Don't let the negative comments get you down. You are doing everyone a service when you give an honest review. I have watched your videos sometimes for a year or so, but I am subscribing today. Thank you.

Thanks for your support. I would say the overwhelming majority of the comments have been very positive. I think most people realize that it would not benefit anyone to give a misleading or dishonest review. So far I have done reviews for three different companies and I've told them all the same. If the product is so bad that the review is all bad I will not publish the review. So far this has not happened. In two cases I did go back to the company and ask them to review the video for approval because what I was saying about their product was significantly negative. In both cases the company said to proceed and publish the video. Gotta respect that! The only real complaint I get that I somewhat relate to is that I am supporting a Chinese product. I get that... but here's my take on that. First, in most cases you would be hard pressed to find a US made product. Most product that appear to be made here are usually made in China or at least the parts are made in China. Second, the cost of US made products might be something industry can absorb but most of my viewers are home shop machinists and hobbyists working on a limited budget. I once did a review of a live center for a lathe. The center was $400 and US made and excellent quality. I got more negative comments on that review than any video I have ever published. Mainly comments like, you've been bought, or that center is ridiculously high priced, or somebody would have to be crazy to pay that much for a center etc... In a way, they were right, I got the center free and it was a tool i never would have considered otherwise. The review was honest but you might say I was bought. I try to keep a foot in reality now. I ask myself, is this a tool I might buy. If the answer is yes, then I'll consider a review.
@mikewatson4644

@@WinkysWorkshop Yes, I agree. People complain about things not being made in America, but we still make lots of items here. Most are not affordable for hobby worker due to the high quality. The hobby people, for the most part, can't afford to pay for the same quality goods as industry that is using these items on a continuous basis. That leaves import goods to fill in the hobby market. Some import items are good, some not so much. I think you are making a good choice. Thank you.

That has to be the best drill sharpener I've, in my 45 years as a machinist, and tool & die maker, have ever seen. Over the years, I've tried 3 or 4 drill sharpening machines, and none of them got used more than once or twice, they were slow, and tedious to use. I would gladly use that machine on a regular basis. I'm retired, now and don't wear out many drills these days, but, when I do, my tired eyes need help, and that machine would fix that. Great review, thanks.

Your video was so good I didn't even look for the directions and had great success! The only thing is if you do a follow-up video please make note to check under the cutting edges for burrs as that will throw the angle off on that side. Also, if the angles are way off or damaged, you have to realign and grind a few times. Many thanks Winky!

Very good review and pretty much on the spot regarding your rating and recommendations Winky. I have a few of their woodworking tools and some general measuring tools and they were "Good enough" for the cost with a bit of tweaking/adjustments, they are as good as many expensive brands. I bought their X-Y table after your review and was not disappointed since after some cleanup and adjustments it has performed flawlessly. Good video, nice to see some info on this unit. I used a Sowa brand version at an old job. The build quality was what you’d expect from the brand. I’ve looked at this tier of machine and noticed some differences but nothing that would likely impact the resultant ground edges, due to the adjustments built into the design. I don’t remember there being any way to alter the split point part of the machine, so in that respect this machine might be better. Eitherway the Sowa put a phenomenal point on everything I fed it, which lead to me learning more about identifying optimal cutting conditions and which parameters to adjust to tune a process. Good stuff 👍

The centering knob is to set the split point to align centered. It won't move until you loosen up the allen that locks it in place so it's not that the spring is extra stiff, that's to keep it raised until it is locked back in place. If it didn't get locked it would be able to move down if you put too much preasure downward. Hope that helps.

I have the MR-13B. Vevor gave it to me for doing the video but at $269 I probably would never have bought this machine with money out of my pocket. However, after doing the review I have changed my mind. In my opinion this is the best drill sharpener available. With that being said, I think the relief angle is slightly off. The drills work great after sharpening but when using a hand drill they seem to require more pressure. I modified mine. The modification limits the amount of rotation (while sharpening) a few degrees and increases the cutting edge angle. I'm not saying the original angle is wrong, in fact it might be a matter of preference. I think the different model numbers indicate what grinding wheels come with the machine. Mind has a diamond and CBN. You want CBN for standard HSS bits.

I have seen spring tension knobs that look like that top knob. To adjust it you pull the knob out (upwards) then turn to the desired position and let the knob go back in. They adjust the spring tension, although I have no experience with this machine and can't say what the spring is for. My machine with similar knobs is a wire cut/strip machine and the knobs control the spring tension for wire clamping force.

