We sit down to discuss some of the latest new technologies available to desktop PC building, including Intel's eight core Haswell-E CPU, X99 motherboards, DDR4 memory, and PCIe storage. While most of these high-end components are impractical for home PC builds and even gaming, we prescribe some picks for what upgrades make the most sense for PC builders.

Craig Roberts Well, lets just discount apples marketing speak for a second (bar the "they never break down" thing ... i don't think anyone that is honest would say that about anything man made) - they are built with the same parts as "regular PCs", so my point is you can be a PC expert and deal with both - just like Will & Norm.

The top end AMD chips are perfectly fine for gaming. In game you will notice little to no real difference. But feel free to pay hundreds of dollars more for an overpriced Intel chip. Not to mention that is one horrifically sloppy build.

Ampharos His opinion is actually right. Years ago his opinion would have been wrong back when processors were changing so much however now so long as you have at least quad core processor with a decent enough clock speed by either company, you're really not going to lose much if any performance. You'll only lose performance for games that utilize and are optimized to use more CPU performance exclusively or with the addition to a GPU. In other words, it depends on the game and how it's optimized.

PC Invictus There is no denying that AMD are certainly capable of playing current games. But there's a bit more to it than that. Intel are pricey, but they do perform better than AMD cpu's. Whether the amount better they perform by is a reasonable pricing, is up to how much money the individual is willing to throw at it... Intel are pretty good and are outperforming their AMD rivals by quite a noticeable amount.. And I am not an intel fanboy, I've been mostly an AMD user since the Athlon 64 era. Just try to see them both objectively (although I am looking forward to seeing AMD make a come back with Zen)

Im sorry but your comment about intel beeing better for desktop computers is just plain wrong. AMD has long had a reputation for providing cheaper, higher performance processors with higher power consumption, as such better for gaming. More bang for your buck if you will. Intels are more expensive, providing similiar performance with less power consumption. This is also true for AMD's video cards and Nvidia cards.

Rob The Plumber that's not true. Ferrari and toyota make high end cars. Just because Ferrari makes cars that are better than any Toyota car (like the LFA) it doesn't mean that Toyota doesn't have a high end option. The same goes for Intel and AMD. Both Intel and AMD make high end cards. Just because Intel's best CPU is better than AMDs best CPU doesn't mean that AMDs CPU isn't high end. the term "high end" is also reltaive. It depends on what you are comparing. If you are comparing CPUs against other CPUs, the "high end" cards are the ones that are "significantly better" than the rest (whatever that means). On the other hand, you could compare cards to the games that are current. This method, I believe, us the only relevant comparison, because it is testing the card against its purpose and it doesn't become a dick measuring competition. I would classify a card as "high end" if it can play the games that come out around the time when it was purchased on the highest settings or at least very close. Both Intel and AMD, according to the definition that I think is most relevant, make "high end" CPUs. But of course this is my opinion, so this is the way that I see it. If you disagree that is fine, but when you make a statement like that people may try to argue with you because they may be defining "high end" differently than you do. And I haven't even gotten to what "budget build" can mean to different people Lol
@cdas6673
@cdas6673 10 жыл бұрын
***** a 60% increase is still a substantial increase in price in my book. If you are looking at cards in the sub $200 range, AMD is the way to go. I'm not sure what AMD fanboys have to do with this. I know Intel makes cards that outperform AMD cards. They just cost (substantially) more. And speaking of fanboys have you read your own post? You seem to be an Intel fanboy to me... I don't mean to discount your experiences, but your sample size does not justify your stance on all amd and intel cards. And I'm not dismissing what you are saying. I am however saying that since we are talking about companies that alone make millions of cards, personal experience is not a litmus test unless you have used a thousand cards from each company. Lol my bad. I meant to say LFA, idk why I typed GTR. And yes the LFA is a Lexus, but Lexus is Toyota. Also, your comment about cheaping out is insensitive to people who cannot afford a $1000 machine. To them, an 8350 or whatever may be the top end of their budget. If you can afford something better,go for it. But it doesn't mean everyone else can.

Guys you made me salivate with this setup ! All that technical terms, lovin' it.I use my PC for gaming, and I work from home. Replacing the boot hard drive with a 512GB SSD, was the single biggest performance boost I have ever experienced in my 21 years building custom PC's. For casual office use I also only install SSDs. PC Master Race proves is again ! Cheaper over the long run to buy a PC for gaming than a console. With PC one save on cheap games and cheap performance hardware + Steam Big Picture, and ability to create my own software/games. Need I say more ? Recently I replaced a friend's slow 7-yo laptop (even for it's time) HDD with a SSD, the performance boost was enormous and was much cheaper than replacing the laptop. Setup: 3x 23" LG 3D monitors, Total 9Tb HDD space, 24Gb Ram, Radeon 7770 + bells & whistles.

Almost the same here, built a good but economic pc at the end of 2008, and except the dead gpu (9800 GT, damned microfractures) that was replaced with an even older one but OCd to over 150% of the original specs and the power source that the first gpu killed (It was my first time building a pc and bought one that was too weak), everything is still holding up pretty well for it's age. Now I've grown so attached to it over the years that I'll probably only change it when it dies.

