+1 for bahco sockets. was doing some work on my dads nissan, trying to get the rear caliper hanger off. Had a bahco socket on a 15" breaker bar with a scaffold pole slipped over the end. Took 10 minutes of bouncing my whole bodyweight on the fucker before it broke free. Socket was fine, bolt was fine. Great tools bahco and super affordable for the quality!

Stahlwelle and Gedore get my vote. :) I personally usually try to avoid the stuff that's all too shiny and reflective. Also, I prefer sockets with the rough grippy bits.

I'v got a set of combination spanners branded Metrinch with the same weird profile as the KS socket. There quite handy for old rusty or butchered/rounded off nut as they put most of there pressure on the flats of the nut rather than the corners.

Just took delivery of a Teng 1/2" Drive 18mm spark plug socket this morning , it's got a rubber insert for the insulator , just stuck a spare plug into it and ooohhh ! like a glove . You would be hard pressed to find a better way to spend £7.74 . Proxxon have been around for donkey's years and have always had an excellent reputation for making precision mini lathes , milling machines and wood working machinery for model building , watch making and the manufacture of other small dimension projects . I've never had any experience of their sockets but imagine they would be shit hot ! Their socket sizes are laser etched so can't see that being an issue .They also make a range of Dremmel type tools . It's worth checking them out . Just browsing their torque wrenches at the minute .

It might be worth comparing the wall thickness at the corners. I have only broken a few but they all split at the corner, which makes sense because that is the thinnest part of the wall.

I think the KS tool and Bergen sockets are meant to be something called surface drive sockets which is why they have that odd shape
@rationalmartian7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe it was Snap on who developed them, man, must be twenty, twenty five years ago. I think they called it flank drive. The idea is that instead of driving on the corners where they could be rounded off, it drives more on the flat of the fastener. I think they adapted it, or adopted it to their ring spanners too, including combi's. A few years later they developed that weird open end too, to try to overcome the problem of flat keys (showing my years now) opening up and rounding off under stress.
@williamarmstrong71997 жыл бұрын
Yes they are and wonderful too. You will snap the head off the bolt before you round a bolt or nut using those. Bought a cheap set of 3/8ths surface drive 20 years ago and they have all survived all the misuse I have been able to throw at them. Replaced 3/8th Britool breaker bar twice and ratchet about 4 times. Sockets still brilliant. Forget everything else they are all total crap if not surface drive.
@psykoklown8747 жыл бұрын
I remember when Snap-On came out with that design, and they touted that you could remove bolts with rounded heads. I put that claim to the test a few times, and they did indeed work. Their box wrenches had the same design. At the time, they were the only ones with that design, and spending the extra money for them was justified.

Should be interesting to see the results. And yeh, I'm a bit of a Bahco bumboy too. Best Movers/adjustable spanners I have ever used bar none. But I have a bit of a soft spot for them. I used to have two 12 inch Bahcos and a BIG fuck off barring screwdriver, along with a few other bits on my belt at all times. I used to be a Pit Fitter/Mechanic, Pretty much standard equipment for the fitters. Every now and again, depending on where I was working I may replace one Mover for a pair of 18 inch Stillie's. The Movers can be used as foot holds on girder work too. Seriously handy. Merry Crimbo Matt, and everyone else. Go and have a fucking minute. It's christmas. ;-)

Very interested to see the shootout between the best of the best ones here like the Facom, Wira etc although I kind of expect them all to be similar enough to the expectation you'd place on a high end tool from a well established brand. On another note, CK manufacture a lot of welding eqiupment in the United States and are considered high end for it however I had no idea they made tools.

The KS Tools don't seem to be that bad, using them at work quite often. Wrecked a few ratches but the sockets hold up. But how would you break say a 19mm socket in normal use anyway lol. The Hazet stuff is basically the german SnapOn and we have their torque wrenches for the good stuff which are just brilliant. I wonder how the wera stuff performs, I use their screwdrivers a lot - all different types- and they are really good. Proxxon should be good as well, like their ratches, 3/8" especially.

Silverline are terrible, bought a cheepo brake flaring tool as it was one of those tools that the garage always supplied so never had my own, and only needed to make 1 pipe for mot, got one for like £8 thinking even if it doesn't last, I only need it to work twice, Turned up and the clamp/press component isn't drilled centrally so it didn't even work. If I can find it in the garage I will email you it compared to a proper one
@dirtygarageguy7 жыл бұрын
LOL tell me about it!
@ryanmg927 жыл бұрын
The Workshop I will email or message you at some point with whatever I have spare the same size if you want a couple more. Would you like a cheepo impact 6 point just to show the difference. It's something I heavily recommend to anyone who is starting out, a set of £15 job half inch drive impact sockets, will never let you down, then if you want go for thin wall snap on etc when you have the money and experience to know if your gonna fuck something do so. With pretty much any impacts, you can hit them as hard as you want with a hammer braying them onto rusty bolts, and they will basically never break, and seem to round stuff off less since they are generally more rigid
@martinfrench19817 жыл бұрын
I mistakenly bought some foot long + Silverline screwdrivers when i was in a pickle - Bent the first time I used them. They need adding to the "WTF was I thinking" pile of tools.
