Adam unboxes and reviews a collectible rarity: a 1/6 scale replica of the Clavius astronaut spacesuit from 2001: A Space Odyssey! This is a unique collectible in that it's a costume Adam is intimately familiar with, having obsessed over its details in the making of his own full-scale replica of the same silver suit. Let's compare the two replicas!

Hey Adam! I've been working for Executive Replicas as a 'technical consultant' for about six years now, and it was a supreme pleasure to watch you unbox the 1/6th Clavius suit. It was I who created all of the tiny printed text, and who made the difficult call to improvise the text on the chest box, as opposed to copying the Letraset blurb. I'm a huge 2001 fan, and I did research for all of Executive Replica's related figures and spacesuits, and other related TOP SECRET projects. In this video, you stated that the blue IBM arm keypad wasn't shown in the film; that is incorrect. When the Aries 1B Shuttle is about to land at Clavius Base, (time index - 0:39:00) there is a shot of some 'generic' astronauts in the foreground as the Aries descends in the background. Said astronauts do have visible arm keypads on their sleeves. However, the six space dudes who ride the Moonbus to inspect TMA-1, including Dr. Floyd, do NOT have the arm keypads. (presumably to insure radio silence and maintain secrecy.) It is because of this difference that I suggested to Executive Replicas that they make the arm keypads attach/detach with magnets, for maximum accuracy and display options. Yes, I'm a detail maniac too. Adam, we should talk... Your costume and model work are manifique, and the related videos are fascinating and highly informative and entertaining. Cheers! anthrapoid@sbcglobal.net

What a job! The one thing that caught my eye was the 'bubble' curvature of the transparent visor. I had thought that the actual visor was effectively flat in the vertical plane rather than having a noticeable bulge?

Great work, it's a very cool little suit 👍

@@MyklCarlton , there is in fact supposed to be a very slight vertical curvature to the face shield. I think the aspect of the helmet that Adam refers to by saying, "There's a flavor to the helmet. It's such a complex shape, it's so hard to get right" involves the overall shape; more specifically, the back-to-front 'pointyness' that runs from the top rear to the top front of the helmet. In my own defense, I joined the spacesuit project somewhat late, ( but going back to the first Frank & Dave figures) and the tooling for the helmet had already been finalized. Like Adam, I immediately noticed a subtle inaccuracy in the overall shape, but it was too late for me to suggest any alterations. On a more positive note, my research brought about a lot of improvements to the accuracy of details and tailoring of the suit itself, over and above the original suits for the Dave & Frank figures.

Wasn't anything with IBM branding probably made before the lawyers got the the computer's murdery bits in the script, then IBM was either removed or the letters dialed back to HAL?

@@treborsf lol that's a tricky one for the ibm marketing team. On one hand you don't want to be associated with a murdering robot computer... On the other hand look how fantastically smart and capable that murderous robot computer is! Wouldn't you (the potential consumer) like to have such a capable but possibly slightly murdery computer??😂😂. (Btw, I'm a firm believer that it's the robot apocalypse that's gonna wipe us out. I used to think zombies but.... Nah, it'll be killer robots for sure) 😁