I've got a similar machine. Does 4 facet sharpening, and you get a very nice split point. I use 135° for most of my stuff nowadays, very rarely do I go back to 118°, I'm on my 3rd set of CBN wheels, but I will sit down and sharpen several hundred drill bits at a time. I've found that it's faster to use the machine, than try to do it by hand. I've also got a larger, 2 station machine that uses ER20 collets for drills up to 13mm, and then ER40 collets for bigger drills. The best things about these machines is that they never have a bad day. The grind is always on the money. Regards Greg

Thanks for the comment Greg. I'm curious, how does it do the facet grind and why do you prefer the 135 grind?
@theshed8802
@theshed8802 Жыл бұрын
@Winky's Workshop the 4 facet is essentially an exaggerated split point. You set it up the same. It just takes a lot more off. Where yours just touches the tip of the drill, mine goes in much deeper, and it it swings through a wide arc. My grinder uses a single stop pin on top. If you search for split point drill sharpeners, you should see some listed. As to 135°, I remove broken bolts for a living. Almost everything I do is free hand, and it is seldom easy to get too. 135° flattens the face, reduces the the amount of cutting face engaged, and reduces the physical load on my body, and wrists. It requires less power to drill the same hole. Additionally, when I am drilling harder materials, like a lot of exhaust studs, the drill will bite better. You will often find that if you have a drill that just slips around on the surface of a material, flattening the angle, and increasing the clearance facet, will enable it to drill nicely, as opposed to the standard grinds. I often modify the the clearance facets by hand on bigger drills, essentially creating a 6 facet drill to reduce the width of the face behind the cutting edge of the drill. The narrower that gets, the less power that is required to drill, but the weaker the drill becomes in that area. All that said, based on personal experience, I would recommend that everyone buy a drill sharpener of this type.

'Great review! I'm now considering this to replace my ancient Lisle 92000 and I like it for the price. Setting the dial on the left differently than the collet number may affect the final relief angle and/or amount of stock removal but not enough to worry about. YMMV I expect the dial on the point splitter to allow tweaks for the wheel position to 'split' to center. With the instructions I got lucky, I got a hands on instruction actually grinding some drills when I picked it up. :-) ( different make, but same system) Did you have a look, maybe the wheels are one Diamond and one CBN? Or do they have different grids? There are differences in machines that look very similar. Fit of the rotating mechanism. Alignment of the wheel for point spliting. Type and number of wheels. CBN vs. Diamond. Runout and wobble of the grinding wheel can be worlds apart. Alignment procedure of the drill can be different.

@@WinkysWorkshop Hey Mark, sorry for the slow reply. I just finished watching your second video on the drill grinder. Like many others that commented I own a Darex Drill Doctor. I do not know how familiar you are with them but the basics of how it functions is pretty much the same as the Vevor. The Drill Doctor is like a toy though compared to the Vevor which is more like the Darex industrial sharpeners. One can tell that Vevor had the sharpener built to a high enough standard while still keeping the price affordable to the homeshop. It takes a bit of feel to get a decent grind on the Drill Doctor which is getting harder every year! There are two things that I am curious about the Vevor though. It looks like it is built around a A/C motor plus I was wondering are the grinding wheels a common size and angle or are they using their own wheels? I know that I don't comment as much as I used to but your channel has grown so much that I hate to take up more of your time saying something that has already been said. No it does not sharpen end mills. This is a very good machine however since doing this review I made a slight modification. I put a stop on the part that rotates the collet while sharpening. This makes the cutting edge relief a bit more and makes the drill cut a little more aggressive. Much better for drilling with a hand drill. I can't say the angle was wrong because it depends on who you ask. Mr. Pete came to the same conclusion but he set the dial that indexes the drill in the collet to a higher of lower number.

Hello Mark, excellent video. One thing I might add is it is also required to remove the wheel to change the point angle. The machine does not come with an 8mm Allen wrench. The 8mm Allen wrench is required to change the drill point angle. The 8mm Allen wrench is also required to change the drill center using the knob above and to the left of the point splitter. Yes the directions are not good at all. I have also found that newer style drill bits have a fairly large overhang of the of the cutting edge over the center of the drill. I found that I need to back off the adjustment over 1 complete turn to sharpen these bits.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 8 ай бұрын
I've never seen the overhang issue but Mr. Pete backed off the setting for indexing the drill in the collet to increase the relief angle. After making these videos I ended up making stop on the rotating mechanism to limit the travel. It makes the drills would much better for a hand drill.

