Try using "2K clear coat" on the chrome paint. It should protect the chrome paint without losing any of the chrome effect.

The one week no-touch isn't a shock. Most spray paints say they dry in 15 minutes, but the fine print says it takes 7 days to fully cure. That's probably the same for this. Also, for the parts you coated that ended up leaving bare spots, that could be oils from your fingers that kept it from sticking. You have to clean the parts with soapy water and only touch with rubber gloves to avoid this.

Toy Polloi says he lets it sit for up to a week before messing with it, says this is the only way to guarantee it will be a mirror shine... Also, the artifacts you see as it's curing can be caused by oils. I haven't had issues since I started cleaning with alcohol and paper towels well before coating with the chrome Also, and as well: they make the pens with smaller nibs...

I fudged around with a legends barricade to make a Bluestreak, but my results were appropriately subpar for a first attempt. Definitely didn't wait a week, loss of molding definition, tip far too thick, 'brush' strokes, and finally, gravity. I had used the large size for coverage, think I needed to alternate between large and small.

I also bought me such a chrome marker from Molotow "Liquid Chrome" and I'd painted the bullet holes on my Mvie Maniacs Terminator T-1000 figure with it. It looks so much better with that liquid chrome color now. I saw that marker first in a Star Wars figure restauration video and a few days ago in your video here. I decided to get me one on ebay to refinish a Battlestar Galactica Cylon figure with it. The result looked that good so that I thought it would also look great to paint the bullet holes of my T-1000 figure with it and it did. This marker creates a mirrorlike chrome finish to the bullet holes and it now looks like in the T2 movie.

Adam Savage used this to chrome a snub nosed version of the Blade Runner blaster. He put it in an airbrush instead of using the pen straight. He found he could airbrush Alclad II clear coat on it with no noticeable dulling.

My research on it suggests that tamiya x22 or revell enamel gloss clear works the best to over coat the chrome more than the acrylic coats but as we no enamel clear yellows over time

I used these 2 days ago on 2 toy Marvel Legends motorcycles that had a gray marbelized plastic where the chrome should be. The results look BEAUTIFUL but I'm scared to even breathe on these things for at least a week. I did notice some spots appeared that I initially covered so I touched those up. I also used them on a couple of action figures that had metallic silver parts where chrome should be used. Again, I will handle them in about a week or so and see how it turns out. I have heard that the chrome dulls on its own, eventually and that the paint rubs off upon touching, but again I'm going to wait it out.

He's spot on, this stuff looks amazing, the more coats, the more chrome it looks. The problem is, it cannot be touched (not by a decepticon). The finish dulls on every touch... bloody shame, cos its amazing looking stuff, gives a lovely chrome finish like nothing else.

good job. It's nice to see someone actually being objective about these things. modelmakers are drooling all over them and most of the KZbin videos act like it's the next coming of chrome. They are not. They have their uses but with the very limited durability the uses are also very limited. just one technical note… Almost without exception the "chrome" you find on plastic parts is actually vacuum metallized aluminum and not electroplated nickel chrome.
@camzilla517 жыл бұрын
You're right, I think I mixed up what I read. Both techniques were discussed on the website I talked about. Still, since aluminum oxidizes, it provides an explanation for why vac-metal chrome can sometimes appear to have rust spots, right?
@barpfoto7 жыл бұрын
well....as in "rust" specifically, that can't happen with aluminum since it's iron oxide. but, aluminum does corrode and get it's own (aluminum) oxide. it's normally just dull grey, but anodizing is actually forced oxidation with dye added. so....if there's iron oxide type rust, it's a different type of plating.
@conradsmith93326 жыл бұрын
I love them as I do scale modeling and they don't get handled, hovered er if you want to handle them spray them thin thru an airbrush over a black base, and add future floor wax with an airbrush or by brush. Then they are super durable because I meen, it's floor wax. But that's your opinion and this is mine :)
