Adam gets up close to some very special pieces of Star Wars history: C-3PO costume pieces that are part of Anthony Daniels' personal collection, going up for auction in the upcoming Propstore Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction. It's a rare chance to examine the intricacies of how this costume was fabricated and worn, and the nuance in the paint finish that Adam didn't expect!

My son has a few pages of an ROTJ script framed in his room. It's the closest thing to true memorabilia that we will ever own. I still just look at it in wonder. It even has an illustration of the scene from the cargo skiff with Boba Fett. In my mind, those two pages are priceless.

You have to give it to Anthony Daniels for being such a thespian that he endured that costume for so long and in sometimes extreme conditions. I'm not claustrophobic, but man that takes quite the talent.

One of my "life moments" was when I was backstage at a SW event in a storm trooper costume (helmet off) ready to go on and I heard an unmistakable voice from my right rear. When I turned my head it was Anthony Daniels. We were both in awe looking at the sheer number of SW actors, producers, characters, and props mulling around within our shared view. I was struck that after many years being involved in the various projects, he was as wide eyed as I was to see this spectacle. Pretty cool to meet and chat with a legend one on one that day and that he picked me to chat with even though I was a regular guy.

Way back when Star Wars debuted, I was in 8th Grade. Our school dance that year was themed 'At the Movies', & my art class was tasked to produce the decor. I chose to reproduce a full-size 2D C-3PO & remember toiling for hours to get every minuscule detail correct. It looked really good, if I do say so myself. It makes me appreciate seeing this original from the next movie.

Anthony Daniels has a KZbin about wearing this costumes. I seem to remember it's almost an hour long. But Anthony goes into detail about how he wore this costume and how it progressed through the films. It's real interesting. Must see. Also can I say what an unstanding guy Anthony is. Bravo to him for all his work.

One of the most interesting things I learned, many decades ago, is that props used in (very specifically) FILM production - not digital video, but actual film and emulsion media - is weathered to "overkill" proportions. Simply because the inherent "graininess" of film media, no matter how advanced the media and development process, just automatically shaves down some 50% or so of the very fine detail of the piece. So prop people learned early on to get big and heavy on the elements they wanted to show up clearly in the final production. There kind of no other way to do it, and have those details come across in the end.

Props- literally and colloquially- to Anthony Daniels for SAVING all of these things! And saving them in a specific, intentional manner, such that they can be catalogued and identified! So amazing to have so much of the history of that character specifically- but also the history of that film franchise- all together in ONE PLACE: in the original actor's possession. I actually feel badly that it's being broken up by the auction process. I get it. Anthony- as much as we would wish he could- will not live forever. And this very important stuff is going to have to go somewhere. And it is impractical to hope that it would all stay together as a unit. The auction has to break it up, and different people will get to enjoy each having their own piece of Star Wars and pop culture history. And this stuff will change hands more than once, and some of it will get traded and sold from here to there, and some of it will get damaged, and some of it will be lost, or misplaced, or carelessly discarded by someone who doesn't know better. That is the fate of all artifacts, sad to say. Almost 50 years since 1977 is but a drop in the bucket of time; these treasures will (hopefully) be around for the 100th anniversary of the films, and beyond! I really hope that this particular head- which seems to have been so well preserved up to this point- will continue to be looked after and preserved for many more years to come. It deserves it.

A friend of mine was in charge of maintaining the Threepio costume for the prequels, and he told me once that the first one he got to paint up (the mismatched one in AOTC) was a previously used costume from the archives, rather than a newly cast one. I expect it was extra pieces from their stockpile rather than a hero version, or maybe it was TC-14 from TPM, but I don't know for sure.

My parents were volunteering for something, so I was there early and whoever it was showed them to me and let play with them a little bit. Wow! Just from pausing as Adam flipped through Anthony Daniel's original shooting script, you can see the differences. For example, in the scene where Vader chokes Motti, Vader uses the phrase "the Force of Others". This was originally going to be what it was called, but they changed it to simply "the Force" (side note: in Rogue One they had an homage to this when Chirrut used the "others" phrase to the people in the street). Also in the script, it has Vader lifting a cup with the Force. Later, Princess Leia calls it the "Clone War" (singular) and Obi-Wan smokes a chrome pipe. I wonder if the full text of this original version of the shooting script is available online?