I may add some Points here... The WEB Diameter (The Knob on the left Side of the Machine) is the Core thickness of your Drill, the distance between the both chip . Give it a try when Grinding next Time start with the backside of the Cutting edge and work your way to the Cutting Edge. And never grind Highspeedsteel with a Diamond-Disk, makes your Boss unhappy and eats away the Carbide of the Diamonds realy fast

The knob on the left side is numbered in drill diameter not web. It indexes the drills cutting edge to get the correct orientation. I produce a product that has a lot of holes. I'm drilling through birch furniture-grade plywood. The problem is three-fold. First, the bit gets too dull after about 300 holes. Second, the bit is small enough that it's always on the extreme edge of what drill sharpeners can handle. I find tools don't work very well at their advertised extremes. Lastly, it's not just that the bit gets dull but it also gets smaller in diameter. So I'd have to cut off about 1/4" to get back to full diameter and then reshape the point and then sharpen it. For bits that cost a little over a buck each, that's just not worth it so I buy bits 100 at a time and just discard them when they get dull.

This sharpener works well on smaller drill although admittedly it becomes more challenging to use. I would say about 3/16" is the limit for easy sharpening. Smaller dill still sharpen find but you have to pay attention when you position them in the collet. 1/4" and up are very easy. With that being said, twist drill are not ideal for wood.

The reason that the smaller collets have a small bore on one side and a larger bore on the other is simply small bits tend to be much shorter than larger bits and if you had the small bore all the way through you might have trouble removing the bit from the collet. One problem at present is according to their website they have no stock and are waiting for resupply which, considering what is going on in China right now, could be a problem. The price at $289 US is a tad high for one individual but a group of two or three of like minded friends might be able to pool their resources to get one or you could sharpen bits for them for reasonable fee. I am fortunate enough to have a cutter grinder so bits to 13/16 are no problem for me. Strangely enough, the CBN wheels can be found on EBay. Now just standing there and sharpening bits and saying it looks great doesn't do any thing for me. They said the same thing with the drill doctor. Now if you had sharpened a bit then took it over to the drill press and proved it drilled the hole with no problems then that's a good review . But just by looking at it and saying that does a good job nope that does not sell me. And if you go looking on you tube at bits being sharpened you very rarely see anyone go straight from sharpening the bit to the drill press and prove it did a good job I've seen none but I used the word rarely due to I know I have not seen everything on you tube.

I did she show the drills drilling through 1/2" steel at the end, three sizes I believe. In hindsight I should have done some slow motion shots. The chips coming of the bit tells a lot about the grind. There was one aspect I touched on briefly in the video I should have covered in a bit more detail. When you index the drill in the collet holder there is a dial and a number you set to the collet size. If you set this dial higher, say one of 2 mm's higher, the drill angle becomes more aggressive. I played with this a while and decided it did best when used as intended however, this could be very useful for a set of drills used in a hand drill where it's hard to get good pressure while drilling. Maybe I need to do a follow up. Is it okay to use your name? What is it specifically you would like to see?

I just want to know I can take a bit that is very dull and will not cut and see if sharpened then put to the test to see if it will drill a hole on its on with out any help such as a pilot hole. I don't care if you use my name. If I had to guess I fall in the same category as you. I have a home shop and love to build things. I've been a welder all my life and enjoyed it very much. But I hate spending my hard earned money and the product doesn't work as advertised. Thanks for all your videos and I've learned lots from you and enjoyed following you and your builds.

Are the bearing surfaces of the cam plastic? I also have a drill doctor which in my opinion is slow and the indexing system is not very easy to use accurately. The collets are a big improvement over the universal “chuck” of the drill doctor. I’m not very smart so I could be missing something but I have never gotten a split point worth a s#*&. The instructions on my Drill doctor are on VHS which makes them even worse now days that the printed ones you had trouble with.

Cam? Everything it steel and the rotating piece the collet fits into is steel inside a bearing. The split point adjustments are confusing but solid on this machine. The only thing that bothers me is that there is no way to adjust the relief angle. It would be nice to get a slightly more aggressive grind for hand drills.

