Mark, great demonstration in both parts 1 and 2. I bought a Darex M3 sharpener 30+ years ago and although it works well, it generates a lot of dust from the aluminum oxide grinder wheel and the bit itself; enough to prevent the parts (the drill holder and the adjustment screws) from turning smoothly. It seems I spend as much time cleaning up the dust as I spend sharpening the bits. Does this Vevor model create a lot of dust, or do you forecast it happening in the coming weeks or months?
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
There is some dust but not much. The CBN wheel does not wear so there is not dust created by the wheel. I tell people this and I think sometimes they don't believe me but it is true. The only dust being created is coming from the drill.

Thanks Mark for the more in-depth view of it. On the more aggressive grind it appears that only 1 flute on the bit was cutting and on the less aggressive grind it appears both flutes were cutting. I do value your opinion on it , and you've never misled any of us that I've seen. And however the cards fall I will say the name of there competitors product it's the drill doctor . I bought the most updated one they sold and have never got the thing to work. Even sent them an email and asked for help and got no response. That was a less than ideal slow motion shot. I should have done better. I was having technical issues with my video editor. It was and not recognizing the slow motion file I made so I slowed down the normal file. I really do think this was a frame rate issue you were seeing but it could have been some kind of resonance making it cut more on one flute. For sure the less aggressive grind was cutting a bit smoother. I think the drill was sharpened evenly whatever the cause.

Dunno if you are aware of it, but the best part of the demo for cut quality was when your drill started cutting around 7:14. Both flutes were pulling an equal chip~!!! That's not an easy thing to get whether by hand or elsewhere without spending a couple thousand dollars on a grinding machine. Does it work as well with Inch standard, number, and letter drills?
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that as an indication that the drill is sharpened evenly but sometime it doesn't happen even with a new drill due to a resonance. It works perfectly with either inch or metric. ER collets have a wide clamping range and center perfectly. You just choose the smallest collet that slips on the drill.

Mark, I have an earlier model to this one but it is essentially the same 13C rather than the 13D which I think yours is. On the whole I have liked it BUT there are some idiosyncrasies with it; firstly if the drill size is not exactly as per the stamping on the collets (which are not normal ER20 collets as they have the drill size hole on the back of the collet) setting the lip on the LHS of the machine becomes more awkward as you have to tighten the collet almost all the way to fix the drill's position and then it makes it difficult to line the 'lip' on the drill setter and trying to look at the drill tip while in the setter is not possible. Assuming this is done the next step works very well. For all the drills I sharpen this is as far as I go, if I use the 'lip' grinder it seems to grind too much off the drill and the 'relief' angle is way too excessive so I don't use this section. I have taken it apart several times to see what modification may be required to make it work better; so far no success. The machine is very well built and will last a lifetime so I am keen to get it to work better. I would also like to get it to sharpen drills down to 1.5mm.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I usually tighten the collet to where the drill slips a little and then position the drill. Smaller drills are more tedious but mostly because the shank if not sticking out far enough to grab. I'm not sure i under stand. Terminology gets weird. Lip angle from what I understand is the relief angle and if anything mine is not enough. If you are talking about the split point grind there are several adjustments besides the pins that effect this. Fortunately my machine came setup close to ideal so I have not messed with them. The block the collet sits in moves left to right and the small knob on top I believe controls the depth.
@michaellinahan7740
@michaellinahan7740 Жыл бұрын
@@WinkysWorkshoptrying to sharpen a 4.5mm drill bit I have to use a 5mm collet and that requires quite a bit of tightening to stop it moving. If it needs adjusting in the drill setter (LHS) then the collet needs loosening but the nature of the collets means that it has to be loosened until the second point to break the fit and this makes the drill bit too loose to adjust properly, On your machine there is an adjustment knob on the top RHS of the machine to change the lip relief angle but mine doesn't have this although there is a tiny set screw that I haven't investigated yet. My suspicion with mine is that the grinding wheel is not aligned properly and so when the lip relief grinding port is used it grinds too much or the drill's length but as yet I haven't inspected the CBN wheel's mounting. All things to keep me busy!

