Until they make use of magnetic polarity (and the willingness of magnets to MOVE) it won't be commercial. Little coil electromagnets, controlled like a 'video' as a spanned data... I suspect that they could reduce the space between bubbles a bit. And I think that it would benefit the experience, too. I imagine they could do this by using accordion type bubbles, to reduce the amount of space needed on the edges, to allow the travel distance that they're aiming for with the bubbles. Shouldn't need a lot of folds in the accordioned portion; one, maybe two. And it might be good to allow it to form a rounded shape when expanded, instead of relying on the folds entirely, if they intend to leave the bubble density as low as they have it. I think it could use a higher resolution on the fingertips, as we do have a higher density of nerve endings there. Especially considering that people can read braille, and distinguish between the different combinations of tiny bumps. I don't know what the entire inside of the gloves look like, so I don't know if they do this, but… Using a different density for the bubbles, in different parts of the hand, based on the actual density of nerve endings present, would seem like a good idea to me. Another thing I wonder about, is hot and cold… A way to rapidly heat or cool areas of the hand, within safety tolerances, would only add to the realism. It'll probably be a headache to get to work in practice, though. It was the mention of the virtual rain on the hands, that got me thinking about hot and cold, because surely, the lack of temperature change broke immersion a little.

Easy fix for the bubbles feeling separate, add a layer that when two bubbles rise its connected between the 2 highest points of the bubble creating a solid area of pressure. As for force feedback on arms you can use passive locking in a way that you can always pull your arms back and bend them and it never bends your arms or pulls them for you, merely stops you from pushing your arm a certain distance from, let's say a strap on your shoulder, or bending your elbow when an object is against your forearm. Then maybe with legs all you really need is a pressur pads on the sides of your feet to maybe simulate the contact of kicking since gravity and distance is involved with leg motion. A pad that goes maybe inside the sides if your shoe that when you kick a certain distance you feel the pressure to know the kick has landed, same with shin. As for force of Kick it's easier to have a set reaction in the game to keep design simple. Then you have functional arm stopping systems, leg sensory, and all that's needed may be excesorries like vest with magazine pouches or armor that have a chip that loads the measurements and rendering around the avatar of your measurements so you simulate the vest in real life. Load a backpack with pouches for each systems hardware and software once it's made into a compact fit, and then there's the making a really awesome open world zombie survival vr game. The hardest part is getting the textile features. Once you have a system for that the rest is just duplication and measurements for the specific limbs, which mostly don't require any sensory except hands, side of feet and maybe a bit of the arms or torso.maybe make a sensor that vibrates letting you know your arms or legs or back is close to hitting a wall or object in real life.make it to where the walking in the game is done by lifting knees without extension of legs and extension within certain speed is a kick, or held up then pushed out could be more of a push with your leg that stops the object without pushing it away until a quick extension after leg is raised, I hope someone sees this comment Because the zombie apocalypse is way easier than real life
Did they try it with a magnetic fluid? Just curious because then you would could maybe have more resolution points. And you could less cables going into.

The problem with that would be: hygiene. Valve Index controllers might be a better but less accurate solution.

I'm sure that's on their list when he talked about mundane things that take time to work out for the consumer market, it just wasn't mentioned in the video. I get where you're coming from though, and as he said it's going to be some years before they've made this a practical device rather than a just functioning one.

That's great. Someone's made a glove with haptics and I think temperature but it's so big and hygiene would be the problem there, especially if that's used in public places like the new, the neo arcades.

Does it need to use air in this way? It seems they should focus on switching the tactile feedback method to one that can be miniaturized more easily. Air and fluid can simulate temperature, so maybe they should try that while they are at it. I "firmly" believe the resolution should be high in a stretchable material that may fit variable hand sizes, even if there are Sm, M, L and XL gloves. I think the best gloves of the future will be combining multiple sensation capabilities like a small shock capacity (just enough to feel movement across the skin), vibration frequencies, temp and variable speed analog pressure.

or maybe vr gloves just don't work for VR and having controller-glove hybrids like the knuckles are the best way to experience and interact in VR while maintaining the best hand presence. Also care to note that there are a ton of sanitary issues with gloves, one more nail in the coffin as to why VR gloves will never become a thing.

Did you make it into the part of the video where the discussed active Vs passive systems, or just jump in and comment?

@@Denois95 Hi. Thanks for asking, and yes plenty. KZbin is chocked with people bashing tech they don't understand, and or commenting on videos they've clearly not watched; so yes I probably jumped to a conclusion here. Sorry. In my defense if someone posts a joke if they would make it funny then that would make it more obvious that it wasn't a serious comment... 😉

I started to design a similar haptic system that used water instead of air, because I felt water's temperature could be affected more easily and therefore used to better effect when simulating objects of varying temperatures.

Imagine having full body active and passive haptics in VR. You could go up to someone in a multiplayer game and slap them and see them react to being slapped

Soooo if there are “tactile pixels” that push into hand based on what you are touching... does that mean if you slam your hand on a virtual spike or knife will your hand get injured?

How about electro tactile haptics? Small amounts of current at variable voltages and frequencies. Studies have shown that you can simulate textures, force feedback and heat. No need for a big box of valves.
