In this video, I test different swimbaits in a 13ft deep pool to replicate their action when fishing them on offshore structure for bass. I test swimbaits at 5 different price points using different weight jig heads and get some eye-opening results! I also share tips and instruction on how to retrieve a swimbait when fishing deep water. Hope you enjoy!

Great, information. I was always against heavy swimbait heads. But it makes sense when you see how speed affects the depth and how that heavy head keeps it in the strike zone longer. Thanks, keep the info coming.

LOL this video brings back memories. My roommates and I just about got kicked out of a hotel when the manager caught us fishing in the pool late at night before a tournament. I think he thought we were a bunch of drunks, we couldn't convince him we just wanted to see the action of our baits. I would like to see you try this again with a weight in front of the swim jig similar to a Carolina rig to keep it down. I would also love to see you try this with many different lures. It might be helpful to have a "dept pole" to show how deep the lure is running. I would also like to see it from a distance to, especially to see the rate of fall with a slack line and tight line at the end of the cast, and how fast and far deep diving crankbaits dive. Great idea, please make more.

Jonny, I run my swimbait upsidedown with tail up, that helps keep it down and when it swims it is more straight head to tail. If u notice or ur video the tail down causes rise and the swimbait looks arched or bend from head to tail. If u can try the same video u just did with swimbait upsidedown I think ull be surprised, I also run all my chatterbaits with swimbait upsidedown, just a thought, thanks for all u do if learned alot from u and want to share what I learned from big stick guys in my area

Maybe a normal speed view before and after the slow speed. If you shot with a go pro at the end of the cast that might help with seeing the roll. I couldn't imagine to cast that accurately but I bet you could.

Excellent video. I have very nice results with 1/2 oz jighead and 5 inch swimbait . I do retrieve super slowly and evey 5-7 seconds give it a little pull. Thanks to your video I know exactly why it is working. Note: when on a deep FL canals, with current, I do choose a heavier jighead.

Thank you for the pool time and posting this video. I especially liked the part about slowing down the retrieve. I had no idea how far off the bottom a 3/4 once jig head would swim at such a slow retrieve. It makes a lot of sense to me now after looking back on a fish I caught last week. I had been throwing a swimbait in 12' of water for about 30mins without a bite. During a cast I got a backlash and stopped to clear it. The bait sank to the bottom and rested for 20 seconds or so. When I began my retrieve, I hooked up with a 2lbs large mouth. During my previous casts I must have been retrieving the swimbait to fast even on a 6.3:1 reel. I'm now eager to get back on the water and try what you just taught me.

I actually know for a fact they don't wobble, unless they are sick. When they are sick they can't sit straight any more. Maybe the lure is trying to mimic a sick fish... But most of the fish that a bass will see are healthy... I don't know if he will prefer the rocking

Great info !! I love seeing the underwater action videos. I know it was your first one but a constructive comment would be a straight on angle as well as side angle would be helpful. I was also wondering if line size would have had an effect on keeping the depth level more consistent. Also, if a braid to flouro set up would help keep the bait down? Great stuff though Johnny!! @kylemolletfishing9123

Both. But mainly depth, due to the pressure differences . I use braid with a flouro leader on all of my setups. It helps to negate the influence of having a lot of line out causing reduced sensitivity and delayed user input. And I also use different brands for a given type of soft plastic bait, at different depths. The softer ones still produce the correct action in deeper water, whereas, the more dense rubber compounds will lose action in the higher pressure, deeper water. Hope that cleared that up for you a little. Tight lines.

The biggest difference in these baits is how soft they are. Kind of like a senko vs other stick baits. For the baits to swim well without being very soft, they need a couple of different design features. Give me a shout if you want, and I can explain some things to you.
