The mongo pushing issue - There's less time to set up so in very specific circumstances it makes it harder, but not impossible. All of my friends that ever started off pushing mongo all learned to push regular, and now they all push regular riding both directions and look cooler than those of us that only learned to push with their back foot

I skated in the 90s and a lot of us pushed mongo. I quit in 2000. I started up again two years ago and heard about the mongo thing so I switched after a week of practicing. That's all it took. Now when I push to ride fakie, even though riding fakie doesn't feel great, the pushing part of it feels like home.

I honestly think if you only occasionally ride switch, switch mongo actually looks cool. Especially if you're pushing hard and going fast. It just reminds me of those early 90s parts where skaters seemed more badass and gave less of an f.

im kind of late with this comment, but to any beginners who struggle with going to skateparks i have a few tips that might make it easier/less scary 1. go with friends it might just be me but when im with friends/people that i like and trust i have a much easier time just chilling and not worrying about stuff. i also tend to focus on my friends and my progress more rather than who judges me and who doesnt. (noone does lmao) 2. let things go stop worrying about the pro skater on the other side of the park landing the most awesome tricks while you learn to go up a curb, do an ollie, or whatever level you're on. i think if i was a pro skater (im really not), the least of my concerns would be to judge beginners. 3. my experience i started going regularly to a skatepark in september of this year with a few friends. i couldnt even do an ollie properly, i could only ride my board. yes, at first i was literally scared of everyone and every ramp, curb, etc. what i found was calming to me is focusing on one object at a time. roll down a ramp for eg. thats what i did first. And even tho its a small park and everybody goes circles (we take turns) standing next to the advanced skaters and being afraid that i was in their way didnt stop me from going again. because what matters is your progress, not what other people might think. um idk if anybody will read this or if it even helps, i just wanted to get this out there because i feel like it could be useful for some. if you dont know what to do, just go skate. dont think, just do.

I was 12 when I first dropped in, I had to borrow someone’s knees and elbow pads to pass that mental barrier. Felt like a baby but it helped a lot. Whatever works for you to succeed and progress.

Knee pads are a great tip for dropping in. It's very easy to just drop onto your kneepads when you bail on a ramp and it doesn't hurt at all. I went to Woodward Skate Camp in PA circa 1990 and one of the exercises we did was dropping in on kneepads on the vert ramp.

I’ve picked up my board for the first time in 3 years because I didn’t feel confident on it when I tried. In a week and maybe 2 days of attempts I was having trouble landing on the board after and ollie. I put on my hockey elbow pads and gloves and I ended up rocketing the ollie but I landed back on it. Now to work on front foot

I think kids should definitely wear certified helmets. It’s sad that most core industry photographers or videographers won’t bother with you if you’re wearing a helmet. I’m glad that’s changing because of skaters like Andy and Mike V. I personally wear a bump cap under my hat it’s not as safe as a certified helmet, but it’s better than nothing.

I’m a beginner and I usually skate alone. I find it easier to focus that way. Too hard to coordinate with friends. I’m an intermediate park roller skater and I don’t mind doing that alone either. I feel it’s easier if I’m working on a skill to be able to focus on it and not compare my skill level with others.

Tip 54 is legit. I'm 36 and me and the kinesiology doctor are on first name basis. After deep tissue massage, I'm given a regiment stretches and core exercises to supplement all the hip and leg action that's going on. Core core core core. It's also just good for life in general to have a strong core... that's why it's called the "core"

@dogburn Amen. The tip about warming up before skating is a great idea too. Im 34, just getting back into skating after like two decades, and did some ollies a couple weeks ago and pulled my right hip flexor (rig by foot was on tail of board). It can take a few weeks to heal, so I cannot really skate until it’s healed, otherwise it’s painful to do any pop tricks and easily makes the injury a lot worse.

Core for sure, but surprised to hear no mention of legs. It's going to be hard to ollie very high if your leg muscles aren't strong enough to y'know, jump. I have an eliptical machine which works some parts of your legs very well, but skateboarding relies on very specific muscles so I do a range of exercises. Doing squats and toe-lifts and getting your legs in shape will make you feel much more confident and powerful on a skateboard.

