For more context. A compact .22 short pistol generates between 60 and 100 joules. A framing hammer swung over the distance of 1 meter generates between 25 and 35 joules. A 40 gram bean bag from a shotgun produces 80 to 90 joules, but spread out over a serface area of about 4 inches. Swinging a 3/4 inch diameter stick 24 inches long over the space of a meter produces between 30 and 50 joules. Falling onto the ground while running (provided you don't attempt to catch yourself) can generate between 40 and 80 joules. All of these things are potentially (and probably) lethal, esp. if it hits you in the head. Small bones generally start breaking around 40 joules and large bones generally start breaking around 80 joules, but the exact nature of the impact, angle, anatomy and leverage makes a huge difference in those numbers. Damage could potentially happen as much as 20 joules lower or higher than that. A weighted, semisolid projectile 7/16 inch diameter producing 39 joules of force is also absolutely a probabilistically lethal round. Definitely Don't Do This At Home!

Your calculations sound a bit off. I estimated a falling body. Lets say your weighing 100kg and you fall 1 meter (reasonable for a trip?), so you'd impact with 9,81 m/s that gives us 4811.81 Joule already.

@@i.c.wiener2750 you're not actually wrong, but often these things don't translate to the real world. I didn't actually calculate the body falling, but I've been into martial arts and physics my entire life. Realistically it's not 100kg falling 1 meter. It's more like 100kg distributed along a stick that's standing upright and tipping over. Not only does it work out to a lot less energy, but the impact is spread out over a pretty big area. Either way, if falling actually generated over 4 thousand joules humans would be dying off by the hundreds of thousands every day.

To impact at 9.81m/s you need to fall for a second, so 5m. Otherwise E=mgh, so 100 kg from 1m is 981J. But you take that over a large surface.

Although it is an important point, if you can you should definitely just go for a firearm. The issue is that your home is the last line if you're unprepared. That's the important distinction. A firearm is absolute every time (just so long as you aren't unreasonably inaccurate), even in the most dire of situations. If this is the best you can get than it isn't a question, but if it isn't then don't unless you live by yourself.

@@Joreel Of course the tool should be used under the proper circumstances. Pulling a firearm on something that rarely needs it is stupid. At the same time, you shouldn't be afraid of using the more effective device for unknown/risky situations. Those would be break-ins and suspicious individuals. Using it on people you just don't like on the other hand is just selfish and cowardly. His example of a psychotic ex. I think that's more complicated. 1 time is a warning, so it shouldn't need a lethal reaction. Anything after that though, the person is too crazy to be safely kept around, and it's their actions that show that since no sane and respectable person would return after a warning unless they're willing to reach extreme measures. Luckily I live in a state that is more lenient on gun ownership and self-defense, but my statement is for those protecting others besides themselves. When the lives of loved ones are on the line, sacrificing one's own freedom and maybe even life is already a forethought (or at least should be).

When shit hits the fan you have less than 2 seconds to stop the threat. You're not going to be switching between weapon options mid catastrophy.

@@aydinsha it depends. If it's just some random stranger (UNKNOWN threat or threats) Who's already IN your home, maybe you should step it up. But if it's a KNOWN threat (aka you know the person, their capabilities and motives) Who is just outside being a dick, that leaves you with way more options. Also, as stated in the video, not everyone can have or want to have firearms. Here in Germany for example, we usually can't have guns for home or self defense. (We also can't have pepper ball dispensers with more than 7.5 Jules... So... Damn...) But still, some people just refuse to have a gun (absolutely within their rights, even if I personally disagree) And others might have reservations to take a life (most people btw, even the ones who are oh so tough... They are not.) Amd than also, if you KNOW the threat and its capability, you can make a pretty well informed decision. If the threat is NOT a threat to your life, maybe think twice about killing him... Even when it's technically legal... Or, even if you are that rare individual, who actually can take someone's life without remorse (unlikely but certainly possible) even when you know for a fact that the person can't or won't kill you (very possible with known threats) and even if you would escalate to lethal force whenever (technically) justified (which would be well within your rights) than that's still just you and your decision. Other people might decide to take the risk (which is kinda small anyways since we're still taking about a known threat) and take the non or less lethal option as a primary and the lethal option as a backup. It's what I would do and what probably most people should do. In the end it's a very personal and individual decision, based on a shitton of variables, most of them are kimda clear with known threats.

Though to make people have the idea of its capability, I think it should be called deterrence. That way people won't fool themselves into situations that this could put them into. If a second person can take up the firearm then it can be excused as a first option since the other person would be there at the ready, but if it's only one acting then that is a different story since that's a whole lot for one to do and decide in such a potentially short time.

I have one and a Byrna HD. Both excellent. The cool thing about these is you can stack your rounds. I stack 7 rounds as rubber/steel, OC gas, rubber/steel, OC gas/ the rest rubber/steel. You can put the rounds in which ever way you feel the need to. Suggestion: Buy the orange versions of these weapons. I think it’s good to know this is not a firearm in most situations.

