So I did a little portrait shoot while the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom to test out the GH5. I've been shooting a lot more video with the GH5 but I was surprised at how good the Autofocus is when it comes to photography.
If you want to buy a GH5 or anything in this video you can get one from the links below.

Thanks for this tutorial, I'm also in this 10%. I'm a videographer but I've been asked to do the photography at a family wedding in a few week's time. I've got a GH5 with the Sigma 18-35 and Metabones speedbooster. I also own a Canon 70D. Faced with that choice, would you go with the GH5 or the 70D as your primary camera for the shoot?

Wow, well done! I've searched Instagram extensively for gh5 photography and the photos you've produced here are the best I've seen so far hands down! I've just bought the gh5 for video (I still use my 80d for photography jobs) haven't been out and about with it just yet because the weather has been awful the past few days, but it's really good to know that the Gh5 can take decent photographs if it's the only camera I have on hand. Thanks for the video and it's the first I have seen that concentrates on the stills side and interestingly the first I have seen using the metabones on the GH5 with the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for stills 😊👍Really wasn't expecting the focusing to be that quick as there seem to be a number of reports claiming it to be really slow. I also use MFT for 90% stills and have just received my GH5.. and so far very impressed..lenses I use include the Oly 75mm f1.8 and the Oly 25mm f1.8..both offer great results...thanks again and please keep up the great content..

I have a gh5 and am wondering if there is a use for the 4k/6k photo mode outside of quickly moving subjects. If the camera normally takes 20 mp photos, why use a slower and clunkier mode that will leave you with an 18 mp image? Legitimately curious about this as I basically do not use the 4k/6k other than for animals that might run away.

I totally agree. The auto focus in photos mode is great. Continuous focus tracking in photos is even more than great, it's close to amazing. Touch an object and it tracks really really well. It's totally beyond me why the video auto focus isn't on pair.. The colours though. I think there's a strange green yellow cast error in everything Panasonic. Difficult to put my finger on. But coming with a Fuji colours background, I don't find the Panasonic colours appealing at all.

@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 7 жыл бұрын
If you want to use Canon lenses Go for the metabones. If you want small compact lenses get m4/3 lenses. I only picked up the 42.5mm because I wanted something with the ability to get some subject isolation on that tiny m4/3 sensor. I also needed a lens to do autofocus testing with and Image stabilization. But I only plan to use Canon lenses with the GH5 because I'm using it for video 100% of the time and Canon lenses have real focus rings instead of the m4/3 focus by wire system.

@Zed ProMedia why do you prefer this camera over the Fuji XT-2 for videos?? Also, have you had chance to try Nikon D850? Can you compare XT2 and D850?
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 6 жыл бұрын
Because the image quality is far better than the XT2 for video. Not to mention picture styles you can actually grade, codecs, frame rates, internal 10bit, proper waveforms, ergonomics, Flipout screen, Amazing IBIS. Nothing else touches it for the price. As for the XT2 vs D850 not really an fair comparison. The D850 is in a different league. Especially the price.
6 жыл бұрын
@Zed ProMedia Thanks a lot for the answer! I know D850 is almost the double price of the XT2 system but for professional use do you think is there a big difference worth the price gap? (assuming we have enough budget for D850..) Also, XT2 is famous with its image quality, sharp details and beautiful colors. How do you compare these 2 systems in terms of these? (especially the color tones comparison of these two). Thanks so much! :)
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 6 жыл бұрын
Göktuğ Kral I've never used a d850 so I can't make that call. But assuming you have the money the d850 will be a much better camera over the XT2. Dynamic range, image detail, high ISO, autofocus. It will all be superior to the XT2. Mainly the high ISO performance.

How would you say the eye detection compares to the X-T2?
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 7 жыл бұрын
I would say its pretty equal until you get into low light. The GH5 seems to have a smoother animation detection box. It seems like it has a higher refresh rate as to tracking the eyes than the XT2 but I dont know if that really makes it more accurate when it comes to focus. I when I get some time I'll do a better comparison between them.

Hey man, great work on your videos. You mentioned the GH5 is your primary camera for video and XT-2 for photos, on a scale of 1-10 (1=marginally better and 10=supremely better) how much better is the GH5 for video?
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 7 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you do. But for me I would say a 9 and XT2 is a 7. The GH5 higher internal bitrates, 4k 60fps, 10bit internal 4k and UHD, 4k 60fps 10bit out, 1080p 180fps, better vector scopes, zebras, colour waveforms, amazing IBIS, articulating screen, unlimited record time, better focus peaking. The list goes on. But if you dont really do professional video and just want good 4k then the XT2 is really good! I've just been waiting to get a camera like the GH5 for the last 4 years. Because up until now the only camera that could really do all that was something that costs $40k

Funny you'd say that my friend who is a DP told me he got 13.5 stops of dynamic range with it closest thing is the Alexa with 15 stops, that's amazing. I brought it and truly don't miss Canon.

