either. But they are super comfortable; not too firm and not too soft. The seat cooling works well unlike in the German cars. On a related note, the overall driving position is perfect. I noticed that all of the German cars have some oddness in terms of things like: dead pedal at an uncomfortable angle, steering wheel blocking part of the cluster, slight offset of seat relative to pedals. All things that lead to back pain on a longer trip. Not so on the RRS- it's perfect. 5. Ride/Handling balance: Yes, there are SUVs that can out-handle it. But, in my experience, I'm not going to really push this type of vehicle on a twisty road. That being said, I actually do enjoy driving this on such roads; the body lean feels natural and lets you feel the weight transfer plus the good steering feel builds confidence. I test drove an X5 on similar roads recently and while it might have cornered slightly flatter i had no confidence due to the steering. Plus, its perfectly balanced unlike the front-heavy platform found in the Porsche and Audi SUVs. To me, it kind feels like an overgrown BMW e39 if that makes sense. I will say that the ride can be a bit busy on bumpy roads...but I like the way you can nail a pothole or speedbump and the car just takes it. Try that in a BMW, Audi or Porsche and you'll hear and feel some unpleasant sounds. 6. Looks: Subjective, but I really do think that both the previous and current gen look so much better than all the competition. The X5 is dowdy looking, the Porsches are blobby and the Audis are bland. Even in the base trim level it still just looks so good..and I love the way the air suspensino lowers automatically when you park the car. When you're paying this much its nice to like the way the car looks..and they nailed it with the RRS. 7. Stereo: Even the base Meridian sounds better to my ears than the upgraded sound systems in the competitors. You have to spend big money (4k+) with the Germans to get a decent stereo imo. Bose in the Porsches is very underwhelming as is HK in the BMWs. 8. Engine (inline 6) and throttle response: For some reason, the Germans all seem to tune in some amount of throttle lag from a start. Not so w/ the mild hybrid 6 in the RRS: very responsive and torquey. Plus we reguarly get 28mpg+ on the highway which is great for big SUV. A 4 cylinder Macan I rented once did worse! As far as your confusion over the "sport" name and why people choose this over the big Range Rover I'm a bit confused. This model line has been around for about 20 years now so its nothing new. Personally, I have no interest in the big Range Rover--i prefer the slightly smaller size and looks of the sport. It was funny bit, but I think you guys spent a bit too much time obsessing over the name. As far as cost, these come standard with quite a bit more than the germans. By the time you spec an x5/Q7/Q8 to the same level it costs about the same. The Cayenne costs even more.

Why aren't these posted on the main everyday driver channel, feel like they don't get nearly as much traction as they deserve on here. Some of my favorite car reviews!

We originally had all our videos on the same channel. However, these Test Drives, as a different format and often non enthusiast cars, dragged down the views of the original channel and undermined it in the eyes of the KZbin algorithm. When we split the content, both channels began trending upward again. We’d love to have more views both places, but we’ve never been a KZbin darling. Thank You for watching!

To me, the RR Sport has always been "Sportier" than the regular RR. Always has handled better than the big boy.

I believe they call it sport because it would be sporter than the full body Range Rover, more nimble. Range Rover is luxury and comfort first. So to have a smaller model and call it sport yes it’s fine. It may lean alittle more in the corners but a lot less then the big Range. If you wouldn’t call it Sport than what would you call it?

If you want fast and dynamic, there’s an SV…. Off road, there’s a Defender. The Sport isn’t trying to compete against the Cayenne or X5 for dynamics, it’s a luxury cruiser. Cayenne is ugly as sin too.

The Range Rover Sport is the better looking Range Rover. To me at least. The badge on the back of a vehicle doesn’t mean anything anymore. I don’t even think twice.

I feel like RR sport (aside from being the cheapER one), is like its made for the Starbucks buyers and is less rugged/go anywhere than the normal one. At least in prior gens I've noticed. Like a while back the rr sport came with road tires, had like half the off road drive modes, no crawl gear, etc.

I prefer the Sport over the full size … kids are grown and gone - don’t need 3 rows of seats. Price was irrelevant.

Hi, from Japan!! People who know what really good cars wouldn’t pay $100K for this body roll making car. By the way, I have been seeing many Sporty SUVs recently. Means “Sporty Sports Utility Vehicle”. Sporty sports?? Hummm. Weird.

This video comes across as sour grapes. The shouting, the fake surprise while talking over each other, and the weird statements telling people how will be using their cars. This is painful to watch. No one will use the armrests? What about petite women who need something closer in? No one will take it off roading? I see RR, RRS, G Wagons, and the older "real" Land Cruisers off roading or going through steep mountain roads daily. Nothing wrong with enjoying your X3, Cayenne, or Bronco, but why take shots at those who want to enjoy the best of all worlds with vehicle that is capable and comfortable?