You were saying in this review that it seems expensive for a hobbyist, well, I disagree. I only say this because the grinding wheels alone are worth the value of the machine imo. Diamond wheels for any grinding (sharpening) applications are over priced now a days, as an example, I bought a 4" Diamond grinding disk for my Chainsaw grinder and paid $500 CDN, so imo the cost for this with two wheels and how well it works and is built, far outweighs the price tag lol, great review though.
@WinkysWorkshop

Good point although the cost of CBN and Diamond have dropped a lot. I think Diamond is even cheaper than CBN now. I guess my point is that most hobbyists could buy a life time supply of drills for the cost of this machine. Or nearly so.

I've sharpened my drills by hand for many years and did fairly well although below 3/16" maybe not quite as well. I've had a couple of drill sharpeners in the past and was disappointed with them. Mostly because it took forever to sharpen a drill. Who wants to spend 10 minute sharpening a 1/4" drill when you can do it by hand in 10 seconds? So, what pushed me to try this drill sharpener? I had 4 axles I made for a guy and each one had two 3/16" holes driller through them for a spring pin (the type that are split). These pins are designed to be enough over size to accommodate slight variations in hole size so you can normally just drill to size and forgo the use of a reamer. Anyway, I ruined two axles with a 3/16' drill I sharpened. It drilled the holes oversized. Instead of driving the pin in I could push it through with my fingers. It was a drill I re-sharpened. I replaced the drill with a new one and the holes were near perfect on the new axles. I inspected the drill I had re-sharpened and could not see why it was drilling oversize. Bottom line... Most often you can get by sharpening by hand (I have for 50 years) but there is no way you will get them as perfect as this drill sharpener or a new drill. This thing sharpens drill to the same as new. Perfect!

After watching all of these drill bit sharpening video's I figured it would be easier to learn how to just free hand it. None of these machines are plug and play and all of them require significant setup time that if you don't get right it won't work. Every one of them leaves a certain degree of confusion on how to operate them and always seems like the end result isn't quite right. Nice video but I'm not impressed with the machine at all. For that money I would expect to just stick the bit in and it comes out sharp.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 8 ай бұрын
Interesting perspective. I agree that it is high priced but it is very quick to set up. Once I sharpened my entire drill index in about 50 minutes. That's just under 2 minutes per drill. Not too bad. There was a little trial and error on the split point set up but that was a one time event. With that being said, I made a slight improvement I think should have been included in the design that allowed me to change the relief angle slightly. Out of the box the angle is okay for a drill press but with a hand drill the bit it not very aggressive. The angle is not wrong as this is a mater of opinion and preference.

@@honeycuttracing Hmmm... sorry to hear that. Maybe you missed my 4 part 1917 Avey Drill press restoration. I did use the Yes TIG welder in the video to build the stand but it was not a Yes welder promotion. I mentioned the welder to make a point however. Most often the products used in the videos make possible a project or future project. In the case of the drill sharpener... perhaps not but in most cases this is definitely true. With that being said, unless you were specifically investigating drill sharpeners I can understand the let down. The two videos regarding this drill sharpener have performed much better than most. In fact the first one was my number one video of all time in regards to the number of views in one week but, you are the 3rd or 4th person to express concern about a shift in content to reviews. So for the future here is what I intend to do. I will only review a product if I need it to use in a project. In other words, I might comment on a Vevor chuck I use while building a weld positioner. Two more things... 1) any opinion on products are always 100% honest. I always tell the supplier that I owe it to my viewers to be 100% honest. I also tell them that if a review becomes excessively negative I will abandon the review. 2) I know you are a long time viewer, I remember reading your comments many times (Thanks). Don't bail on me yet. Upcoming video plans... spacer block to increase the chuck height on the drill press I just rebuilt, stabilizing the chuck on the drill press (hard to explain) and adding a Vevor mill table to the drill press in which I install DROs. After that... I was thinking about building an Electric Buckboard Flyer. In 1923 they actually made an electric version called a Red Bug. Of course it would have all the modern electrics instead of the lead acid batter and Delco Starter motor. Not all bad..

@Winky's Workshop not saying that you are dishonest about the reviews, just fact of the matter is when see "Review" of....., more likely not even watch the video and if do, probably ain't getting a like, more than likely it's going to be disliked and turns us(HoneycuttRacing) off to the channel, here to watch things being built, get enough commercials in the videos as it is, you said your peace and this is us saying our peace. Hope you have a good one and hope your able to get back to the videos that brought us to your channel in first place!
