I have to admit that I enjoy the occasional MRE. It's very different to a normal meal with the functional nutrition bolstered by random treats. Like a mystery meal for one.
For the king of MRE videos visit Steve1989MREInfo at:-
/ @steve1989mre
Many thanks to James for sending a selection of these packs from Florida. It's greatly appreciated.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZbin's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

The US MREs I had used a four digit code for date. First digit being year next three being day of year 8125 = 125th day of 2018 (or 2008 or 1998, refer to package style, they change by the decade) = May 5, 2018.

Also worth noting this is pack date, not expiry date. MREs don't get expiry dates, they get inspected every three years.

I have family in the military, and they all tell me that each thing in the packet (other than the main meal) is meant to give a specific component of a 'complete nutrition' slate. That is also why they are in nearly every meal, in nearly the same quantities. The meal is bulk protein and calories, and the other packets are what your body actually needs to "remain upright and holding a rifle" as they have said to me time and time again. I have no idea of knowing if this is complete nonsense, as everything is second hand knowledge. Feel free to correct me, feel free to agree with me. But, here we go nonetheless! The 'orange drink' is the main source of electrolytes. That is why it doesn't taste overly sweet, as there is probably a good bit of various salts and potassium to keep the electrolyte balance. Most military installations are kind of hot and awful, so this is what keeps those things in balance. It is also a throwback to the days of yore when 'scurvey' was an issue, and citrus was required to keep that from taking down the entire crew. Ah, traditions with accidental scientific reasons--that nobody at the time even knew. The coffee is meant to give you a quick bit of energy, as well as a sense of "Mmm... Coffee..." while you wait for the rest of your meal to heat. From what I hear, it works best with 'warm' water. Not hot, not cold, but warm. The reason being is that both are hard to come by, so they make the flavor profile to work best with slightly-above-room-temp water. It is also a 'palate cleanser' to a certain degree. The gum is there to help 'clean your teeth' from the bits that are left over at the end of your meal, as well as to help get the saliva flowing to help the enzymatic action to break down anything that you can't get. It also helps with the fact that usually these meals are caloric dense, but they are small... So, rather than you being finished and your body wanting more food--you trick it by chewing something, to keep your belly from agitating your brain to want more food. The 'splenda' is there because it is a no-caloric-intake sweetener. A incredible bit of chemical engineering, the process is quite fascinating. And, unless you are like me, entirely shocking to the people who swear it is a "natural" product. While it might start off as 'natural' what they do to get it to that end product has never happened in nature. It also lasts damn near forever (provided you keep it dry) and that is a huge thing with these MRE's. And the more recent meals (within the last 15 years or so) are a testament to food science, and the understanding on how foods actually rot/go bad. It isn't as simple as you would think. The biggest thing is to control the level of water/moisture in the food. The less water you put in there, the longer it takes for things like mold and bacteria to eat it. Coincidentally, locking the moisture up in either starch or sugar (as the syrup on the inside of the 'french toast' is an example) can help tremendously in extending the shelf life of these meals. And the oxygen absorbing packets continue this. It really is quite incredible that a "complete meal" can have as little as 4 ounces of water in it, and still remain edible.

Plenty of people in the UK like very hot (spicy) food as well, though I think Indian inspired curries like Vindaloo or Phall (beloved of drunk people trying and failing to make an impression of their toughness) is more popular than Mexican dishes.

Yeah, I always put the heater and everything together before adding water and stuffed that into the bag with spare cardboard around it and the vent only lazily folded into the cardboard. I liked my meals as hot as that thing would get em. Also, the entree bag had a side tear because in the field that is your bowl.

As a 5th generation Oregon pioneer, that has visited over 60% of the US, I grew up with french toast, and made french toast for my family for nearly 3 decades. French (Frenched) Toast does indeed mean bread fried in an egg batter. Often in the US the egg batter is eggs, butter and or milk, and in respectable regions also adds cinnamon and nutmeg (sometimes also dried chilis for a bit of kick. In the US French toast is often just used as a conveyance for maple syrup. Also, unless you are in Canada, Maple Syrup likely to be nothing more than flavoured sugar syrup. Why? Because walmart. Again in the more pleasant parts of the US, berry preserves (Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries) are also used as a topping for french toast either in conjunction with or as a replacement for aforementioned maple flavoured sugar water. In decadent regions, the bread used is made with berries, and or fruits and or nuts. and now you know :-)
