Rae did explain this in the video, but Anish Kapoor is a sculptor who bought the exclusive rights to use Vantablack in his artwork, meaning he essentially stuck a deal that means no other artist can use Vantablack, or they'll be hit with a lawsuit. Kind of like copyright, in a way. Stuart Semple, who made the paint featured here, was PISSED about this (and in general his view is that exclusivity like this greatly diminishes creativity) and started making pigments that anyone can use. Anyone except Anish Kapoor.

The whole Anish Kapoor situation might seem petty, but keep in mind that this dude more or less patented a friggin' color. I think Semple's actions are really a retaliation to the ridiculous lengths that copyright laws in general have come to.

Agreed, Anish needs to swallow that disgusting pride already and cancel the patent deal. Even if we don't need Vanta Black anymore, he still rude as hell. If I ever get the chance to work with a famous artist and it turns out to be him, I'll turn right around and cancel the project outright. He's not worth the hassle.

When US patent law was updated (part of the NAFTA deal!), the bar got dripped to the floor! It used to be that a patent was granted if the thing was totally new, served a useful purpose and/or was a vast improvement over something already in wide use. Now the rules say "If it has never been patented before, fair game!" You don't even need to prove that the idea works, is novel or was your idea to begin with! So there is a patent out there for a 'Canine Entertainment System" One throws a cylindrical object, typically a tree-limb, and the dog will bring it back. Yeah, 'playing fetch' is patented! So are tostadas, tacos, chalupas, burritos... Patents were intended to be placeholders for Infringement lawsuits...now they are marketing tools. "Let's tie up a bunch of ideas that we don't know how to make real, then wait for clever folks to actually do the hard work." "Then we sue their eyes out when they go to market." Patent Trolls should be required to demonstrate their knowledge of the thing in open Court, without notes. "If you really invented this, you should know how to make one that works."

I've got it and it's underwhelming. It's just a really fluorescent pink, and I've seen colours that are way more retina-burning. Now his glow paints, *they're* freaking crazy. Fully charged, it's like having a torch or phone screen on, and even after 2 days of being covered up, there is still an afterglow.

I love this concept so much. However, there is something important I want to say. Painting black 3.0 on lightbulbs can be dangerous since black paint is essentially absorbing light/ energy. The paint can heat up really fast and create a fire hazard. I wish you can add a precaution in the video to prevent children from doing similar experiments at home.

The good news here though is that loads of people have converted to LED lights which emit a much less powerful wavelength and would massively delay the heating up of the bulb as we think of it in the traditional sense. What's more, even if the temperature was to arrive at a critical point within the LED, it will just fail and die, and that point would happen well before any point of ignition could occur. SWITCH TO LED LIGHT BULBS! :)

I have a theory: maybe it's because of the 'roughness' of charcoal that it traps light with its pigments. Maybe the paint's function is the same as well

The rough texture actually contributes to reflection of light rays. The emissivity factor of the body decides to what extent light will be absorbed (smoother surfaces have higher emmisivity)

You could just spray a fixative over the charcoal powder and it won't smudge. Or mix the powder with an acrylic binder making your acrylic paint. Probably cheaper than black 3.0 too