Doing a handful of ollies made me so sore I wlaked with a limp, those special muscles just don't normally get action. I spent the next month doing leg exercises every day, constantly sore. "Soft wheels for cruising." As if seen with freeride guys, you can use either at this point as mostly preference. I know guys with 54mm soft wheels when they skate street because it makes it easier on rougher concrete. For beginners, get soft wheels to learn how to ride. What I got a local kid to do and told him to skateboard everywhere and his skateboard is to never leave his feet. After a month of soft wheels, he was had so much more board control once he switched to hard park wheels. And yes, you can power slide soft wheels, just determines on the lip of wheel. ALSO, wheel size determines your speed, bearings determine your acceleration. Harder wheels will roll faster on parks, soft wheels are slower. Why soft wheels tend to be bigger. The bigger your wheels are too, the easier it is to roll over stuff. If you ever look at the speed records held on skateboard, look at the wheels. They are giant barrels.

Yep same here bro! Did a couple birthday setups for young beginners. They need a soft wheel to be able to role consistently. Also they aren’t going to be pushing like a madman(us) so softy wheels roll a bit longer.

You're pretty much dead wrong though. Soft wheels don't slide nearly as well. Keep in mind how most 'true' cruiser wheels are like 80A wheels. You really don't want those to learn to do for example pop shove its with, because the stickiness of the wheels will make you primo land and slam. Get some wider wheels that are slightly bigger than average (54mm), like Spitfire F4 conical fulls 99a. Those will be amazing 'all-round' already. "And yes, you can power slide soft wheels, just determines on the lip of wheel." Literally not true. And some soft wheels will require insane force / pressure to get them to slide even a little, not to mention will destroy them. The speed records have little to nothing to do with big wheels, the average downhill skateboard setup would have broken those same records, it just would be way less stable to ride. There are a lot of myths surrounding flat ground skateboarding speeds. In reality you're going to need hills to go truly fast. And depending on the surface, often a softer wheel is not faster at all (due to friction, rebound, wear, etc.) Wheel size only matters so much before the added weight (and wheelbite problems) becomes an issue.

Why I skate with protective equipment: So when I fell backwards from my skate board I landed on my hands so because I did that I saved my butt and back but now I can barely bend my arm to the point that it gets painful when bent a 90 degrees angle. Don’t worry I recovered 5 days after and I’m ready to ride. So I prefer to wear safety equipment and embarrass my self rather than NOT wearing equipment and have more of a chance to get hurt and wait before I can ride again.

15:38 ... I've got a little note about tip 50. At least at the park I used to go to (you'll see why I left in a bit), the crowd was mostly douchebags from my high school and scooter kids. As pretty much the only girl skater there ever, I was the target for lots of harassment and annoying comments. I'd love to see some tips for finding friends to skate with outside of meeting them at the skatepark, because it's mostly been negative interactions there for me :/

So sorry, that sounds demoralizing. I used to skate my local skate park in the middle of the night and one time a skinhead n*zi guy rolled up and started giving me a hard time. Most of the skaters I like skating with I didn't actually meet thru skating. It was thru other interests, like music, and then one day, oh you skate? There are all sorts of skaters so contrary to John I don't think they are anywhere close to universally cool people. Same with music. Even other people making/listening to the same kind of music, I often don't vibe with. It's hard to make real friends, even with ppl who have the same interests.

It is the same at my place - I live in a small town and the evening I tried out skating for the very first time at a place infront of our townhall two elderly ladies might snide remarks about "de damn kids", some teenagers barked at me and when I finally fell some dude leaned out of the window just to laugh at me... I am a 30 sth grown up...😅 Now I just go to a remote parking lot of some shops after closure time and do stuff on my own. This way I don't endanger others or get harrassed and it feels quite nice to cruize across the whole place. I hope you found a good place, too.!

I'm an older skater trying to get back in the sport. I'm having issues with my bushings. I'm also tall an larger 300+ lbs. I tried using black Doh dohs. I think the maybe crushed out freshly out the pack. But this video has helped give me places to start. Also have a lot social anxiety. So go easy on me.

