blackpantherjon it should work but just like a normal light it will get weaker the further it goes(something to do with inverse square law)

Good news for Vive users. The Vive lighthouse works the same and lets your Quest sees in the dark. Easy if you already have your lighthouse setup to cover your play area.

The advantage of that is that the guardian should remember it well if it's really in the dark, and might even ask to confirm a different guardian once you have ambient sunlight in the room from playing all night.

Would this risk damaging the lenses? Like how you have to keep them out of sunlight. Maybe emitting IR light poses the same risk as sunlight?

Is the IR illuminator supposed to be aimed directly at you, or aimed away from you so as to illuminate the walls and objects it needs to track? ...Or how about, shining over your head from behind you , so that it illuminates the area in front of you better so as not to flood the tracking cameras? First off, what is your setup and what are you using to call Computer (the way it should have always been but Google and the lot of them messed it up)? Second,...man..im still stuck on the computer command. its the one thing I wished my google ecosystem would do. It is just recipes over ITTT as opposed ot usiing the built in assistants.?

I have a Quest 3 and i just did buy 2 of the "IR Illuminator DC12V 6W Infrared Light Fill 6 Lamps IR Illuminators IP66 Waterproof for Security Surveillance Camera" from Amazon. They are 120 degrees lights. They do exactly NOTHING, NADA, TOTALY ZILCH. Yes you can see the 6 light but that's all.

If you reference the date I made this video it was May of 2019, 4 years ago when the Quest 1 released... Not October of 2023, 5 months ago when the Quest 3 dropped. But with that said I do still have the exact same illuminator seen in video, so I'm happy to see if it works with our Q3's and make a follow up video with the results.

Is only one required, and how would I position it for optimal lighting? I have my Rift S's forward direction facing away from my PC. The 80 ft. illuminator seems like it would be fine and the most popular of the Tendelux IR illuminators.

These outdoor 'security camera' IR illuminators are honestly overkill for what we're using them for. If you're in a typical 15' x 15' home office space you can just sit the IR illuminator on a shelf pointed up at the ceiling and more than enough light will reflect onto your walls to allow for stable tracking. The Tendelux BI8 I used in the video illuminated the entire 30x30 roomscale VR workspace in my shop when I pointed it up to bounce the light off the ceiling.

I wonder if you can use Rift base stations and/or Vive base stations to illuminate the room. They're IR right? But would they work as illuminators?

The Rift CV1 constellation tracking cameras are just that, cameras, they output no IR illumination. The HTC/Valve v1 and v2 base stations output IR but not really enough to make it worth the effort. Stick with the cheap outdoor IR security camera illuminators just for simplicity sake.

That would have simply shown functional tracking in a brightly lit room, it wouldn't have been a value add to a video who's entire purpose was to be short and informative.

Your phone camera likely has an IR filter over the lens.

Currently there is no solution for use in total darkness. There's a 3DoF in darkness feature in the works according to Carmack with no ETA to release at this time.

Im questioning the fact u can use ir light bult while on video call but keep it darkfor you and your camera can just about pick it up still so anyone on the otherside of the call can still see u, how well does that work

The video pretty much answers that question. Notice how when I turn the lights in the room off the only IR light visible is when the LEDs are pointed directly at the camera. The moment I point the illuminator away from the camera and at myself the video is pitch black. You can see no IR light reflecting off me, in front of me, or behind me. I'm not visible even with the illuminator pointed directly at me. This is because most modern webcams and smartphone cameras have physical IR lens filters built in. If you want to be able to illuminate yourself in a dark room with an IR illuminator, you need to use a camera that does not have an IR filter.
