I think Adam is one of those people with true wisdom, as it were. He walks into a situation knowing some of the steps it took to get to the place it is at. Then, intuits some of the others and then *gasps* asks about the others he isn't familiar with. So, he isn't walking up to anyone or anything thinking, "I know all I will ever need to know about this thing!" Which is the least helpful thought ever. What I'm getting at, is he seems open enough to being given information, that it breeds openness in whom ever he's talking to. So, he listens, asks relevant questions, and then adds examples or analogies to fuel the discussion. Not to mention he is just generally pleasant and charming. It's amazing how Jamie and Adam have almost the opposite personalities, yet such similar interests. I noticed Adam and I do a similar thing when talking to people, where we basically restate what the person just said in a more digestible way, or sometimes offer a story from our own lives that follows the same thread. Some people think it's me trying to act like I knew what they were talking about before them. I just do it to show I'm listening, as well as make sure I have understood the topic or information given, correctly. It also helps me remember it later. Long point short, Adam is a really amazing interviewer! :p

The talking room interviews are like original "TV" interviews, when its about the person and his/her work and personality. I enjoy them, and find them very enlightening. Its also nice to watch a full long interview without the interuptions of the vulgar commercials. Thank you for posting them.

_Lost_ is the best show ever in every aspect. It's just so sad many people didn't understand most of it (finale included), and complained about it creates many questions and few answers. Actually, most of the questions were answered, but one must figure them out rewatching and thinking. But you know what? A good piece of work is that which creates more questions than answers it gives!! _Lost_ was heavy on mystery, and you must pay attention to every detail, and rewatch, to understand what must be understood. What remains “unanswered” is what you must just imagine. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse said themselves in many interviews. Everything isn't just black or white. Use your imagination. Very few TV shows, movies or whatever can compare to _Lost_. But for those looking for mystery and willing to immerse themselves in characters and stories with patience to finally understand what has to be understood, go watch the movie _Prometheus_ (not perfect, but definitely good, and with some _Lost_ feeling) and _The Leftovers_, his current TV show, which is less fantasy thatn _Lost_ and definitely not sci-fi, but it's getting even more interesting lately. Right now I can't find any other movie or TV show with enough _Lost_ feeling and mystery... and quality. _Tomorrowland_ misses some chances, but it's not as bad as some paint it, and definitely they don't get the message. It's not very _Lost_, though. _World War Z_ was OK if you're very much into zombies... although it isn't the best zombie movie, not by far (anyway, as we know Damon didn't write it, at least not completely). If you're into videogames, definitely play _Silent Hill_ 1-3, if you haven't already, and you'll discover at last the best (horror) games ever... All that said... Haters gonna hate anyway, since they do it because they don't understand the plots, and they don't listen to interviews. I'm very glad he's making some more good scripts despite some noisy haters, and hope he keeps doing good stuff, and _Lost_-style. Nice to see Adam Savage interviewing celebrities... He's actually good at it, he doesn't interrupt (much), listens, is kind, and asks good questions. Very interesting video, thanks for it.

I agree! That is the biggest flaw of Hollywood. It's a little business ruled by a lot of morons and nobody dares to say that. Instead the nod yes and orally pleasure then to get into the biz. A business that is structured that way will fail and I think what we have seen the past 15 years is Hollywood sinking in their own oral excrement and I give them another 15 years and their business model is ruined and unsustainable. I would rather invest in HBO to produce good TV than any Hollywood production at this moment.

This was great :D I loved what Adam said about how being an expert is about messing up so many times, and in such a consistent way, that you learn to foresee when a screw up is about to happen and promplty get out of the way :) I also enjoyed a lot learning about the perspective of a high-level writer as Lindelof. Last Talking Room was great in that it helped us see the "logic" behind tv scripts, and now with this episode we saw the other side of the industry with screen plays that involve millions of dollars and massive investments which require a different kind of attitude towards writing. Great! :D If there's one thing I've learned about the Talking Room and other Tested videos with Adam is that the film, tv and video industry is freaking _hard_. Even more than most of us mortals think it is. After watching this, I think I won't be able to "complain" so lightly when a big blockbuster screws up with its story or plot. One really needs to take into consideration the collaborative nature of movies and remember that the finished product is just the end of a looong procedure involving lots of people (which in turn, also makes even _more_ enjoyable when a movie or series gets it _right_)

I don't understand what people have against Damon.. It seems like it's mostly the MIB 3 crowd, the people who need to be spoon fed their stories.. Per the discussion at the 46:00 mark, yeah, some of the most creative work I've done has been in the service of another person's vision. There's something liberating about a) having a goal and vision laid before you that you can buy into, and b) having ZERO interest (baggage) in preconceived notions about how something should come into being. I will say, however, that it's rare to find visionaries like that who can infect your imagination and allow you to do your best work. Unfortunately, the non-professional realm is peopled with micromanagers who just want to copy someone else's success rather than explore and discover (or fail at) their own. < sigh! >