The timing of these videos is perfect. I'm building my first PC in 6 years and I'd already decided on the X99 when watching this. I think it's worth it because although I won't be spending $1000 on my CPU, I know that when the price drops I'll have the option to upgrade if the difference between it and the 5820 warrants it. The thing that hurts is that a $3000 PC today will cost $1500 next year and by then there will be a whole new line of crap to want.

AMD's "8" cores are odd, they don't really match what we have normally thought of as a "core" for quite a while. In effect, each set of 2 cores in AMD's current lineup is somewhere between 2 traditional cores and a single core with hyperthreading.

Nvidia is much more power efficient than AMD. In fact the TDP for the new GTX 980 is suppose to be over 100 watts lower than the R9 290x. #nvidia4life The new 900 series cards are coming out this week, but then again this could have been recorded while ago. CORE COUNT IS NOT AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN AMD AND INTEL. They are completely different architectures. The only real way to compare performance is benchmarks or the comparisons between specifications between the same "architecture". For people commenting about how apple products are bad/ subpar , that's incorrect accept for the Mac Line-up. Performance/price may be bad, but what apple offers is perfected products in design/build, software. I must say though Macbooks are no good, Lenevo, Asus, Sony, hell even HP is holding some ground.
@cdas6673
@cdas6673 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you said, but i dont think the comparison is fair when you look at the price for each GPU... you can get an R9 290X on amazon for $400. The expected price of the GTX 980 is $600+. It costs 50% more so it should be significantly better.
@acrboi
@acrboi 10 жыл бұрын
C Das Nvidia offers much better driver support, the cards run cooler and quieter. A cooler running card reduces the chances of throttling; so stained performance can be achieved for long durations. Not only that 100+ watts is almost enough energy for 2 light bulbs. That's alot of saved power which may effective your electric bill which can add up. Imagine saving $5 a month, that's $60 dollars a year and not only that you get much greater performance. All in all, if you have the budget for something like the GTX 980 go for it, its $150-200 more but what your getting is savings on energy bills, no throttling potential( there are AMD aftermarkets that are solid (sapphire vapor-x)0, more performance and great driver support. Low-end cards AMD are probably the best as the performance/price is great and the power usage is ok, but high-end builts with single or multiple cards Nvidia is the way to go. 4x290x= full size oven. 4x980= 400+ watts for power savings, thats insane. P.S the new 980 is only 549.99USD and aftermarkets are to be about 599.99USD I live in Canada so plus $100+, as for me this card is going to cost $649.99+ even though the currency is roughly the same and I live 400kms from the border.

Comparing only top end cards regardless of cost is a bad way to compare companies. AMD and Nvidia both make most of their money from their mid range cards, and both of them expect 3rd party cooling on all but their lowest end cards. Sure you can compare TDP but you have to take into account cost and performance too. Apple does not offer perfected "design/build", it's well documented that macbooks have overheating problems, their unibody is fragile at best, the keyboards low quality, etc, the list goes on. Apple offer a fashion product.

Comparing a 980 to a 290X is unfair, one is a generation newer than the other, when the 390X comes out, then we will be able to decide which is the best FYI I just bought 2 970s, greatest card ever...

With round cables instead of antiquated "ribbon cables" cable management is mostly asthetic. A way of getting both high transfer speeds and large amounts of storage is to use several SATA3 SSDs in a RAID0 array, and a decent LSI RAID card. Fairly pricey, and chances of drive/data failure/loss are increased. But if you absolutely need high capacity and high write/read speeds, it's an option.

I'm currently using a Intel i7-3820 (quad core 3.6ghz) it's the lowest end of the Sandy Bridge E. Asus P9X79 (X79 chipset) a 256gb Samsung SSD drive, and an old GeForce 550. You said in the video anyone on a Sandy Bridge E shouldn't upgrade to something like this, probably not since i don't have $2500 to spend on a whole new rig. But should I upgrade to a Ivy Bridge E perhaps? I already have plans to upgrade to a GeFroce 780, but i'd like to step up my CPU so if i shouldn't even bother with a Haswell-E should i just stick with my 4core i7-3820 and buy an XBox One? :)

So I'm putting together a build that can cater for 3D architectural renderings with some simulation type gaming. Upon seeing that the GTX 900 series will be revealed (or released?) in the EuroGamer Expo, surely it would be wise to let them come out and drive the prices for the 700 series down? Am I right in thinking this? Also would this be the same case for the Broadwell? I was already considering using Ivy-Bridge but would it be worth waiting for the Haswell series?

