We took an unscientific look at the new wireless emergency alert system to see how well it works.
We set up 5 different scenarios for the first national test. The question: will each phone still receive the presidential alert?

To be honest, the FCC should lift several bans they impose on broadcasters. In this case they should stop blocking TV stations from airing the alert noise when they are using it in a educational or news reporting context. They should stop blocking certain words from being aired and respect the first amendment

@Patrick Powell In this case, it wouldn't, since the mobile alert tone is not a SAME tone. They only want people to be hearing these alert tones in the event of an actual alert, not because the news they're playing in the background decided to replay the tones. If stations were allowed to broadcast them for whatever, people might not know if it's a real alert or just part a show, which is dangerous, especially for the visually-impaired.

Not really, if they broadcast it on the air and/or over NOAA frequencies then they could make people think there is a real emergency. Also some TVs Cable Boxes and NOAA radios can instantly decode what the tone sounds like, so if you where watching this on the AM/FM radio, and they played the tones, your more than likely either going to get an EMERGENCY ACTION NOTIFICATION or UNRECOGNIZED MESSAGE

The station has a SAME decoder that automatically decodes the tones sent to the station via the government office. If the noise is played on live tv clear enough, the decoder will read the SAME tone and issue an alert via television as if it was a real alert, no matter if it was sent by a government office or played in the studio directly, the SAME decoder is responsible for listening for the SAME header 24/7

It'll still receive alerts while in range of a compatible tower. You can also still make 911 calls through it, per FCC requirements.

If you are comparing an iPhone to an Android, you should use the same Android device across all scenarios instead of different models since EAS systems usually require extra radio devices that some Android devices may not have. So it may be that in your tests, Android could have passed all of the marks but couldn't because the devices did not have any consistency.

It should work. If you don't have signal it still says something in the lines of"emergency calls only". Thats because of the way these emergency systems are setup. They have to connect you through ANY wireless network aviable, private, military ect. The other thing is if the country even has something like this. I'm pretty sure my country does not have emergency system like this.