To me Lindelof is the guy who killed "Prometheus". The original leaked script is SOOOO MUCH BETTER! This guy is a nutter for weird plots and twists which are so far fetched that you think he's on acid and they found his way from Lost into "Alien Engineers".

basselope He came up with the ideas, the director okayed them. Which btw also threw Ridley Scott on my list of over the top washed out directors. Ridley had a hidden agenda hence Damon was called in, Ridley should've said to the studio honestly: "I don't wanna do an Alien prequel, you better hire Jim Cameron he's tripping to do that. I personally want to do an Erich von Daniken adaption perhaps we could talk about that another time." But to prove my point about Damon's lack luster illogical, often idiotic writing: -Cowboys and Aliens (What was that? Even the title sucks! Hollywood piece of trash.) -Lost (man, was this guy on acid? It started out very good and down to earth! but after season 2 it became so weird. Most people here in Europe stopped watching after season 4 because it was too idiotic and trippy and people I know that watched it till the end were very much deflated but the ending. I can't judge because I had not seen it.) -Star Trek into Darkness which I found an amusing as a visual spectacle and they had a lot of leeway because I am a Trekkie; but I ended up as seeing it not as a Star Trek film because it makes NO SENSE in the Star Trek Universe. For example bringing Kirk back from his death... That really doesn't lock into the Star Trek universe, even in Voyager they don't have that capability -- especially in the way they decided to do it. Just moronic! And a major issue among Star Trek fans. I hated the last act so much the more I see it the more I hate it. The fact that Spock (the best strategist and logical thinker in Star Fleet) went into an ordinary first fight... THAT'S JUST STUPID! Spock and Khan were the greatest minds in that city they would do a lot more clever stuff than result into a mere fist fight on top of a garbage vessel; a battle of wits would have been far more interesting and Star Trekesk than a fist brawl on top of a garbage vessel! From the top of my head I could write a better third act that is far more inline with the Star Trek continuity. -I haven't seen World War Z, but I heard nothing good from that either. So perhaps Damon has a gift to work with shitty producers and directors or he's just not my kind of writer.

basselope Oh but he did. Dave was a far better character in Prometheus than in the original script -- Dave actually became the only character I was intrigued by. But it wasn't enough to safe the movie. What really killed it for me was in the 3rd act the Scooby Doo scene as I called it. Running with the crashing spaceship. Really?! I had to bite my fist as not to yell at the screen. As a freelance IT engineer and owner of an Entertainment company I pitch a lot of ideas and often I need to compromise. Especially in my work as an IT consultant where I design the technical solutions, that is 80% politics 20% real-work as I call it. But I never do something I am completely against. In that case I rather resign than to line my pockets with cash and aid in their self destruction. But seeing the impressive list of substandard productions that Damon Lindelof worked on I can't exempt him from the utter failure of Prometheus either. Yet Ridley Scott is also to blame for sure (and it pains me to say because I was a massive fan of his early scifi work and he got my county's biggest actor Rutger Hauer on the A-list). But also the studio is to blame probably the most since they had the final say; they really should have replaced Ridley when he wanted to redraft the script. The problem in Hollywood is that ego rules and everybody there is nodding yes and licking arse and sucking cock so they can orally satisfy their way into the biz and to the top. And this model is doomed to fail and I think it's been crumpling the last 15 years and in 15 years Hollywood has allowed itself to be overtaken... Probably by HBO and that sort TV stations that do create top intellectual, interesting and entertaining content.

Raymond Doetjes I can't remember where, but I saw a video in which George Lucas and some of his collaborating writers talked about what went wrong with the Star Wars prequels. What they mentioned was, since Lucas had become a legend due to the first three episodes, nobody felt comfortable criticizing Lucas because he was the legend- so who are they to criticize a legend? In effect, his collaborators unintentionally became yes-men that didn't give Lucas the criticism that he needed. After listening to this interview of Lindelof saying what a legend he thinks Ridley Scott is, it sounds like that might be what happened with "Prometheus." Also in Lindelof's defense, he said that he had those big college loans to pay off, so he may not have felt he had the financial freedom to resign from projects that went bad.

interesting interview, its clear after watching the deleted scenes from Prometheus that Lindelof was not to blame.. Ridley took out material that was integral to the structure of the film and i will always be confused and bummed out about why he did this. the ideas and themes in prometheus are solid. I think Lindelof did a good job salvaging world war z too. on the other hand, cowboys and aliens wasn't that great, Lost made me want to my foot though my tv and star trek was sloppy as f**k (but still enjoyable). apparently Tomorrow Land has issues too, lets not let Lindelof anywhere near star wars any time soon, just to be safe.

