I'm turning 50 in about a month and never knew to load and work a brush. I'm just getting into making my own soap and have about a dozen under my belt; now to try making my own shave soap. Thank you for the videos, very helpful and relaxing...at least this one was.

Hey Jon, AWESOME video. Never really understood the whole brush and bowl thing. I am definitely going to have to try this method.

Hey John! You were right! I watched your video then went to Amazon and ordered the exact bowl you did the review on. It works AWESOME!! I use it every morning and it whips up a wicked lather every time! I’ve been using it for about 3-4 weeks and I don’t notice the little ridges causing any problems for my brushes, perhaps the lubricating effects of the Stirling Soaps that I love so much are protecting the brush fibers the same as they do for my shave. Thank you for the idea- I really enjoy my Subachi Shave Bowl :-)

I love adding cocoa butter to my soaps and for some crazy reason i added 1 table spoon of bentonite clay per lbs of oil and i now get a shave cream like lather to my soap with very little work.

I snagged one of these from Amazon, mainly based on your review. I used it today and IT IS AWESOME! I use a synthetic brush. I was able to build a great lather in no time. Thanks for the heads-up.

Given a variety of textured lathering bowls on the market (Captain''s Choice, Timeless, Pereira Shavery Unbreakable Lather Bowl, Fine Lather Bowl, Hammered Mules Shaving Bowls, Turkish hammered copper bowl, etc), it's odd no shaving-related establishment has released a plastic surabachi. Regardless of those options, a barely textured IMUSA plastic salsa bowl and a synthetic brush work great. Despite the microscopic surface texture, the bowl and brush have no problems making lather (with plenty to spare) using only a pea-sized amount of various soaps/creams spread in the bowl (keeping the soap source dry). I saw one texture design (currently not used in any lathering product I'm aware of) that might provide major benefits over any of the above options, but given the results an IMUSA salsa bowl already produces haven't pursued it. It would be interesting to learn the bristle counts found in a 25mm synthetic, badger, boar and horse hair knots. Perhaps the bristle count is higher in a synthetic knot than in other knots (which may allow it to better produce more lather -- given the minimal quantity of soap/cream I use -- though testing this, I see that a badger can do the same, just not as easily). Then again, lather very often gets stuck in the heart of knots. While creating a lather I periodically extract it from the heart of the knot, add drops of water as needed, and continue to use the tips of the brush to work it until the lather expands to it's full potential.

I have the same shave bowl Jon. It has replaced my other shave bowls as it out performs them by a mile. Plus that 10 dollar price tag is sweet. Wish I had found out about this sooner.

I know this might be a silly question, but I want some input before I go to the expense of buying a shaving brush. I haven't ever counted how many times I can shave my legs with a can of say Barbasol. I wonder if it would be cheaper to do this instead; it seems sort of hypnotic and soothing. Try to turn the experience into a ritual instead of an how fast can I go without cutting myself.
@unclejonssoap5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how much soap you want to use honestly. Even if you don't have any money, the ritual and the quality of hand made soaps wins over canned stuff for me any day 😁

I think folks are over thinking the bowl, this produces intense lather... i got same bowl for 10 bucks amazon prime. .. brush damage? i think for a boar it actually makes the brush better by splitting the ends. i wish i knew about this bowl earlier
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
Yep! I'm not saying I would use it every shave but it really works well and the price is right. I don't think it really damages the brush but time will tell. I've been testing it with less expensive brushes to see what happens.

I've been wondering about the potential damage to the bristles from those bowls. I'd love to try one but I don't want to destroy my brushes either. Thanks for the vid Jon!!
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen any damage to any of my brushes at all. The only thing it might have done is break them in a little faster. No extra shedding or anything like that. You should try it with a cheaper brush first though just to make sure. It's fun whipping up a lather with this bowl :)
@curtisgeorge63697 жыл бұрын
Brown Man Shaves, I have been thinking the same thing. Not sure I would want to risk an expensive brush in a bowl like this over time.

For $10 it's worth testing out on a cheap brush to see what happens :)

Oh I agree. I'm getting some pretty solid lathers from a smooth bottom kitchen bowl right now. I would love to see the cream I could whip up in one of those!
@WingMane527 жыл бұрын
I would stick with boar, synthetic, and cheaper brushes for a while to see. I think once it lathers up the soap would fill in the grooves and not cause any damage. It seems like it has is really fine grooves.

jon could I pour my shave soap in the bowl I want to make some for my guys for Christmas and they haven't used this method before
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
elvishmyst I think you could. Just need to make sure the temperature doesn't change too fast when pouring the soap into the bowl. Might make it crack. You could also make the soap, leave it in the pot and then press it in with a gloved hand after it sets up. Let me know how it works. Thanks for watching!
@johnthomas81936 жыл бұрын
I used one of those bowls once. The texture is pretty rough. I don't want to kill my natural hair brushes so I don't use it. Might be good for synthetics but I don't care for synthetic brushes. It's a dust collector in my den.
@unclejonssoap6 жыл бұрын
It does well with my Badgers too. I just don't push down quite as hard as with my synthetics. Haven't had any issues with the badger hair brushes at all.

I just got one of these bowls. Did you find that the bowl itself was thirsty? I ended up using about three times the water that I normally would in my glazed bowl and still nicked myself just because I didn't quite get the creaminess that I normally would.
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
+David Langly takes a little getting used to. I usually wet the bowl and let it sit for a minute before I start to lather in it. If I'm using a sample, I smoosh the sample in the center first, then wet the bowl. Seems to work fine. Maybe need to add just a little water while you'reworking up your lather to get the balance right.
@davidlangly21517 жыл бұрын
I think I may have one upped it. I found this on amazon: Maxwell and Williams Basics Cirque Conical Bowl, 4.5-Inch www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3ZN7JC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It works great as a lather bowl, but put it in a mug, tea cup, or the bowl from the "premium" shave set from the drug store with hot water and it becomes an awesome shave scuttle the equal of my now broken Crown King Scuttle.

That's what's great about all this.. I don't need to do anything. It's all about what makes each of us happy.. not each other.