I'd rather someone in my home thinks it's a real gun. Police are knocking my door down as I play by the rules. I would not carry this outside concealed, too bulky in my opinion for that. But for the home, especially where I live (basically in top of neighbors in any direction) I could see this being viable to prevent over penitration. If someone was to carry this in public I could also see orange being a good option, but I feel conceal n carry is best with a compact shorter barrel actual fire arm.

i have been in many physical altercations. i live in a bad area. i carry two guns - a 357 and a backup revolver in 22 mag. that said, i feel like OC spray (less lethal) will cover 90% of problems. you are totally right, and the crowd who thinks otherwise has never actually dealt with real violence.

39J meant next to nothing to me, so I looked up some things to compare it to. A .22LR from a rifle is about 180J, a 9mm defensive load will be about 550J, or an arrow fired from a compound bow for hunting will typically be around 100J. The arrow is going to have less energy because the energy calculation square the velocity, so with an arrow's higher mass and lower velocity, it has less energy. The arrow overcomes this by the shape of the arrowhead and momentum. The takeaway I'm getting is that the pepper balls are going to be miserable to be hit with, and the hard ammo may actually be lethal, depending on where it hits. You definitely don't want one of these hitting you in the head or throat.

Look up captive bolt research, 68 joules is listed as inneffective stun and 450 joules is often not enough to kill cattle. 100 joules to a human head is probably going to cause some brain damage but they will probably live.

Next time on Houston Jones. 😬 Very insightful video. This would be an excellent alternative in circumstances where maybe people have issues with mentally ill/addicted loved ones. Where the loved one is an active threat and escalating and you need a deterrent until law enforcement arrives. The impact zone is immediately noticeable through the chest hair, I though it had removed skin like a rock salt round would, still immediately noticeable after 4 days.

I just saw a badgecam earlier today where a subject without a shirt was hit with a beanbag round from a shotgun and it penetrated his chest cavity resulting in his death. Fabric layer(s) over soft tissue do spread out the force and tend to prevent/reduce over-penetration, which is likely why he wore a hoodie and t-shirt. Plus his chest hair probably helped, too. 😃I certainly wouldn't want to test this shirtless. As a teen in the early '80's I had a friend shoot me with my pellet rifle with ten pumps at 100', while wearing a t-shirt, flannel shirt and military jacket. While it did not penetrate the fabric, it did leave a blackened center with a 2" welt and I was jumping around like a wounded jackrabbit. other areas were protected with plywood.

1. This can kill someone when loaded with metal projectiles, thus it is lethal force to a jury. (Imagine an eye hit from 3 feet away) 2. It's not orange, it looks like a gun. To an untrained ear, it sounds like a gun. If you pull this on a guy - you just elevated the verbal/fisticuffs fight to a gunfight. When they hear that thing crack off, they're going to assume they're getting shot with a real gun. Maybe that makes them run away? Maybe it makes them draw a real gun and smoke you.

The only downside is the whole "I can't breathe" aspect. Could be very difficult maintaining forcible restraint on a perp under the conditions some of these pepperballs/spray inflict onto a body and have it hold up in court. I really DO like the idea tho! Perhaps just a different chemical mix.

So, for the house. Have you ever considered just using a paintball gun ? I worked for a mechanic, he had a back lot full of junkers. We'd constantly get people coming to steal scrap, we had a "security guard". And his weapon of choice was a Tippman 98 modded to shoot hard with a mix of pepper and rubber balls. He used it multiple times without getting reported, and every time the poor bastard scrambled out however they got in

This is by far the most impressive less lethal human demonstration on KZbin period bottomline. No one dared to get shot by the Grimburg TCP/FSC modified less lethal launcher. But this badass took a shot in the chest, he deserves more subscribers/views. Plus he does have an awesome real self defense life situations

*I used to play paintball and always had a backup hand paintball CO2 shooter tucked in the back of my hip, but for gosh stake it didn't make noises like that! It was mostly quiet like a normal rifle paintball gun is.* *And you can hit a quarter at football length easily with the rifle gun and yes it still hurt like hell.* *Get shot close up and you will have big fat black and blue swollen bruises, even through your protective gears.* *PSI in paintball tournaments are regulated for safety reason.* *If your PSI is set even 1 PSI over, you're DQ.*

Hi, Mike! I love watching your videos on combat sports and self-defense because of how you test those theories/techniques and you make really good points about them. Your "no-nonsense" approach is amazing, and I really appreciate you making these videos. I have a question regarding items for self-defense. What do you think of combat boots or safety boots with a steel toe cap and kevlar midsole for self-defense? Would the added protection and weight make it a great self-defense aid? Assuming the person trains in combat sports like kickboxing or Muay Thai and would like to add a bit of oomph & safety to his kicks in street self-defense situations. Since combat boots are readily available to civilians and are perfectly legal even in countries where weapons are banned, would they be a viable self-defense option? Could you perhaps provide some insight on that? If possible, maybe you could even consider making this a topic in your upcoming videos.