Its funny that they talked about AMD vs Intel. I recently built a gaming machine and i was debating Intel vs AMD. Which one is "better?" I think the key to knowing which one is "better" depends on may factors, and it'll be different for each person. The two main factors are performance (which many people will claim is the only one needed to conclude witch one is better) and cost. IF money is not an issue, that is, IF someone doesnt care how much a machine will cost them, then Intel is the way to go because Intel's most expensive parts perform significantly better than anything AMD makes. the cost/performance ratio is a test of efficiency (bang for your buck). I found, when i was looking for parts to build a machine, that i could build an AMD machine that cost half as much as an equivalent Intel machine. My price range was $600 and below. I ended up spending $605 (after rebates) on my AMD machine. My build is this: MB- MSI 990FXa-GD65 CPU- AMD FX-8350 4.0 ghz (overclock up to 4.4); 4 core with HpTd (8 cpu) GPU- XFX R9 270X Double-D Black edition PSU- raidmax 630 watt (trust me, i know. dont tell me lol) Ram- 1 x 8gb DDR3 HDD- 1Tb seagate (only $50, so i got that instead of an SSD) Case- raidmax (idk what kind lol) for $45 On another note, i thought it was strange that he said the biggest bang for your buck is getting an SSD or a better GPU. This is because your CPU can bottleneck even the best GPU, and your MB can also bottleneck both the CPU and the GPU. So really, if you are getting a better GPU, you better already have a CPU and MB that wont throttle its capabilities. So, if you want to upgrade your system, it might end up being an entirely new system... On the topic of the SSD, the only place that *matters* to me ( as a gamer) is performance when playing a game. If a regular HDD will perform just as well as an SSD, i see no point. Sure, i might have longer loading screens and it'll take longer for my computer to boot or for my game to start up, but that isnt important. On the other hand, if i was doing video rendering, i would want an SSD because SSD's can handle rendering much more efficiently than regular HDD's.

Great video guys. I'm overwhelmed. If I'm going to do video editing, photo processing, is the 5930k or even the 5820k enough? would more memory be the important part and would ddr4 be best choice for these new x99 boards and Haswell-e ? how does spreading $ into video card balance out for these needs? thanks for your opinion. I'd love to keep the PC a few years. i don't think as a video editor i'd need overclocking? stability is probably best once you get to these speeds?

I kept hearing some dumbassery about Intel's release schedule. They always do an alternating schedule. They introduce a new architecture, then they shrink it. Ivy Bridge is the die shrink of Sandy Bridge. Haswell-E is the die shrink of Haswell. Broadwell will be a new architecture. Building computers for 24 years, eh?

It has probably been mentioned, but you do not need water cooling for this cpu unless you are going with some kind of small form factor system or really extreme overclocking. In a larger case you have plenty of room for a large heat-pipe-based cooler. These perform almost as well as water coolers. Water coolers add another point of failure; water pumps are probably less reliable than a good quality fan and a water cooler has both a pump and a fan. I generally wouldn't bother water cooling a cpu. I would look at water cooling for running multiple gpus though. For gaming, you don't need this cpu at all. Most games are gpu limited, even at 1080p. Going higher res just puts more stress on the gpu. From the benchmarks I have seen, you do not take much of a significant performance hit (in most games) until you get back to a Core2Duo. Any of the Core i5 and I7 chips, even all the way back to the i7s with 3 digit numbers (860, 870, 920, etc) all do quite well. With Core2Duo, it may not even be the cpu core that is the limiting factor, it may be the slower DDR2 memory. From the discussion of AMD cpus in the comments, I wouldn't recommend any of the high-clocked AMD cpus, like the FX 9590. This is essentially an overclocked cpu, so the performance per watt is exceptionally bad. Many of the other AMD cpus will run a gaming machine fine since most games are not cpu limited. AMD also offers very good performance per dollar, so for a gaming machine on a budget, they are often a good deal. PCPer put a good video card in really low-end systems and still achieved good performance, so It is best to spend more on the gpu, and less on the cpu. The AMD cpus can claim to be 8 core since they have 8 almost independent integer cores. They only share a floating point unit between two cores. Intel's hyper-threading actually shares a lot more hardware between threads; some applications still perform better with HT disabled. The AMD 8-core (4 module) chips do much better on well threaded workloads, and sometimes even beat Intel competition for such applications. AMD will get a boost from Mantle enabled games and probably from DX12 also. Intel had no reason to push for DX12 because they lead in single thread performance. DX12 probably came about from Microsoft wanting more performance for xbox one, which has 8 completely independent cores, but low single thread performance. They are actually more like tablet or cell phone cores. The power budget is only around 150 watts, so most of that had to go for the gpu portion.

Question, have any of you guys seen any Computer Builds that are using Peltier coolers for the cpu instead of water coolers?
@jamesccox
@jamesccox 10 жыл бұрын
A peltier is not a full cooling solution. It consumes a lot of power by itself; one side gets really cold and the other gets really hot. You still need a water cooler to dissipate the heat into the air. Peltiers are mostly not worth it. You need to take steps to prevent condensation on the cold side and I don't think they handle hundreds of watts very well, which is why they are not used much anymore.

I'm waiting for Broadwell before I build my next Enthusiast grade PC (skipped LGA2011, skipping LGA2011-3). Figure, Broadwell may be the last transistor CPU. It could take 8+ years trying to transition to quantum computing and an OS that runs on it and doesn't suck to use. And if not? Well, my LGA1366 will probably still need to be mothballed as a back up PC by the time of Broadwell.
