Former costume designer/builder here. I love how you guys have no problem handling a rattly, very plastic-y looking mini chainsaw, but sewing scares you. I'd say get a handheld sewing machine, as that would have been the "advanced" version of the thing you hoped to get, but a normal one is really much easier to use with much better results.
@PanthereaLeonisАй бұрын
I have one of those handheld sewing machines, the ones with one spool of thread working by pushing a loop through the fabric, then retracting and putting a new loop through the other one, but mine really doesn't work. It won't properly line up the first loop with the second, and so it doesn't properly interlock, it just makes a bunch of holes and leaves me with a mess of thread to clean up.
@cherachapin3826Ай бұрын
@@PanthereaLeonis I bought the same handheld sewing machine for hemming pants. Absolutely, it is garbage. In da treash!

@juliannafranchini7975Ай бұрын
@@o0superflu0o I’m also a pro costume builder and honestly, in my opinion, I would skip a handheld sewing machine. The amount of time I’ve spent troubleshooting mine was way way longer than any extra time I would have spent just sewing it by hand, and I consider myself pretty confident with troubleshooting machines! Instead, what I'd recommend to beginners is to get a really good, second-hand normal sewing machine at a garage sale or a thrift store! My main machine I use all the time is a Singer from the 1950s, and it is so easy to use simply due to the fact that it’s built like a truck compared to a cheaply built new machine that I could have bought for the same price.

So, I work in the film industry and a trick we do when painting clothing to look burned or moldy is we actually use black puffy fabric paint from the craft store to paint where we want the bubbling ash to be, and then we heat it with a heat gun!! It looks super realistic and it’s one of my favourite things I learned in school. That said, the reason that particular paint gets all puffy is that the extreme heat causes the paint to break down, and that chemical reaction releases some REALLY nasty fumes as a by-product, so a respirator is an absolute requirement when working with it. However, since this paint advertises the puffing as a feature on the box, it may be a different formulation that’s designed to be safer at high temperatures, so that’s pretty cool!
@johnjingleheimersmith9259Ай бұрын
since they mentioned baking powder it's almost definitely just CO2 "fumes"

The second I saw the stitchy tik tok and Katelyn's excitement for it, I felt a heavy "oh no" knowing it was just a tagging gun. The product that would be close to what you're looking for is a hand sewing machine. They're really useful for people who can't use a machine foot or limited arm mobility. You can even get one that acts like a stapler but with thread.
@VoidWalkerOblivionАй бұрын
I do agree, but to be fair, they may have found it unsuccessful even then: those hand sewing machines are not intuitive to use. Its very easy for the stitching to simply come undone when you don't know what you're doing.
@lucidtofuАй бұрын
@@VoidWalkerOblivionYep, I own one of those staple type ones and it does work, but surprisingly very finicky, oftentimes doesn't even catch, much less intuitive than the old sewing machines that use the foot pedal and rubber band😅 Might as well sew it by hand, much better control and no risk of the thread unraveling by itself.
@monster-teeth5378Ай бұрын

They made that Stitchy thing in the 70s. My grandmother had one. They even sold the plastic “thread” in different colors with cute shapes on one end like stars and hearts so they were decorative on the end. It was OK to hold buttons on to see how they looked, or to hold hems so you could sew it, but it wasn’t really something you could walk around showing on your clothes without it looking odd. It did work well to make temporary things like holiday decorations (like adding ribbons to wreaths and such).

Quick note on learning to sew! If you wanna learn how to use a sewing machine, certain craft stores, maker spaces, and even your local library may have classes. In the city I lived in, there's a maker space that has introductory blacksmithing classes too. There are craft stores that sell donated merchandise too; a great place to find gently used supplies on a budget. Especially if you are looking to just try things out. Some have craft classes too.

Bead spinners are actually a thing in beading community for many years, I think. I never had one but I saw people recommending it for beaded crochet ropes that later become bracelets or necklaces. Of course, only for one-colour or chaotic patterns. They are made with seed beads which can be a pain to thread sometimes. I usually don't see any familiar items in these kinds of videos, so I was really surprised to see a tool that I heard about almost a decade ago. But it's so cool to see it trending! 😊 Also - there are mini sewing machines that you can just hold in one hand and sew! You could buy one and test it next time to see if that's gonna save Katelyn's Plane Pants. 😁

The French subtitle for the stitcher are WILD!
@davidskala7652Ай бұрын
I don't understand French so I feel like I'm missing out on a joke or something, at first I thought you ment when the subtitles started in English. it started out with her saying " I have to top" but I was like this isn't that kind of channel lol but then it went French and lost me 😂, so just so I'm not missing anything what was wild about the French subtitles?

@@davidskala7652 One of those is: Make love to me on the roofs of Paris lol

@@davidskala7652 Well, the translation of the French part is: " That I ware in airplanes, but their so long. That's completely wrong lol. Make love to me on Paris' rooftops"
@davidskala7652Ай бұрын
Lol ohhhhhh ok yeah that is wild hahaha so maybe the beginning in English does make sense with that kind of ending when she said she "I have to top" maybe it is that kind of channel unintentionally 😂. Thank you I appreciate the translation.

The instant stitcher never uses thread and the observations of it being just a price gun are completely correct. I received a similar tag gun when ordering something to help with quilting (called a basting gun). The main issue with the tag is that it can itch/irritate the wearer. It's so crappy and marketed as easier than sewing, but I can easily grab a needle and thread and fix the problem versus that tag gun.

The fungus thing is just puff paste. It's a very popular textiles technique at my fashion school. We take the white paste and add any colors. We also always use heat guns. But different heat sources give varying results.
