Testing My Headsails On My Drascombe Lugger

Today, we play with sails. I bring my 3 headsails with me to the boatyard so we can have a go at flying them all. This is testing the new Bowsprit but also I can't wait to have a look at the new larger Hornet Spinnaker.
We have a nice wind coming in on our starboard quarter which gets some nice air intoi the sails. Can't wait to get them flying on the water!

great vid , that spinny was huge , be interesting seeing you adapt the shape when sowing , the kicker looked good as well, with e jammin g cleat i wonder if that could have been reversed so u pulled down on it, i think my running backstay is done like it, look forward to the next

Yes I am excited to use it to be sure. Yeah the kicker needs to be down or the line falls out of the cleat so I think I had it upside down originally!!!

Nice one Dave. Microphone sounded good. I have bought a cheap one but my breathing is quite heavy, so I haven't got it to something I like yet. 😂

Yes plenty of those here. The owner is trying to make a big effort to get rid of them all but where you put that thing I have no idea!!!

Id be inclined to test it with longer lines ,before cutting it.

Yes I agree. I spoke to a sail maker about it and he said cutting any sail to make it into something else is frought with complexities. The amount of "belly" in a symmetric sail is often a lot more than an Asymmetric one so simply cutting the foot like in the video is probably not a great idea. He said doing what I am doing is the beast way to use it. Either poled out as a big genoa type saile or just use it like I am. Plenty of people use symmetric spinnakers, asymmetrically apparently.!!!

Thank you for this video. The Hornet spinaker is too big, ok. But why not making the mast higher ? You could fix, on top of it, a part (50 cm ?) of a broken Laser mast (not heavy and not expensive).🙂

Yes I thnk ideally it needs t be higher. I have since tested it though and it works really well, but I am currently thinking about making some kind of mast extension.
