Get one made from UHMWPE about 1" thick, add some padding for the arm (historical shields did) and it should stop most handgun rounds and make an incredible home defense weapon. That particular used here was made more for decoration than actual combat, as the puncture wounds shown on it. If such were made for Law Enforcement materials & don't forget padding for the arm (Crazy important), crazy strong straps & fasteners (ESPECIALLY Crazy important). As an HMB fighter, i do believe that making durable straps is million times easier then manufacturing a shield itself. Especially when you want it to be as robust and have a reasonable weight and balance. Can't forget that this particular shape stayed practical and demanded literally from antiquity up to early modern period. So it was not a bad purchase. It's just sometimes things aren't ready from the box.

I don't know about this specific shield, as I don't know what alloy it is made of, or anything, but shields have been used for thousands of years to stop all types of weapon (from swords and arrows to battleaxes and warhammers) so they are pretty effective at it. And that's considering the fact that most of them were built of wood, and occasionally covered with thin layers of other metal alloys or leather.

Captain America shield is basically like a Renaissance Italian rotella. We see them in period manuscripts being used with rapiers and side-swords. They were certainly used for self-defense back in the day but of course back in the day situations were very different from today; if nothing else nowadays people don't walk around wearing swords. That being said that Captain America shield is not constructed the way of rotella would be. You have screws that dug into your arms a proper rotella would have riveted on straps that would be hammered flat so they wouldn't dig in like that also they often had a padding kind of pillow between the shield and your arm to help absorb blows & not hurt your arm. Walla rotella works well against swords or daggers I think in the modern world it's too lightweight. It certainly wouldn't stop bullets, it's easy to grab, not great for striking with & inconvenient to carry. I think the plastic buckler by Cold steel that Mike tested is a far better self-defense shield for the modern situation.
@b.h.abbott-motley24272 жыл бұрын
Rotellas/rodelas stopped (some) bullets in the 16th century. Martín de Eguiluz wrote that a good steel rodela provided sufficient protection against arquebus shots while musket shots would blow through both shield & breastplate. Of course, firearms have come a long way since then. I wouldn't be surprised in Renaissance steel rodelas/rotellas could stop certain pistol rounds.

@seanwillis87453 жыл бұрын
Yo Seth, if you and Mike like the idea of shields, you should explore the idea of a center grip shield without straps like the Vikings used, there isn't as much shock going into the bones of the arm, and if made correctly can be more durable with cheaper material because of your arm acting as a spring to absorb the shock rather than just eating the shock in your humerus