I've always pushed mongo. But saying there's no real disadvantage isn't true. Your rear foot is on the board instead of the front. So while you're pushing, it's really hard to make small adjustments to your steering until you put your front foot on the board. It's super fuggin annoying. But unfortunately there's not much to do about it. It always felt unnatural to push regular, I'm way less stable. And I definitely can't skate any other way than goofy. So it is what it is 😂 pushing mongo is why I never use a board to get around town. Navigating the streets accurately is really hard, unless I have a cruiser that glides like a mafk

Alternative to yoga for training: pilates. Its has a lot of balance-focused exercises, but even in the ones that aren't, your core is involved in every. single. exercise. It has given me confidence whenever I get back to skating after long periods of time. Knowing that i can trust my strength and the muscle memory is active and there. I believe I get comfy quicker cos the muscles react, as if I haven't stopped skating much. (Edit: the next paragraphs is extra info for anyone interested) Btw, if pilates sounds boring, look out for gyms focused solely on it or with innovative techniques. Cos it might have things like in my gym where we have these like bungee harnesses where you do stuff there like throw yourself around in a trust fall or run and jump forward - the most fun. And also there's these hanging fabric like aerial silk dancing, from the ceiling and from walls too. These things take it a step further if regular pilates stops being much of a challenge or is just a bit boring. About the company, for most of my years doing it I had a lovely time sharing classes with old ladies. Some tend to be chatty and very fun to listen to as you workout lol. Nowadays it has become more popular so there's a lot more younger people into it. Ngl I kinda preferred the grandmas' company, they are so chill haha

Tip 29: Yes! Honestly as silly as it may sound to some, including me at first. YOGA. It will stretch and strengthen your entire body. Having a flexible body will prevent injury! If you are stiff, you will be hurting in that Monday morning meeting. Older skaters, take the advice.

I think helmets are important depending on age, experience, and knowing how to fall. When I first started skating my falling instincts always had me protecting my head via bending forward, or using my hands... Which resulted in wrist injuries that hurt to this day lol! Once I started doing MMA stuff as a young adult I learned how to fall onto my side, and mitigate back injuries and such (shoulder injuries are more likely, but that's because your hitting concrete and pavement rather than a mat) so I think depending on how badly you fall naturally it would help determine whether you need a helmet. Also depends on the kind of skating your doing. If you're just doing flip tricks off manual pads, and curbs you're probably not going to hit your head. If you're doing stairs, or other vert stuff you probably should wear one because at certain heights you can't effectively control your fall. You can definitely die if you aren't careful with some stuff. Also depends on how much you weigh as a skater too. Anyways, I don't think a helmet is always needed, but the lack of one, and dependent on many other factors can increase risk of serious injury or death by a lot... it's all variable. We don't want to end up boneless. I'll just leave.

I definitely agree with the last one, I tried dropping in the for the first time the other day and it was at night, no lights at the park, I had the motion and balance mostly down I thought but I tried dropping in and the next thing I remember is I'm on my back with a mild concussion, not fun to say the least, my gut told me I'm not ready. Trust your gut and don't attempt your first drop in at night in an unlit skatepark

Yeah, I really disagree with the mongo pushing thing. Mongo pushing is often done out of fear of the board and a lack of confidence. I think it's fine for someone who is just learning to get started. I totally did it as a kid when I was just starting out. With that said, regular pushing is a necessary skill to actually progress in skating. Regular pushing is so much better for balance and speed that mongo pushing is something that beginners should learn to progress out of as they get more confident in their riding. Refusing to push regular is like refusing to ever skate switched or fakie. Pushing regular is just something every skater looking to improve should commit to learning and will be worth the effort down the road, but don't feel bad if you have to start out pushing mongo before you can learn a regular push. Getting started is the most important part.

Personally I never understood why people even start mongo at all. It felt like I was on a roller skate when I tried doing it and was just over all awful. Felt like I had ZERO board control when I did it. Pushing regular is absolutely easier to me because you push your weight onto your back heel to get more stability between the two trucks. If your foot is on the back truck, you're going to have no control over the front of the board, and it's going to be way easier to push the nose up and slip. That's to say nothing of the ridiculous amount of adjusting you have to do once you gain momentum and want to ride. So to me mongo pushing never made sense even for beginners. It just feels worse.

