I have a big sony projection TV that eats the $30.00 bulbs very fast. I am tossing it as I found so many flat screens on the road side that still work. It is a SONY. Is there a good focal point fresnel lens on the front ? It has to be unscrewed to get at it. Looks like a lot of screws too. Thanks

I am freaking jealous!! I want one of them! Are those spot lenses real thick like mine? The reason why those other are diffuse and have a linear focal point is because there are fine parallel grooves on the back side and that is why the focal point is line shaped. If any of them linears are of the thick clear acrylic like mine sand and polish them out. If you plan to do any rock or glass melting make sure you have a block of steel to do it on because if you let melted rock AKA DIY lava cool or glass cool to quick it will break the steel block like the one in my video when heated becomes and annealing base and also have a larger focal point on the melted rock or glass also helps.

One of the good lenses which came out of the oldest TV with the wood grain is much thicker and more rigid than the others. All four of the really hot ones made a burn mark that seems to be a line. I'm not sure if it's because we aren't holding them perfectly or if they are linear lenses but still clear enough to be very hot. I need to do more testing and I may try to convert a linear to a spot like you did. I'll keep ya'll posted. Thanks for all your help!

Hey may I ask what kind of thrift store did you get these not working big screen projection TV's from. Ever since I bought a Ford Ranger I have a couple projection TVs but they were in trucks driving past.

All linear lenses can be converted to spot lenses...😉👍

That is true. Couple of different methods. There is a video showing how a couple sanded a lens down. They also added resin to one side and made it into the spot lens.

Admittedly, I know nothing about fresnel lenses. Would they be the "old fashioned" tvs, circa 1990, that I have sitting in my basement? And was there a reason why you did this in the grass versus on the driveway (which likely wouldn't have caught fire)?

If they are projection TVs they have a fresnel lens. The piece of wood had a couple nails sticking out of the bottom. It wouldn't lay flat on concrete.

Great video. Buying these lenses online is such a ripoff! Don't be fooled by "Real" science power claims made by other people trying to take your money from an ebay store or website. Get a fresnel lens from an old projection TV like this video shows for almost no money at all. The best fresnel lenses come from Mitsubishi, Hitachi, and Toshiba projection models from the early to mid-1990's. Avoid widescreen models from 2000s. A usual good sign is it only has composite a/v (red, white & yellow) inputs and antenna input. Prep on!

I very soon will give you a link to a concentrating solar collector that weighs less than 5 pounds that is collapsible to a form factor that can be packed VERY compactly into a backpack and has a weight of less than 4 pounds that can outmatch by solar concentration any of the fresnel lenses you demonstrated in this video... I will give you the heads up on the design in case you want to produce the video for it instead of I doing such... but yeah.... I love green technology, science and knowing about how to survive... because simply put if Yellowstone Erupts? ... I don't want to be one who has no ability to survive and pass my genes on LOL ... so yeah... add me on your G+ page CountryBoyPrepper .. Love the videos and btw.. yeah the epic fail on the clip.. I agree they need to more carefully consider designs when they release a product taking into mind various modifications users may have LOL.....
