Spike Island is a hidden little gem of a place that's so close to home, unyet I never knew was there. On a tip I go down to see if the slipway and loch gates are still usable.
Enjoy!

The number and quality of the slipways in Brittany is something we can only dream of. There maybe a few over on the Wirral side Hoylake and West Kirby.

Yes I agree. On my little holiday motor boat trip up the River Odet, there were slipways everywhere. In the UK you just feel like the noose is being tightened as slipways get closed down or fall into disrepair. There's a good slipway in West Kirby but i'm not sure if its public or not. You have to get the tide right there though as it's very fast coming in and out. A lot of Kayakers use it though. Parking round there at the wrong time is impossible though. I have no idea where you'd park a trailer and your car on the road unless you can store it somewhere else? A lot of DCA people use Meols too, but to be honest the sailking around here is pretty featurless and why I go more West to Conwy and Angelsey.

Lovely look around. Thanks. With height barriers, did you know that often they are not actually legal. In Exmouth when they put a height barrier up at the entrance to the slipway they gave me a phone number of a key holder to ring if I needed access. This is because my boat wouldn't even go under the barrier! They told me they couldn't actually stop access because that could be discrimination 😮

Hmm interesting Tommo, maybe I will make a few calls about some of the ones around here.

@SailingWithDave I often park in roads outside people's houses but put a note in the window saying "I'm parked here because the carpark has a height barrier, sorry"

@@fibber2u Haha!! Yes, they'd have to keep out of the way. I would love to sail the Mersey and it is doable in a dinghy but you do have to pick your day and tide and weather. Last time I was in the Mersey I was on a Rib on a spring tide with F4/5. 8KT+ tide and pretty big waves at New Brighton!!!

There is also Liverpool Sailing Club in Garston by Speke Airport

Called Liverpool John Lennon Airport now: the oldest part of Speke Airport has been developed and is covered with commercial buildings. There is a narrow strip left as a nature reserve and that's the bit that borders the sailing club. But there is as you infer a concrete slipway there that goes a long way out.

Yes I have been there a few times and even went down to speak to them about membership. Very friendly club, however I think for me right now, it's a little bit tidal for a sailing dinghy like Lulu, but would be a lot closer to home for me!
