Testing a lightweight aluminium flywheel with a Baker Fan and the Wig-Wag Engine, not very scientific in my approach, just a bit of fun really from the engine shed - Enjoy! :)

Glad to see different flywheel materials 'tested' ;) The price of brass is prohibitive for average hobby folk so seeing steel do almost as well is reassuring.

It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. While we may have suspected that the heavier flywheels provided the wig wag engine to run at slower speeds, it was good to see the actual numbers of the differences. I have been thinking about purchasing a digital tach and I am glad to see your unintentional review of yours. Thanks so much for your time and skills.

Hi Ade. Love the Baker fan and the jig for joining those drive belts, must make me one of those. I have a similar digital rpm gauge and I've found it works best if you use the reflective tape supplied. Also hold the gauge a bit further away from the flywheel, the one I've got doesn't seem to like being too close to whatever it's measuring. Cheers, Alan.

I always enjoy your videos especially ones like this. Your RPM guage might work if you use a piece of reflective tape. Just a guess we had to use it when we would rebuild cnc spindles and see how fast they was running.

I also noticed, that the distance of the gauge is important. The cheap thing I bought works only if I can see a complete round spot from the laser on the spindle I want to measure. That requires some distance and a steady hand, give it another try.

Just came across your test and you gave it the best ,,,only one thing was that you keeped turning off the air shut off valve changed the flywheel then adjusted the valve again which you air pressure changed and your wobbler wobbler along at that pressure great attempt

This was really fun to watch. I do think that the real question here is if one could use a brass pipe with an aluminum or maybe even delrin plastic core in order to save cost on the flywheel. Essentially- getting the heavier metal mass as an outer ring and lightening the center as much as possible. How would that fair?

Hi Ade. Talk about timely… I have recently bought myself a lathe and set about building myself a gyroscope per a video posted on KZbin by clickspring. While I am quite happy with the result, it doesn’t run quite as well as the one he built as I had to use a flywheel of smaller diameter than the plan called for - you’re not wrong about the price of (larger diameter) brass stock! Anyway, having seen this video, I am sure a heavier flywheel would make a big difference. So, from my point of view, this is an excellent video and very timely! Thanks heaps for posting. Dean

About the laser tachometer: I was part of a team who participated in the lego league in 2007, and we had major issues with the tracking laser underneath the robot during the national playoff because the stage lights above the game were too bright and there was too much side-light creeping in, making the robot unable to guide itself during the contest. What I learned from that is that light based readings are very sensitive to environment light and that it is a pain to finetune them when you start involving moving shadows or reflective surfaces. Cool video!

Thanks Helena, you may have just given me the answer to the problem, as I recently noticed when using a new camera that the LED panel above the bench can be seen flashing in the video, so I guess the Hz of the light was in phase with the shutter, this may have been affecting the readings of the tacho. Thanks for your help

I'm glad I could help! LEDs when not behind rectifying circuits are only on half of the time, which is clearly visible and explorable using a variable shutter speed camera (pro mode on android devices will do) and can be toyed with using variable power supplies. Many generic dimming circuits on the market today tend to mess with LEDs even further, creating much shorter duty cycles on their off cycle and it has been speculated to contribute to migraines. Anyway, I wonder if just rectifying the LED (or alternatively using a black body or plasma type light source) solves the problem!

Enjoyed the video, and neat test/test results using the Baker fan. Maybe try some stick on lead wheel weights, like used for balancing car tires (tyre) attached to the inside outermost part of the aluminum (aluminium) flywheel to find out if pursuing an aluminum hub with a steel or iron outer rim would be worth the effort.

The bare metal isnt reflective enough for the laser to read plus its a convex surface. Try putting the reflective tape on the side of the flywheel.

I think you would be better purchasing a Hall effect sensor kit with a tachometer. I have them in my wood lathe, metal lathe and the milling machine head which is part of the lathe. They are inexpensive and work really well. They consist of a small round magnet you either glue to the flywheel, or obviously if it's steel you don't need that but if you do glue the magnet to the steel it does prevent the magnet from migrating due to centrifugal force, there is a pick up that will work up to 10 mm away from the magnet and it has a thread most of the way along the body which is around 50mm (2") and it's supplied with 2 M10 x1 nuts and a bracket to fix it with. A simple counter display and all you have to do is put either a battery or a power supply of I think 9v to at least 24v as one of mine is on 12 volts the other two on 24volts. Give it a try Ade!

Hi Ade, I'm sorry you found the Tacho a disappointment, I use one all the time and it's very useful. Watching the video, I saw you holding it far too close to the mark, I find that each job has a sweet spot at around 10 t0 15 cm from the wheel/shaft being tested, each time is different but usually within that range. Also, the Tachometer need to be kept steady, I normally rest my hand on something solid, so it doesn't move. While not being of metrology standard, it does the job for me at least.

Sorry to see you go, there are ways to loose the adverts such as youtube premium. If you compare this to how TV, radio, social media, sports events, and just driving along the road bombards us all with advertising, then watching youtube videos made by passionate creators working for pennies, then it really is a small price to pay to have custom interest content delivered directly into you home for free. I hope you have a good life also. Au revoir!
