Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy Samaritan Carrying Case!

Even though Adam's build of the Hellboy Samaritan prop replica is yet to be completed, the project is at a point where he wants to properly store and display the piece in a carrying case appropriate to the universe of Hellboy. We know how much Adam loves making in-universe boxes, and the Samaritan goes through this rite of passage as Adam paints, weathers, and creates a stenciled logo for the case that his Samaritan will live in between upgrades and additional work!

The weathering is awesome, but I'm a bit annoyed that he didn't do anything to the bottom. The box gets slid around, set down, pressed against objects, &c. and the bottom of the box sees most of that action.

Adam you should look into the perspective crop tool in photoshop! Allows you to select 4 corners of a planer surface and it will crop and resize it to a perfect rectangle. Would be perfect for when you were trying to straighten the typography!

Watching the way he did it was painful to me. He started right with doing a rectangle around the letters at the right perspective but when the edge was blurry he switched to a regular rectangle. That makes tweaking the perspective 10x harder. I once had to do it for a 3d model of an arcade machine. I couldn't find any flat image or scans of the marquee so I took a picture that was at an angle, selected the 4 corners and then with the skew tool I moved things in place and it took less than a minute. I like skew over the perspective one because you can move each corners individually instead or shrinking and enlarging a whole edge.

I was just coming to say this. I tattoo, and have people bring me pictures of cards or letters they want a signature or line from, and I use the perspective tool to just square up the edges of the card with the canvas, and 90% of the work is done.

Hi Adam, graphic designer here too! I usually copy the image into Illustrator after straightening it out. That way, you can get some really exact shapes on your letters by tracing the outlines, plus you're then left with a vector file should you want to create a vinyl stencil on a plotter, or whatever you want to do with it. Just a thought, love watching your videos.

a little trick for stenciling: if you know you're gonna use an adhesive, you can make little stems to the islands, and very carefully cut away the stems after you've locked the stencil in place, so the island floats without any stems but is always on register. it's something Shepard Fairey does all the time.

Hi Adam, I know it’s a bit picayune but the proper name for the part removed is a Hasp, and the loop bit is the Staple. The parts that you replaced them with can more accurately be called a latch. But it certainly looks good. Oh, and It’s a “Cam Over “ latch, witch means that when closing it it should pass over the point of highest resistance, and then as it passes the plane of center the amount of resistance will decrease slightly.. Your latch isn’t doing that, because you aren’t fully passing the plane, in other words, the part on the lid is too far out over the bit on the bottom. To solve this, you either need to shim out the “Buckle” part, or find a way to move the “Bail” attachment point rearward. Then you wont need the bolt. In the side view, it looks a bit like the box face isn’t flush with the front lip of the top. This would account for the failure to pass the plane. Perhaps a strong back behind that face to keep it from “Tin canning”? And no, the original ammo box wouldn’t have a bolt, it would have had a Staple to hang a Padlock. .

'What the font' is a reasonably reliable app when it comes to finding fonts that are somewhat clear in a photograph. Really helpful. Use it maybe once or twice a year but always does the job.

I was the primary sign shop tech at an Air Force rocket test facility Edwards AFB. When I took over the shop it was around the 286-386 computer era when computers cost a lot and sign work was done on semi custom machines. We made name plates for doors to huge mosaics of 4’x8’ sheets of aluminum to form US flags for test stands and command and squadron patch. Out of Hand cut o scotchlite film. We made up fonts copied from Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. all hand cut from our templates.

Mr. Savage, for finding a font in an image, I have come across a website that identifies it (or atleast tries to), its not perfect for what I've noticed, but it occasionally does the trick. I think it was called "WhatTheFont" from "MyFonts.com". Hope this helps.

I find those seldom work in these situations... Unless it's a very unique font, you need an exceptionally clear image. For your typical Sans Serif typeface, it's really like searching for a needle...in a haystack of needles. 😑

@@SteveStanger I've tried it and it doesn't work any better... The only benefit is you can try the fonts immediately. They really need to do a _guided_ tool that lets you define a font by its aesthetic features. Like, not just "Does it have serifs?" but things like "Are the ends of the 'S' horizontal, vertical, or slanted?" "Is the 'O' circular or elliptical?" "Is the capital 'G' round, or is the front flatted?" "Do the descenders on the capital 'R' meet?" ...that sort of thing. The font search tool on the Adobe _site_ is sort of like that, but only basic stuff like serif type and font style... It doesn't get down into the gritty details that really help match a font like the specific shape attributes of certain letters.

Using an angle-grinder without a face mask and the cover for the disk, is downright dangerous and borderline stupid. The disk can break/shatter and those little shards are traveling at an tremendous speed. Once witnessed it happen, a shard lodged itself in the forehead of the person using the same gear at Mr. Savage (aka nothing). His skull broke, but "luckily" only the bone, his brain was undamaged. Take it from someone who's seen it, NEVER use an angle-grinder without a face mask and the cover for the disk.

Thank you Adam for saying when you are peeling up the tape that you are not worried about things coming off. My dad was a body man and painter and would have cringed at the speed you pulled up the tape. Many people don't understand that the faster you pull up the tape and if you did not judge the time the paint is down that it is easy to pull up the new paint you just sprayed or the stuff the tape is on. I don't know if this is different for spray paint as much, but using his automotive paints it could sometimes be a little touchy. Many people also don't know that you can take the technique you used to spray the text on for other things. My dad and I took that all the way to taking the image of Tweety Bird from my floor mats and making I think 10 different stencils. One for each color and background to make an image. I have been asked many times in person how we did it and I just tell them that it is easy and how to do it. I was never an artist, but I found if you look at things from another perspective you can make something that looks like only a computer can do by hand. When you did the text I laughed not at you but knowing the way you did it can be done totally by hand. I have taken the measurements for the letters and just drawn them by hand. You can also take a similar font and use it for a base and then start to reshape them using drawing tools. My mom did this for my dad many times when a customer wanted a badge painted on and not stuck on. She would take the original if we had it and then redraw or even change the shape to fit the vehicle better. We did this with boats, coke machines, and many other weird things people had us paint. We wouldn't stick them down like you did many times but he would have me hold it down by hand. Sometimes this would mean that one of our finger prints wound up on the finished project but we were ok with it.

For pop rivets on our race car, I always used a #30 drill bit. It ends up being 0.1285”, gives just enough play to get the rivet in without too much hassle.

For identifying fonts I use the app "what the font" it's great! I used it to find the font used in Human Era to make my own board for the game. I tested it on your final image and it showed the font as "Boss Italic"

In many cases..I ve seen a role up tool roll..like artist use for brushes and knives...in the military a weapon layout table clothe for the top of your box for weapon cleaning...maybe folds in trifold then rolls up...to hold tools..then strap or bootloader type tie..

9:06 you take a piece of wood, you screw the hinge with two screws both sides of the cut, and then you cut through it. Perfect cut, every time. And if you have a chop saw with carbide teeth, you can align the hinge and cut it with the chop saw.
