that is only via one lens - with two eyes looking through two lenses it is wider than you see in this video and wider than the holo lens by maybe 30% (subjective, i had no way to measure) - but it is not taller -which IMO is also just as important. And yes i have tried both hololens and magic leap. also resolution is slightly better than holo lens - but not two years better and 2.3bn better.... [edit apparenlty it is taller, can't say i noticed that]

A single lens should show the same size on video as you would get with 2 eyes. When I close one eye in the Rift (or the real world) objects to not change size.

But just think of all the money you can save on not having to buy those unicorn posters. What would be pretty sweet though is if it was good, not like this one, but will complete FOV, super high res solid objects and so on, then you'd never have to buy a new TV again, or any other junk for that matter. I could have a book that could become any book in the world, a shelf with decorations that changed, a clock that tells me the weather forecast, write notes to self on the wall, change the color of my couch and change the wallpaper with a flick of the hand, pretty much anything we can imagined that doesn't need to be physically touched. Would still need a coffee machine and a shower or whatever, but it would clear up our junk problem quickly if they could prefect this.

After working with a hololens I can say the small field of view is forgivable if the app is designed correctly. Still, as awesome as this is, it’s the FOV that will keep this from becoming popular.

I work with the hololens too and i have to say i really hate the small FOV. And i agree with you on the point that FOV is the biggest problem to make it a public success. In addition for some of the applications I develop the Hololens is a bit to weak and i need to work around a lot of smaller problems to make it run smooth and fast. Guess Nvidias new rtx 2080 tech could be good for hololens and other ar devices because its made for raycasting.

To save on scanning have profiles Dad living room1, Mom living room1, Son/Daughter room1, Brother room2. Each person has their own setups for different sizes with different locations.

The most compelling demo I tried of AR was video chat. The technician was in another room, and in the AR device i saw a miniature 3d real time model of him that I could hold in my hand and get very close to. But we must consider the setup this required. A Kinect was set up to watch and transmit his figure to me, in addition to the AR headset. And of course Kinect can't see the back of a person, so to get the full "my friend is standing here next to me" feeling at least two sensor arrays are necessary (though 1 sensor may prove "good enough," but like VR tracker arrays I imagine "more is better"). This would preclude immersive chat on the go, i.e. when you go anywhere where your external camera array isn't set up. So, if social presence proves to be the Killer App, then we truly are a very long way from AR becoming mainstream. None of this is to say that I, as a big nerd, won't buy one well in advance of that day though!

I do like how they separated the battery from the computing section since it has heat issues already, keeping the battery away from it a bit would help with cooling. Not entirely blown away by the overall product, but much like the oculus rift and other vr headsets when they first came out, you have to expect them to have these sorts of issues

Super informative and thorough. I think it's important to remember, at the end, this IS an R&D product, as you all said. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to get your product in the wild. When this is full field of view, when the mapping is better, when when when, all those whens mean this is a stepping stone. You can't get from A to C without going through B.

There is an app called dottymesh in the MAgic Leap World you can use to scan your room and extract it. It gives you 15 min to do so and erases it from the database

This technology is still in it's infancy. And I'm excited to see it come in to fruition. I can remember my first PC had a 100 Mhz processor, and there was a turbo button to overclock it to 133. Now CPU's have multiple cores all running at 3 and 4, and even 5 GHz. Augmented Reality could quite possibly be the next massive leap in computing and gaming, and I can't wait to catch real Pokemon in my backward. (Or fight a dragon, or a zombie outbreak.)

My first PC was some kind of 286... But those turbo buttons actually quite confused me - they never seemed to do anything. Turns out it's actually the opposite of what you'd think it does, but 'turbo' sounds better than 'slow down my system to a crawl'. It exists because early PC software sometimes assumed that the CPU speed of a PC was fixed, and then would do really stupid things if your computer was too fast. So... 'Turbo' if implemented correctly is a switch to go from whatever your processor was actually rated for, down the 4.77 mhz speed of the original IBM PC with it's 8088 processor... This ensured that these very early programs would work as intended in spite of the newer CPU... You can probably see why eventually this button stopped existing. XD Yeah, this stuff is in a very primitive state - even VR, which is doing better than AR. Did you know that in terms of pixel per inch equivalents, the current VR headsets are about equivalent to setting your desktop resolution to 640x480? (And the Oculus DK1 was equivalent to 320x240) Think about how far back you have to go to get PC's with resolutions that low and you can imagine how far we still have to go for this stuff... And AR has a bunch of extra technical hurdles that VR doesn't - AR is VR with extra steps, and it seems we are still struggling to get those extra steps working correctly...

