I skated my friends board the other day who rides 56 mm with risers, I ride 52mm. He also rides an 8.75 with a much longer wheel base than I do, I ride an 8.25. I have to say, the timing, pop, and height of my ollies on his board felt fantastic. I didn't try any flip tricks but I was really weirded out by how good my ollies felt. It's really been messing with my head for the last couple of weeks, I need to try his board more.

Tip from a hack that rides it all - if you have solid trucks and hard risers as your baseline for 53/54s you can go smaller while keeping some padding (swap to soft risers) or larger while keeping the same weight (swap to hollows/titanium) for wider boards and bigger wheels. Perhaps wheel wells and bones hard bushings. It means you can have a lot of "different" set ups but they're all pretty dialed in for the weight, sound, flick, effort, vibe etc you're locked in on. The thinner the board/trucks the less wheel bite you get, some sort of reverse leverage thing, so bigger wheels work better on thinner boards to avoid wheel bite.

Smallest wheel I know of are the sure grip fibers at 32 mm. They’re for rollerskates and have insane slippage on wood floors. Would probably get chewed up on anything else though

I don’t think your kingpin was catching at 9:05. The wheels are probably pinching the rail too much because of the softness.

OJ wheels in the 1970's were developed for Downhill Skateboarding and some older style pool riding. I have an old 1970 Anybody's Skateboard Book and in there they mention OJ wheels as a newer brand only 5 years old though well tested.

Hey John. The wheels size 50-54mm would not make much of a difference when riding. It would matter when you lock it on rails or ledges. The noise problem mainly boils down to the durometer. Modern wheels are all 100A. The bigger wheel that you have should be 92-95A. Which is soft. The reason why there are no softer smaller sized wheels all boils down to wear. Small soft wheels will be worn off in a short time than harder wheels. In the 90s' there used to be 95A 125mm narrow wheels. But they wear off very easily.

I find it matters most where the truck is, in relation to the height gain from a bigger wheel, since you have less usable tail and a steeper angle of pop with a very large wheel. Longboarders mitigate that by having the tail be flatter, already closer to the ground, so the timing and angle of the pop is similar to a shorter board with smaller wheels. TLDR if you scale up one thing, you have to scale everything else to match.

rollerblades can have something called "antirocker", which is where the middle wheels are smaller to help getting into grinds, those are about 45mm 101a. they might not be the smallest but i bet they're the narrowest wheels you could put on a board also that plastic feel on the snots might be because they're 103a

I'd like to know how much weight the larger wheels added to the setup, had to be a big factor in adding difficulty to getting the board in the air and flicking it around.

70mm are for cursing ruff streets. For some odd reason they make really wide. for me I do not do step hills on skate board since I am beginner. Also its dangerous to go fast on skate board because it unstable platform and you are stand up with no handle bars. If get speed wobble at speed usually the rider get throw off if they not good keep it in check.

70mm wheels are big for a skateboard, but roughly the average size for a longboard. I've seen downhill wheels around 105mm, but I wonder if you could fit those on a street deck. They're also very expensive.

The plastic feel comes from durometer, which I think those are 100A or 101A, which I honestly don't believe you didn't know. Those cruiser wheels are probably less than 70.