With the sigma 18-35? None that I notice. With the ND filter I use you can sometimes see a little if I have the ND on really strong.

I realise this is the most embarrassing question ever, but I'm a complete beginner so bear with me - how do you shoot photos on the GH5 and have them save as JPEGs? Mine keep saving as 2 second long 6K mp4's!?!?! I'm a 99% video 1% photo and brand new to DSLM (audio background)

sleepless1978 make sure the camera isn’t in video mode (top right dial) and also don’t press the record button. Use the shutter button. There is also a dial on the top left. Make sure it’s in single shooting.

I'll do some more photography vids with the GH5. I think it will help the people that want it for both. Honestly there are not many videos out there going over the photography side of things. Thanks for watching.

That will be awesome, definitely looking forward to those! I already have the GH4 and planning to get the GH5, so really no point to get something else just for photos, where most of my work is video. I do have one question, about lenses for the GH5, what would you say the most versatile lens is / or your favorite so far? I already have the 12-35, but was looking for more zoom range, in the 12-60... but I've heard that the electronic focusing system isn't that accurate, and it is quiet a dark lens. Any lenses you would recommend?

I have no experience with any M4/3 lenses really. I've used the pancake 14mm f2.5 and now this 42.5mm. I'm not the guy to ask. Sorry.

Zed ProMedia I have the same hunting problems in my lumix 42.5 mm 1.7 on my Olympus body in low light conditions. I found my Olympus 25 mm 1.8 and kit lenses more accurate in focussing. Good video!

Hi Michael. Olympus 25mm f1.8 and Panasonic 42.5 f1.7 for portraits/product. Panasonic 7-14mm for architecture/interiors. Sigma 18-35mm with Metabones adapter and Fujian 35mm f1.7 CCTV lens with adapter for video. Panasonic 14-140mm for street/travel/walkaround. All this and a GH5 (with the exception of the Sigma lens) fits in a camera shoulder bag along with batteries, radio triggers, cleaners, cards, etc. No more aching wrists or neck and shoulder pain from the old systems. Especially with the articulating touch screen allowing extreme and interesting angles.

thanks wen I got my gh5 I ordered it wit the 42.5 1.7 awesome lens for the money I also find it useful in some situations in video for close up shots. I'm waiting on a shipment for my sigma 18-35 1.8 wit the metabones for canon ef ..glad you mentioned those in your message and to know that's what I'm working with right now. I love my gh5 its my first Panasonic camera ever. accessories are a bit pricey mainly for me barely coming into photography and videography lol but its gonna pay off also gonna star uploading some of my work here. thanks for the info .

Gh5 looks good until you compare it side by side with the other camera systems, it has more contrast in the DR and gives the skin a slightly harsher shadows. Also the skin colors are not as smooth and have a green cast that need you to set the WB constantly but that just come with the m3/4 sensors.

Dunno about DSLR having better AF in low light. The D600 won't focus in a dim light whereas the GH4 will focus outside at night so dark you cannot see to manually focus a DSLR.

Jeff Slade the d600 is old I'm thinking of newer DSLRs like the d500.
@jeffslade1892

I don't have a D500. The D600 is still a top-end full frame camera though. The D500 has higher ISO but, big but, like most camera the telephone number ISO look like they came out of a salt grinder. At 25600 a good shot on the GH4 looks like it was printed on grainy paper, you don't get the salt and pepper. But the problem is AF, the D600 won't AF if there's not enough light. You've probably tried to use an OVF at night, if you can't see it, you cant focus. The GH4 is rather good at night photography (tripod, lowish ISO, long exposure), it will focus on stuff I can't even see (ok the EVF turns it into night-vision). An example was setting up for a bit of astrophotography probably with the 100-300 it accidentally did a AF focus lock on Jupiter (one uses MF for astro). Another example is shooting across a sea loch at night with the 49-Area, it will switch to Pinpoint to pick out a light on a jetty and lock on that.

Always try to get the correct exposure on the subject in the image. I noticed that you had to adjust the lighting quite a bit, but you would have gotten a cleaner image if you did it in camera. Just a heads up :)