AR technology is NOT enough for real combat. If you try to trip a zombie in real life and do it wrong, you get countered and fall to the ground. AR can't do that. AR cannot force you to fall to the ground; it can't force your arm to stop mid-swing because a zombie blocked it with a shield. If you want real combat in video games you'll have to look beyond AR technology.

The promo with the giant whale tho… That FOV wouldn't even fit the whale's left flipper. They made it out like their display tech was something magical and far superior to any potential competitor. But Microsoft has been selling the same wave-guide displays for years now in the HoloLens. And HoloLens 2 is rumoured to have a much improved FOV and may feature variable localised opacity shielding to make holograms appear solid and allow the headset to double as a full immersion vr headset.

I mean, this technically does that too. So does HoloLens. That's what the "wave guide" tech that they're all using does. It refracts the light into your eyes in a way that mimics how real light might bounce off of a real object.

They hyped this thing through interviews that made it seem like this thing was going to change the world! I started to doubt them when they wouldn't actually show anything. Oculus Rift dev kit was $300 and the final hardware retailed for $600 at launch. This thing is $3200 for the dev kit... how much is this going to cost at retail!? $40 dollar shoulder strap... lol.

I'm not a fan of the FOV either. Hololens had the same problem. And I'd like to see a larger RAM option in the consumer model for people who want to map more complex environments. But as for the ghost-like issue and the glasses' tinting...that's 100% NEVER going to change. Those are inherent to AR and effectively unfixable. If you want it less ghost-like, the glasses need to be tinted *more*, and if you want less tinted glasses then you get images that are even more ghost-like. So it's basically at an equilibrium now that likely cannot be improved. The only alternative is to increase the strength of the light projection, which is going to kill your eyes if you want it strong enough to make the images opaque.

21EC But this is something any mixed reality device has already solved. Just show the real world camera view on the same screen as your ar objects. This looks to me like a high tech solution to just get over the "i'm wearing a big face covering helmet" problem of vr and mr. Maybe, if they added an active lcd layer that could opaque parts of the lens where the AR solid objects were supposed to be it could solve the ghosty parts.

Great review! One thing though: to my knowledge hardly any of the current VR HMDs are focused at infinity. It's hard to get specific numbers, but the Vive for example seems to be focused at an optical distance of about 1.3 meters, which is more in a sweet spot of the range of accomodation. Focusing completely at the far end hurts near vicinity interaction.

Maybe not the "Killer App" for AR, but I look forward to real time "inventory" management. Where I don't have to wonder while I'm at the grocery store if I already have a bottle of tomato sauce at home. Automated statistics of what I'm using, predict when I'll need more. Augment my reality, and make the day to day chores of life easier.I'm looking forward to when AR glasses or contact lenses are bundled in with mobile phones

Nemisari I saw someone who developed a thing for AR where you can look at a video game case at the store and it'll bring up a little menu on top of the case showing off gameplay footage and details about the game, it looked like something that could eventually become a part of everyday shopping.

But.. you don't need AR for that. What you're talking about can be done more easily, more cheaply, and much faster with a phone app (because the interaction is easier). Like, maybe if you want a peek into your fridge, this would be cool (but again, phone). But because you can't MANIPULATE those things, it doesn't really help you that much more. You would have to be actually managing 3D inventory for this to be useful. I can't even come up with a practical example of this. (I'm sure someone else can). Honestly, the REAL use case would be much more mundane - have your checklist pinned to the corner of your vision the whole time, checking things off as you got them XD. Stick it in an Amazon Go or Azure-enhanced supermarket, and you can have a full-service grocery experience from top to bottom.

Nemisari I completely agree! To "augment your reality" is to make your life easier. It needs to be something that doesn't take that extra time out of your day to "play with." Your grocery list idea and inventory management but also time and memory management. Placing tags on objects to remind you of something when you are near it. Finding those tools that you had in your hand just one second ago and set down in some random spot.