Thanks for the video. FYI- that did not create the correct split point. Rather thinned the web. Some combination of those pins by the splitting port will allow for a complete split point. Web thinning (as you performed) is appropriate as the drill shortens over lots of grindings. Examine a factory split point drill and you'll see the difference.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
You maybe correct however I did as you suggested. The only factory split point I have are spotting drills and they have the exact grind I made. I've seen what you are talking about where it grinds what I would call the heel but when I move the pins to do this it doesn't split the point completely. Maybe I need to leave one of the two pins out.

@@WinkysWorkshop Hummm, shame they don't offer any explanation in the manual (Chinese, surprise-surprise). However, next to the split point port. seems I noticed two stickers (point grind and point split). These are two different grinds. Point grinding is synonymous to web thinning, which is what you performed. Reorienting the pin will allow for a change to broaden the grind for a proper split point. The adjusting knob you referenced I believe will allow to draw the grind toward the center. I'll be interested in your findings. Thanks for the effort as this model actually surprised me.

This design is superior to the cheap plastic Drill Doctors but still falls short of a proper drill grinder. Love the use of DA collets vs a chuck, they'll be more accurate assuming the collets are ground decent (a crap shoot with cheap Chinese collets). The grinding action is where this really falls short. It operates the same as the Drill Doctor in this regard. The main issue is you grind 1 side, flip 180° then grind the 2nd. This makes getting both flutes the identical length difficult and very dependent on the amount of slop in the mechanical system of the grinder, and operator skill. If the flutes aren't identical in length, the drill will cut oversize holes and exacerbate tri-lobbing of the hole. This usually isn't a big deal in a home hobby shop, but would potentially be an issue in industry. I'm also happy to see that they used CBN and not diamond like the Drill Doctors. Steel quickly overheats diamond wheels which breaks the bonds holding the diamonds in place leading to rapid wear. I guess Darex (the original DD manufacturer and the only ones I used) wanted to sell lots of replacement wheels since the vast majority of folks probably don't own carbide drills outside of masonry bits which can't be sharpened on either the DD or Vevor anyway. I've been a machinist for 45 or so years and have had a home shop for 35+ years. Professionally, I'm currently the senior CNC tech for a large machine shop responsible for maintaining/repairing everything in the shop. I was in production whittling out parts prior to getting into maintenance close to 20 years ago. I've probably purchased a half-dozen different types of low-end drill sharpeners over the years including the original Darex Drill Doctors and always been disappointed with the results. You could get a decent grind but it took forever to achieve I ended up purchasing a Tru-Point grinder which I believe is an Italian made updated version of the Black Diamond drill grinder. I put a CBN wheel on it and I get nice sharp drills that are ground accurately and drill on-size holes taking about the same amount of time as this Vevor albeit at a used cost of slightly over double the Vevor cost. All things considered, judging by remote control, this appears to be the best design for low-end grinders I've seen to date and would be a great addition to any home shop. Because operator skill is going to directly affect the accuracy of the grind, and its lack of versatility, I couldn't recommend using this in a professional shop.

Totally agree however this one has very tight tolerances which seems to make it do very well. My only complaint. is that the it is hard to adjust the relief angle. It needs a way to adjust the angle or limit the rotation of the drill.

Interesting machine. I have the Drill Doctor. This looks to be a better machine, just more expensive than my Drill Doctor. CBN can wear out. I think it is the matrix holding the CBN particles which gives way. Same thing happens on my diamond sharpening cards. A local wood turning friend purchased CBN wheels and a jig to sharpen turning gouges. This jig holds the tool in exactly the same position. I noticed that after only a year of use, the centre of his wheels have a section with no CBN particles. Dave.

Interesting on the CBN. Maybe I should not have made such a bold claim. I will say that I'm had one for several years and its exactly the same as new. Your friend may or may not have had a high quality wheel. As a turner, that is not something I've heard of as an issue. Also, one should not apply much pressure against the CBN wheel. Where is the relief angle
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Because its a radius grind the relief is hard to measure. As near as I can tell its about 10 to 12 at the cutting edge but becomes more extreme just after the leading edge kind of like a facetted grind. If you are talking about the extreme relief on the back side of the flutes there is more than enough relief in my opinion. It's possible that these extreme grinds might aid in chip removal but I've never notice any improvement. I never see them in the major brand names known for high quality... but maybe I'm not understanding your question.
