I've never had a jointer before and just recently, like two weeks ago, bought this exact model, Craftsman. I have already used it a couple of times with very nice results. i have the feeling that this will be one of those tools that in a short time, I wonder how in the world did I ever live without. At the same time, I don't expect to put it through heavy use and so it is nice to see your review and validate that I made a good choice. thanks, Chuck

That was a very nice review. Pretty thorough without being lengthy. Well done. A benchtop jointer like this seems like it would be well suited for cabinetry, as long as the pieces didn't get too long. From face frames to door frames, it seems like it do the job. Not that you'd want to use it in a production environment, but if you were looking to make some shop cabinets or even kitchen or bath cabinets for your own home, this would be a nice tool to have. That said, reading the other comments, there seems to be a reliability issue.

Hello, LastingBuild with the treadle lathe you can instead of using the bore drive spur to attach the wood that you are milling you can actually glue a circle the size of one of the galvanized flanges to the wood your milling and then screw on the galvanized flange and attach that to the pole on the headstock.

I have this same joiner except it has the Porter-Cable name on it (got it at Lowe's). I'm pretty pleased with it. My question has always been: why would a joiner need variable speed? I just think it's a gimmick to make it more attractive. By the way, it used to be "joiner," not "jointer." In my mind it has always been used for prepping two boards to be joined.

I just bought one of these from Lowes. Setup was fairly easy. Worked great on edging a couple of boards. Turned it on to do the 3rd board and before I could even get the board on the table the motor stopped. Packed it back up and got Lowes to exchange it. Set up the 2nd unit, turned it on, ran for about 10 seconds and it stopped. I didn't even get started on the board. The control electronics in this thing is a piece of JUNK. Read the Lowes reviews before you purchase one of these. Probably more than 50% of owners have had the same issue - motor controller going bad so be aware of this if you buy this jointer. This same jointer has carried the Porter Cable and Delta names as well. WHY would these companies sell these units with such a poor history it can't be good for their brand. There are a number of KZbin postings on repairing the speed controller. In general for the small time I used this jointer I liked it. Size is perfect for me and it seemed to do exactly what I wanted. I have actually decided to keep the unit, bypass the internal speed controller and run it with an external PWM controller ordered rom Amazon. BUYER BEWARE!

We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives kzbin.infoUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.

I’ve got a beginner question for you! I’ve noticed in these tutorials that nobody seems to run both edges on the jointer. Is the idea to only do one side and then use it as a reference on a table saw?
@boomerangfreak
@boomerangfreak 2 жыл бұрын
exactly, with both tools set up correctly you'll get perfectly parallel edges and you could cut it right on size at the same time. Same goes for the flat sides, you use the jointed side as a reference surface in a planer.

one edge - opposite edge gets cut on the table saw. one surface opposite surface gets thickness planed.

Usually paired with a planer to get both large faces flat and parallel. I use a table saw for the second thin edge, then can run it on the jointer to remove saw marks.

As the other replies have said, the answer is Yes-cut second side on table saw. Otherwise there’s no guarantee the sides are parallel. Think of a board that’s 1/8” wider on one side. It might look square but if you joint the second side, it’s still not parallel.

Bought one of these. It crapped out in a few weeks time randomly. Just shut off and never turned back on. Returned to store for another one. That one lasted less than a week. Got my money back on that one. From reading others experience online this is common. I would not recommend. When it works, it is a good little joiner....but both I had stopped working. If you still want to give it a go, make sure the store you buy it from has a good return policy.

Sorry for a dumb question but what is the difference between a planer and a jointer? Not a hand planer, but electric.

A planer references off the wood your planing you got to have a flat side to start with and the jointer references off the bed of the jointer.hope that makes sense.

@@theropesofrenovation9352 They appear to do the same thing, but in order for you to use a planner to make both sides of the board flat you have to start with either a jointer or a DIY jointer sled that you use with your planner to get one side flat as a planner by itself will not accomplish this. Once you have a flat side then you can flip it over with the flat side on the bottom and run it through your planner. Let me know if you need any help.

Same experience as others with this inferior unit, bought it as a portable but didn't even dull one set of blades before the electronics quit. Either buy a good hand plane or buy a better jointer.