I look through this comments section and I'm seeing so much cynicism and criticism. Like, guys, you do realize that all this was seen as impossible even as recent as 20 years ago. Most people (myself included) still don't even have VR, let alone AR. Yes, it's imperfect. Yes, it's incomplete. But this is still new territory that hardly anyone else is actually invested in. Its not what we do or don't have that people are complaining about. It's the lies they were told that has people angry. Have you looked at any of this companies promo stuff? They were showing off basketball sized movie quality imagery. Telling people they were playing games everyday in their offices that looked absolutely stunning, playing it off like that's what their backers would be getting for their money when in reality it was just a cgi clip made by a movie company. In the end they delivered something that is not as good as something microsoft gave us 3 years ago and at the cost of billions of backer dollars. It's fine to produce something mediocre but it's not fine to lie and say you have something special in order to scam literally billions of dollars.

Literally all companies do that. When people advertise construction, they use photoshop to make a rough estimate of what it's going to look like. When people advertise robotics, they use CGI to make a demonstration of the perfect product. It's not lying, it's a statement of what they want to give. But we don't always get what we want. This is one hell of a complicated product and it's not fully fleshed out yet. You can't expect them to immediately have the perfect product. Full body tracking still isn't perfected and, more often than not, bugs out and doesn't work. It doesn't mean those companies aren't delivering on their promise, it just means they're not there yet. It's not like they're not sitting on their hands and doing nothing, they are still trying to make it better and deliver what they set out to produce. People just need to be patient.

Yeah disappointing. Patents described a more capable device. Like they touched on regarding focal planes only being 2 rather than the 12 the patents described. No. It's a dev kit. It's not meant for end-users. The purpose is for developers to be able to get accustomed to the technology and start building new experiences. Consider they are hand delivering the units and setting them up themselves. Not exactly sustainable on a large scale.

Disagree. Apples and oranges. AR is for making you real life cooler or more productive. VR is for teleporting to different existing/non-existing places, doing what's impossible in real life and becoming whoever you want. VR is far more powerful, but AR might be much more useful in everyday life. If you think that VR seems to be for niche and geeks - let's not forget that books, radio and TV became huge because they allowed escapism for billions of people.

AR will get more "opaque", and VR more "transparant". Vive's chaperone for example could be considered reality bleeding through into VR. Eventually, all borders will disappear and there will just be headsets which can render both AR objects and complete VR worlds.

It's nice to see some competition in this space. I'd see AR being much more of a mainstream thing in the future rarther than VR. And I know these two technologies compete in different spaces, but regardless. AR has so much potential once the technology matures. I could easily see it replacing smartphones and eventually even desktop computers, especially once we have the technology for cloud processing, then the most powerful hardware would be available to anybody inside tiny AR glasses. Just imagine being able to create multiple virtual screens around your workspace to suit the needs of your specific work. This would also be awesome for casual usage, all your browser tabs could live in different virtual screens. Or how about decorating your walls with amazing and huge works of art? The possibilities are endless.

It looks brilliant, a couple of things that can make it stand out more is the music world in the glasses could have the music videoto the song that you watch and you could walk through the clip so it feels that you are with the singer as the video plays, also how you were on about black holes, well you can have a hole gate where you drop anything in one hole and it comes out of the other hole even if you have the holes in different places, rooms, states even countries, but the only draw back (to make sure people don't drop things they shouldn't) is that the person who drops something is the only person who sees it coming out of the other hole.

Well VR still has probs too, not in the VR itself but in the over reliance on peripherals we don't need. Games should not have to be totally designed for VR. We don't need all the peripherals like special motion controls and such. We just really need to focus on the Head tracking and plugging that into the games we already love to play while using the control schemes we are already used to in the games we already love. Mouse & KB should have stayed a viable option with VR and normal hand controller. Then special games wouldn't have to be made.

Apparently, the 40-degree FOV issue was required to keep the headset cost low(er), increasing the FOV to just 60-degree FOV would have pushed the device closer to $100K a headset. These headsets are really about getting out a tangible product and also getting these headsets into the hands of more consumers and developers. Immersive AR is most useful and financially justifiable right now for business-facing projects, like medical, heavy industries, etc. All and all, the Magic Leap One is a pretty impressive and truely it's multiple bleeding edge technologies wrapped into one device.

Regarding the multiple focal planes: Once you hit your 40s you probably won't be excited about something displayed a foot in front of your face. Not unless it has a built in bifocal mode. I have had two cataract surgeries. I have 20/20 vision at infinity, but without reading glasses I can't read anything closer than two feet in front of me. How would someone like me be able to use the closer focal planes? Does it provide a way to adjust for people who need reading glasses to see things close up?
