3:51 Ultrasonic sensors are not the equipment used for the rear cross traffic alert. There are two radar sensors located in the left and right corners of the rear bumper, which deliver the necessary data for the rear cross traffic alert and also detect the cars in the blind spot for your blind spot monitoring system.

Assuming the driver isn’t dying or incapable of driving, HDA 2 is a really useful system in daily driving. Works great from 0 mph to full speed and back to 0.
@pine111
@pine111 7 ай бұрын
But so many other systems are also great for daily driving and don’t send you flying off the road or into something/someone if you become incapacitated. This type of behavior is unacceptable from a system like this.

@@pine111 Agreed its a bad choice. But I've used a lot of other cars driver asst features and this one is one of my favorites. It simply does it better than most (not all). Other than basic ACC, driver asst on my Volvo is a mostly useless gimmick. With the Kia, I can go for hours with lane centering doing the steering for me.

I own a 2022 IONIQ 5 Limited with HDA2, and I use the ADAS all the time. It's definitely lacking in the communication department, but that's way less of an issue in cars with a HUD because you can see the green steering wheel icon turn grey/white in your peripheral vision. It'll also hug the lane edges more than I'd like, though i really see it as an augment of driving rather than a replacement so thats easily correctable. It's also very sensitive to the clarity of lane-markings, and doesn't do as well in heavy rain because of that. Still, the system is really capable and good enough to trust on interstates.

The max steering angle cut-off is very dangerous, because it does exactly the worst thing in that situation: shoves you into another lane, oncoming traffic or off the road. Another 5-10 degrees would make a world of difference.

I have an Ioniq 5 RWD and this looks pretty similar to my experience with HDA 2. Just drove from San Francisco to Seattle and back and it's overall competent, particularly on I-5. On the way back I went down 101 along the Oregon/California coast and i barely used HDA due to not being comfortable with it on those curvy coastal roads. Agree that it needs to notify you when it disables the auto steering, that is hardcore training to "pay attention or die" from Hyundai/Kia/Genesis 😅.

The EV9 is doing what my '23 Niro does. As per the manual limited sight curves and hills are an issue for the HDA2. Driving on i90 west into Seattle and US26 East to Portland also I15 in Arizona (Virgin River Gorge) HDA2 helps but I will be in control on those roads. Straight roads and stop and go traffic HDA2 shines. Also the changing speeds limits can be an issue after construction was done years ago on I15, the car still slows from 70mph to 55mph, and on the mountain curves the car will slow for the curves but half way through the curve it will stated to speed back up to soon.

As for lane assist suddenly quitting, potentially sending the car into oncoming traffic - my 2017 eGolf does the same. I never understood why it would not simply put the hazards on and brake to a standstill. It can do that! Braking to standstill works fine with adaptive cruise.

I use HDA2 in my EV6 every chance I get. Though it does look like there have been some improvements since the EV9 version. I have lane changing assist but not auto lane change. I do like that it tends to err on the side of caution and give control back to the driver. Some people might see this as the system not being as confident as say Tesla autopilot but I felt like I had to fight autopilot in a Model Y more than I do in the EV6.

The outline of the car, the profile, on the video reminds me of a model car I put together as a child; where I glued the pieces together. It was from the 1910s decade. Such as a 1914 Detroit Electric, or just any large car from the era. Trippy.

Apparently HDA2 adds: Lane Change Assist (as noted in the video), Lane Follow Assist w/ Offset Driving (it'll shift within the lanes to maintain side-to-side distance) and a few more advanced ADAS/Forward Collision Avoidance Assist functions such as Junction Crossing, Lane Change Oncoming (steer back into lane when oncoming traffic detected), Lane Change Side (steer back into lane when vehicle detected beside you or is changing to the same lane as you), Evasive Steering Assist), (apparently will either change lanes or assist in lane changes when a collision can't be avoided and a swerve is needed to avoid collision)

HDA (not 2) had speed limit adaption based on map and camera based detection on my 2022 Kia EV6 Light (RWD, 58 kWh small pack). I think it had US sensors but Did not have the lane change cameras in the dash, did not have “smart park,” and I think did have some kind of rear back up warnings but not the cross traffic alerts.

In European countries, traffic is required to keep to the right side of the road, and this applies to highways as well. This means that when driving in Europe, you should drive your car on the right side of the lane, not in the centre. So for me it is strange to see that you keep your can in the centre. Safe travels!

It would be interesting to see you test Tesla on this again. It has become pretty jerky and weird on the FSD software. It brakes fairly hard into very mild corners, goes awkwardly slow, then jerks the wheel to recenter several times through a corner. In my experience, it's much worse than V11 for winding highway driving. The basic auto steering behaves similarly on the FSD software branch. I don't know about the basic free version, because they forced the FSD branch on everyone for at least 30 days. As someone who bought the car in large part for the free autopilot it had when I got it, it's infuriating.

How do other cars with driver assistance handle when 1 lane opens up into 2 lanes without the dotted lines starting immediately, such as the I-25 southbound lanes between Mead and Longmont/Firestone? In the left lane it splits into 2 and Tesla never handles that properly and centers in between both lanes until the dotted lines start again and then freaks out for you to take control.

This sort of test is interesting and valuable as technology exploration and for entertainment. But please do not make conclusions like "it is ambiguous when the driver is in control or when the car is in control" - because it is not ambiguous - YOU, the driver is always in control and requires full attention, the driver assistance systems are there to simply assist and be used as aid, not a replacement for attentive driver. In conjunction with a driver HDA can allow for a better and safer driving experience in difficult situations, like keeping centered on a very narrow road or in low light environments where the lack of aid causes unnecessary strain and stress for the driver.
@MrAdamscales
@MrAdamscales 6 ай бұрын
This comment is nonsensical - which simply underscores that the technology is currently in the "unhappy valley" of Level 2 autonomy. What, exactly, is the "assistance" being give to a driver who is required to stay in complete control? If your grip on the steering wheel is sufficient to "stay" in control, the system basically won't be doing anything useful - you'll get more tired anticipating/fighting/acquiescing to the system's steering inputs than you will if you just drive yourself. And if you relax your grip - which is plainly the intended use - then you are not fully in control. Kia's system needs some refinement, but it's also the case that this level of autonomy is the worst of both words: enough autonomy to lull the driver into thinking the car can handle curves/traffic on its own, but only when you're ready to jump. back in at a millisecond's notice - which only comes once you're veering into another lane. That's precisely the task humans are bad at,

"let's go steering without warning" ... As it's beeping for several seconds, then a more extreme beep. Lol that's not zero warning. Yes, still horrible fails the unresponsive driver. But similarly it's not like the Mach-E blue cruise gracefully saved everyone when it failed on me during a harder highway turn. Just turned off assist. I get that it turns off Cruise but still 65 mph coasting with an unresponsive driver wouldn't be good either...
