Testing Golf Cart Batteries with a Digital Multimeter and a Battery Load Tester

Since he was not using the best kind of tester for this, the best way is to use the Golf Cart itself as a Load: - Turn the golf cart key to the “ON” position. - Press the accelerator and hold it down for approximately 15 seconds. (This may be done with the cart on jacks) - While holding the accelerator, use your multimeter to measure the voltage drop of each battery, then write them down for each one. If you have one that drops on average more than the others, then that is a good sign you have a bad battery. You may also have a shop PILE test the batteries. He is using a 6v/12v load tester. It is not meant to test 8v batteries.

just an fyi, the needle isn't going back to 8 volts because he's holding the button down...it doesn't function the way he is saying it does. that massive drop when he presses it definitely tells you its bad though.

test and record the specific gravity of each cell, be prepared to charge for 1-2 weeks to break up remaining sulfate from the battery running down. A $7 floating balls type tester works fine. the "Rolls Battery Manual" is a great reference for the upkeep of lead acid batteries. - a guy who knows way too much about batteries.