Extra tip - If you’re not uptight about keeping your bearings in good condition, but have confidence issues about actually landing tricks, practice them stationary in grass. The handy part about that is if you can’t get yourself to commit to a trick at a spot, just skate over to a nearby patch of grass, give it a couple full send tries in the grass to build up self confidence, then bring that confidence back to the skate spot. *Just don’t ONLY do tricks in grass,* or else people are gonna trash talk your style.

I've a separate / spare setup I call my winter board. It's fun as skating in the wet and going through puddles. If you don't look after the bearings once you're done skating them, they can rust so do keep that mind and use an old deck too. At least you can still skate and put your old / spare parts to good use (that way you're not worried about wasting money and 'ruining' your skateboard). Oh btw, I don't recommend skating a park with metal ramps. That's common sense but when I was a kid I busted my tail bone for the second time so don't do that. Was a long walk home backwards. As always, safety first.

Our group collectively stopped skating mongo when we realized that if you hit a rock while pushing regular, you have a much better shot at surviving than if you were pushing mongo. Plus it looks cooler.

I don't know, I'd vouch for tip #42. One of my biggest walls to learning how to skateboard was my poor balance and fear of falling off. Anytime I tried getting a roll going I instinctively pulled back and lost my balance and bailed. As soon as I committed to leaning into the forward momentum and trusting my feet it opened up a lot for me. I have to assume I'm not the only person with that big mental block.

the "speed rings" or washers, the TINY ones that be on your trucks where the wheels go when you FIRDT buy them.... thos things.. and they kinda do.. they let you tighten ya wheels without the nut pressing to hard and stopping rotation from friction. each side should have 2 per wheel spot thing. put one on each side of the wheel"

I agree with most of this, however, you can use a little water or isopropyl alcohol with an old toothbrush if you get something like soda or sticky stuff of your grip tape. Just use common sense, just dip the toothbrush in the water and scrub, have a towel or something to dab the area and keep water from getting on your bolts, bearings, or exposed wood. The grip tape itself is waterproof. Also, something I've noticed about the board not going straight, is that sometimes the bushings are rubbing within their retainer on the the hanger and the base plate. So I had some silicone shock oil for my rc cars (won't degrade plastic and rubber like petroleum based oil), I put a little on the both top and bottom bushings for both trucks and it actually worked pretty well. Yeah that one confused me too. Mob grip is perforated, so I can see why it would be unwise to do with Mob, the water will go thru the grip. But then the board is also woodstained. Do they mean don't wash your griptape in the bathtub or with a hose? Lost me on that one.

About the not wanting to ruin the graphics on your board, I literally became so attached to my first board design that I had to buy a second board because I didn’t want to ruin my first board… I had no idea thats what those little side rails were for!

Fear is huge. I just started back up after 10 years this summer and I have struggled ollie'ing up on this box that's like 30cm tall. I just kept jumping off my board mid air, but finally last week I got it. Instead of aiming to jump up on the box, I aimed to land with the tail trucks poking out, but actually landing on the board. This didn't feel scary and by accident I actually landed the perfect ollie on the box and now I don't feel the fear anymore for ollie'ing up on something. The point is, if you feel fear for something, see if you can break it up into smaller steps that you're not scared of doing.

I love noticed having spacers in between bearings and proper washer placement also let's you take the nut a little tighter without messing up how the bearing rolls. Usually cheaper brands don't work as good but I've been able to actually torque them on reputable bearings and still roll just fine because the spacers are made with more precision and they sit on the bearing race. If you dont use washers on both sides of the wheel this won't really work.

Crapshoot. Bearing spacers may or may not actually fit your wheels correctly. They'll screw up your bearings if they are too wide for your wheels by even a mm. And they will reduce the spin of your wheels since the spin depends solely on your bearings and the bearings hardly spin on your axles, or if they do, you're creating a lot more friction on them by tightening the wheels onto your axles. Just learn to tighten your axle nuts just enough, not too-far, not loose. Safer bet all around

Speed rings are the thin metal washers that go between the truck bolt and the bearing, as well as between the inner side of the truck axle and the bearing.