These people giving shit to Damon Lindelof are really being unfair I think. He seems to be the main person studios toss scripts to when they can't work it out. And then when he makes minimal changes at best, people are quick to scapegoat him and say he is the common thread. The common thread is that Hollywood wants to guard themselves from taking responsibility of major franchises, so they have a convenient fall guy. Let's run this through the Damon Lindelof filter, that way when this inevitably bombs (as they expect it to) the blame will only go back to him. As if the other creative forces on those projects had no input...you'd think Lindelof was taking movies hostage.

When too many chefs spoil the broth you don't point at one of them and say "He did it." I personally loved Lost, could you elaborate on what your problems with it were? I hated Prometheus at first, but it kind of grew on me. I decided that characters were acting stupid because (1) people are kind of stupid, and (2) post-hypersleep madness! I found it better after realizing the zombie was the geologist, and not the incinerated scientist, a minor quibble. And, I really liked the illusion of David, who was after all under the control of that bastard, Peter Weyland. Nevertheless, certain flaws will never go away. Like, why just forget about the squid baby and leave the ship? David has no interest in studying it? Infuriating. And ok, there is much more, but I will leave off there, because I really want to see where the sequel goes. It can't possibly be worse, right? Bueller? Bueller?

Editing, the pacing of the movie was the main concern for Ridley Scott, if you edit in the scenes that were edited out but included in the DVD release then the whole movie makes much more sense. ComicGirl19 did an interesting deconstruction of the movie on youtube. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4TEfKt4Yp2Moqc That said, I think Ridley Scott had much to little resistance and to much acceptance from the producers and the studio when making Prometheus. Everything that is good is worth fighting for and Ridley had to fight a lot with Alien and with Blade Runner, and I for one think that is one of the reasons those movies stand the test of time. Star Trek ID and C&A sucked because the producers, writers and directors and set designers all seem to have approached the movies as if they were shooting Star Wars movies not Star Trek movies. Which interestingly enough gives me a lot of hope for the up coming Star Wars movies. Well that's my view of things, but hell what do I know, I may be wrong. Lindelof seems to be a nice and fun guy to work with.

What infuriates me most about Hollywood is that I have literally hundreds of Science fiction books written by master story tellers...Asimov, Clarke, Banks, Hamilton, Niven, Heinlein et al. These are books that are positively screaming to be made into films, but instead we have to make do with scripts written by third rate hacks like Lindelof. Prometheus was filled with idiotic characters doing almost inconceivably stupid things. Millburn the biologist was probably the worst example.

I agree, though Lindelof proved his worth as a fantastic writer in Lost. The stupidity of Prometheus ( and other movies ) you spoke of lies on the shoulder of movie studios, cause they want dumbed down stories that anyone can see and understand. They don't want any risks, they want something stupid that is guaranteed to be successful. If you see what the original intended story was going to be before all the rewrites, it was a pretty decent idea. But they wanted a dumbed down version that appeals to everyone, fans of Alien, and to fans of Transformers.

God this interveiw is awkward to watch. Not because either of them is bad at talking, adam is a great interviewer and damon is a great interviewee. but having them talk for at least half an hour about prometheus as if its something he's proud of and not one of the worst films ever made is just hard to watch.

Gave an interesting talk at I think Comic Con about working with Ridley that sounded a bit like he was trying not to say "you do what he says and that's that". It was either an Emperor's new clothes reference or Scott likes to take meetings naked. (And I'm very much not excusing him for everything, but he is smart and funny and a great interview.)

opsin Haha. Now that you mention it, I think I saw that too, or at least some interview where he talked about the problems with Prometheus. It was apparent he didn't really care that much about the project and brushed off all criticisms. I love Ridley and there are definitely some great things about Prometheus, I had high hopes that were let down by all the dumb things in the script.

Prometheus is an amazing movie. The problem comes when you walk into the theater with your own expectations and they don't get met. Walk into the theater with an open mind so you can enjoy a movie for what it is rather then what it isn't.

Alejandro Capitan I was pretty open minded, I didn't read any reviews and only saw one or two trailers. It was visually amazing and Scott did a great job as director, even the acting was good. It was all the nonsensical things in the script that holds it back. Expectations are set when you have a top tier director, with great actors working on a big budget movie in the Alien universe. How could you not be excited as a sci-fi fan? How could it NOT be great? When you hire the fucking Lost guy to write it, that's how. They took a chance with Lindelof, he had very little big Hollywood movie experience. They should have used a much more prove, established writer and Prometheus could have been as good as any other classic sci-fi.

I would like to ask him why Star Trek Into Darkness is such a huge mess. You have such a great cast, but plot holes and vapid logic bring the entire film down. Not even the great performances can save it.

I liked his interpretation on the story as he added so much thematic elements and really honed the tension. But it is kind of lame Ridley wanted to set it in an a sort of alternate universe. I think a blend of the nods and continuity in the original script and Damon's thematic elements and all around polishing work would have made the best film. Still really enjoy the movie for what it is though.