Most people don't even know the true history of C-3PO. He was inspired by the robot character (Maria) in Metropolis which was originally a female. This was a Ralph McQuarrie concept that was refined by the crew that made the costumes. It was done so as to not perfectly replicate Shepperton Studios did much of the moulds and casts that were used in all three movies. The original C-3PO suit was made from fiberglass and plated in 10k gold. They had problems where the fiberglass and the gold didn't want to bond for whatever reason so the right leg at the bottom and the foot were different colours. All the later versions in Empire and Jedi were perfect. So it's easy to tell which one is which. The paint that they used was a clear coat with a little white added to it to make it milky which is what you're seeing. This was done to mask the reflections from the filming crew. What an amazing find to have this in the same condition forty years ago. Just imagine that if Star Wars was never as popular and publicly revered as it is and no one cared all these props and costumes would've more than likely been used in other movies and T.V. shows and discarded and forgotten about.
@Thomas_Esson
@Thomas_Esson 6 ай бұрын
Mind if I ask your source for gold plating and problems with bonding on the original suit? Brandon's book describes the finish of the Star Wars and Empire suits as Steinart silver paint coated in gold lacquer. The Death Star droid in the sand crawler is this same silver paint without lacquer, so I'd presume that was also the case with his silver shin (which Daniels described as intentional in a 2020 Wired video).
@solarismoon3046
@solarismoon3046 6 ай бұрын
@@Thomas_Esson This was from and old Cinefantastique magazine in the eighties. I don't remember what year but this was PLATED - not painted in the original Star Wars film. As at that time gold paint just looked like spray paint as it was just that. The plating was presumably from the fiberglass not curing properly and was not able to take the plating as well. Maybe it was tinted lacquer sprayed over the plating? But the official coating over the fiberglass was actual metal - vacuum plated.

@@solarismoon3046 Hmm, interesting. I'll have to see if I can find what Brandon's source was; he did a pretty thorough research job, so I'd be surprised if he got that wrong, and I see a few brief references online to Ron Punter being the painter (who also did the Ark and Ra headpieces for Raiders), but I must admit there appears to be next to no discussion online of the Steinart process or the technical composition of the ANH finish for corroboration, so the record definitely seems more vague than I'd like. Thanks.

Remember C3PO was assembled from basically junk. So you're going to have all kinds of color variations. Having to identical bolts is the anomaly.

I got to believe that the C3PO faux metal finishers drew inspiration from (or should have) - Brass musical instruments: you know like tuba, trumpet, sax... I had a neglected trumpet that started out new, bright, and shiny that looked like it was made from parts of C3PO.

Tarnished horns sound different. Some musicians allow their brass instruments to tarnish on purpose. Not kidding.

@@ModelA My dads is tarnished or clear coat then was properly preserved avoiding green/black aging at same time my brothers medium bore trigger Yamaha was converted to a Medium bore no trigger due to how string for his trigger was always breaking every other month. On brothers now Medium bore trombone it was easier to convert to a Medium bore and remove a wrap and make balance ballast bigger then remove a string and replace with a fully metal trigger as a standard production metal trigger would have had to been modified due to hinges being so small.

You never know; many collectors loan to museums, some eventually donate, a museum itself or a generous benefactor could bid (even high-end prop prices are a drop in the bucket compared to the fine art world), or it could return to market in ten years. But even if it enters (or re-enters) a black hole for a time, it’s a double-edged sword; sales like this one are almost entirely responsible for prompting museums, studio archives, and - very gradually - the general public to finally see enduring value in original props and costumes. If it wasn't for collectors creating a visible market over the past few decades, much of what does reside today in museums would have either been tossed or remained boxed up in warehouses / closets / attics (just like Anthony Daniels’ collection up to now). On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of reappearances than disappearances.

C3PO was so clearly inspired by the Metropolis robot, The Maschinenmensch. Interesting how one of the most beloved IP's in human history. Is basically just a mash-up, a collage, of multiple other past IP's. Space Samurai!!!

Think of Kenny Baker in the R2D2 suit! That was like a rolling trash can. I'd add for a few weeks, UK Pinewood; Mark Hamill/Luke was the only actor on set; Dagobagh scenes.

[0:30] Let's not forget Anthony's appearance in the Ahsoka TV series when he carries a message from Leia Organa as well as all his vocal appearances in animated shows and various guest spots. [edit] Also worth mentioning that C-3PO's original design was heavily influenced by the classic 1927 Fritz Lang movie Metropolis, which has influenced many other sci-fi movies to this day.

About being forgotten on set in a suit, didn't that not happen to the actor who played R2D2? And yes, not all shots of R2D2 are RC controlled, some of the earlier ones had an actual actor inside of it!