When I had to model the "logic modules" I had the same issue Adam is talking about. So strange to listen other people having the same doubt you had. It's fun. In the 2001 production, there are three styles for the spacesuits. 1st is the TMA-1 Excavation Pit suits, of which there were six all made of aluminized nylon. Only one of these "natural silver" styles exists and it's at the Academy Museum. The helmets had curved glazing on them. In these suits the back "memory modules" on the helmets just had the sliver raised retangles without any number stickers on them or kit parts. They also, as pointed out by others commenting, did not have the IBM arm pushbutton control for the memory modules. The concept of the memory modules and pushbuttons were devleoped by Elliot Noyes & Assoc., who were an IBM contractor for design of their Selectric typewriters and housings for their main frame computers. The boots were the UK fireman boot that had a ring rivited to it. The suits had a "bootie" style foot, like pajamas, and you just slipped the boot on...there was no connection to the suit. The 2nd style was the Discovery suits modified by the studio, which were painted in color over the natural silver fabric with a paint mixed with a rubber solution so it wouldn't flake when flexed. The front and back packs were different and also made at the studio and painted orange. The memory modules for this style were black with kit parts attached and presstype lettering. The arm pushbutton was added to this suit. The boots were painted grey instead of the buff sandy color of the original TMA suits. The trim on the hose connectors and metal items on the suit were changed from the IBM blue to black. The USAA patch was changed from "Clavius" to "Discovery". Two red and yellow suits were painted and outfitted along with a blue one for the Podbay hanger. Originally, these suits had the same "bootie" type arrangement for the feet, until Keir Dullea triped and fell while filming a sequence in the Discovery Command Module. After, there was a connecting ring designed and made for the boots to connect to the leg of the suit. Also, Dullea's two red suits had a split neck ring with a connector made so that he could get into the suit quickly. Getting into the suits required some bending and a bit of a contortion to get into the legs and then the arms and through the neck ring. When you're paying your main star actor, you don't want any delays in getting his wardrobe on. Also, the two red and yellow suits were to be ready in case anything happend to one of them the other could be put into service immediately. Some other changes were made to the suits while filming for comfort and functional reasons. One silver suit was painted Green for the Emergency Airlock sequence when it was decided Dullea would enter it without his helmet (the original airlock design had no provision for an extra spacesuit). When Lockwood and Dullea's parts were over (sequences in the Pod, Emergency Airlock, Podbay, EVA parts), which were filmed first due to the stars being on the clock, the suits were readied for stuntwork involving the EVA wire-work sequences and shots in the HAL brainroom. A number of stuntmen and stand-ins, including Bill Weston, Max Faulkner, Arnold Shulkes, and others wore the suits. During the stuntwork, the face visors became flat and the suits got a bit of ware on them...especially during Bill Weston's collision with the Pod as Pooles body. The 3rd style was used for a shot called the "Clavius Hilltop", where three silver suited astronauts, one with a camera, were on a hilltop overlooking the Clavius Base while the Aries ship was landing with Floyd. This shot was one of the last things filmed for 2001 and was based on illustrator Bob McCall's poster art being painted at the studio. Kubrick liked the image so much that he decided to film it. The suits for this shot were painted over the Discovery colored suits with silver paint and the rubberized additive. They utilized the original TMA front and back pack and had a number of color sticker with presstype numbering added to them along with small kit parts to make them slightly different from the TMA natural silver suits (like the memory modules on Adam's suit). The arm controller buttons were painted blue, like Adam's suit. The other two silver suits held by collectors today are repainted silver suits, rather than the natural silver unpainted suit at the Academy.

Wow, you really know this stuff! I'm amazed--- and a little sad--- to know that the Clavius hilltop suits were the Discovery coloured suits painted silver. I really loved those red and yellow spacesuits! If I had Adam's skills and resources I'd have built a replica of Dave's red suit instead of the silver one. Anyway, thanks for sharing all these details!

There is a movie called 'On the Silver Globe' a Polish sci fi movie from the 80s based on an old book. It is a really great movie for space suites. The first part with the satellite as well is very cool. But there is a lot of epic shots with space suite involved. A space suite on a funeral pyre very iconic imagery. Definitely one to check out.

I want that Soooo bad! I actually saw 2001 in the theaters in 1968 at seven years old and even though a lot of it was over my head, I went nuts for it (I was also astronaut crazy of course.) The first model I built in the early 70's was an Orion and I actually worked out a way to light up the interior by painting it flat black to keep the light in and cutting as small a hole as possible for a penlight. At that time, nobody was doing that of course and had to figure it out on my own. Not bad for 10-ishyear old kid, Wish I still had that but likely my memory of how it looked probably exceeds the reality. I saw the preorder for the Clavius suit has already closed. I guess some eBay person is going to make a lot of money off me at some point... ;)

Great suit, and craftmanship! While you're on 2001, I HAVE to ask a question - does anybody know of a plan or mockup for the various '2001 Orion III" BOOSTER designs? Apparently, the script was supposed to have it as a "REAL" Orion (totally-bonkers-/-Myth-Busters air launched pulse detonation fusion pellet drive) BUT it was re-written as a Space Shuttle Booser + Orbiter. I'm genuinely astounded by the background from "Atomic Rockets" (caution DO NOT click if you have ANY intent to get anything done today) which I'll just mention by search terms projectrho surfaceorbit. Should finish the Orion idea by checking on any models of "Michael" from Larry Niven 'Footfall' ?