I didn't know until a few months ago that pushing with your front foot is called "mongo". I can push with both feet, but I'm faster AND more comfortable pushing mongo. Pro Tip - if your back foot is set properly, you can push or brake with your front foot and also lift the nose to pivot the board if someone does the stupid and it's time for evasive maneuvers. I started in '76, but life's distractions have left me rustier than a barn-find truck. Next step? A 12'-16' wide ramp, 20'-24' flat with 5' transitions on both ends, 45° on one side, vert on the other, 6.5'-7' tall. Plenty of 45° flat wall to ease back into berts and laybacks, enough vert to try to get my tuck back. I'm not done, I'm only 63.

5:43 i reckon if your street skating, there is not really any point in wearing a helmet since its pretty rare to hit your head unless your doing massive gaps. Park/vert though would probably be smart to wear one

Tip 55 is too true haha so I sorta learned FS nose slides and by sorta I mean I landed it one time on a flat ledge and it was clean so I thought it’d be even better to upgrade my trick list and do it on a down ledge… almost died twice and stop to decide to stick with the flat ledges for a while until I can bang out the trick 3-5 times in a row before going to the next level. Thing about me is I like to progress fast!

Another tip is to practice tricks on grass, that way your board wont slip away and you can focus on the trick itself, before moving on to tricks while rolling 😁

As a viewer and sub of a couple skateboarding channels, but an aggressive rollerblader, I find it crazy how soft boarders like their wheels. Bladers often have high 80's to mid 90's, 88A, 92A, 96A, or even 98A sometimes. It's just crazy. Then again, our wheels touch the obstacles quite often and a harder wheel doesn't grip as much. That's our wheel bite, our wheel grips the obstacle, causing us to lose momentum. Depending on how hot we're goign on the obstacle and how much our wheels touch the obstacle, I've seen guys get thrown off cause they come to a complete stop. We try to avoid it and have ways to, larger H-block(major grinding area on the boot/frame), anti-rocker wheels that go in the middle two slots that are on the scale above A that are nearly rock hard, mook/freesstyle frames that only have the outer wheels and are all frame in the middle. They work to varying degrees. The best method to avoid wheel bite is, like in boarding, to get good.

I live in a tropical climate, so I'm always skating in wet conditions, and yeah, I have to do a lot of bearing care, because if I don't, they rust in, like, the first month (also the salt in the sea air makes that the case, too 😅!)

When you're pushing switch mongo it makes sense because you're more used to the pushing with that foot. Doesn't mean there can't be an issue with it. 1 small rock, and the front of the board bounces sideways because its unweighted and your weight is pushing from the back, causing the board to shoot out to the side. This is an even bigger problem the faster you go as smaller bumps will move the nose more, and it will increase the chance of speed wobbles because your weight is in the back. That being said, the difference is not that big. But its a good idea to avoid getting in the habit of doing it in the first place, because it is technically worse and is a hard habit to break.

going to the gym to work out a body part for skating is counter productive. You are going to work the muscles you need for skating when you are skating. Way more effectively then going to a gym to work on stuff for skating.

Almost every budget board I have bought was a airwalk prebuilt. Super cheap in the UK, has a real concave deck that's durable af, good bearings and wheels just got to rip of the covers from the bearings and drop some lube in there. The trucks though.. always buy good trucks!! I have had too many get ripped off the board when hill bombing!!!

Tip #34 re spacers: I see people not using spacers and fussing over how tight their wheel nuts are. The inner races of the bearings should be stationary; only the outer races (the parts that touch the wheels) and the rolling balls themselves should move when the wheel rotates. If you try to achieve this without spacers, it's easy to overtighten the nut and put pressure on the bearing, resulting in excess wear and early failure. A spacer ensures that the stationary components of the bearings are the only parts under pressure from the wheel nut. Not using them is like leaving the top washers off the bushings.

Number 23 hit difrrent. I was 11 years old and had just leaned how to kickflip, one day i was skateboarding with some 14-15 year old. They noticed that i had my foot In a Odd posision so they made fun of me. Remeber none of them could kickflip at the time and where just toxic idiots. So i took a break and now im 14 and going to denmarks biggest contest with my Odd kickflips!

I know tip 9 as death straps, and they're a terrible idea for beginners. Having your board attached to your feet means you're not able to run off and have to maneuver any rolls out of falls around the board, so you're more likely to get injured. It's fun when you're good at it and a free trip to the hospital when you aren't.
