The popcorn in the paper bag trick totally works and is MUCH cheaper than buying microwave popcorn. As popcorn is an agricultural product, every batch -- and kernel -- will be a little different, so it's probably best to start with 4 minutes or so and just stop it when the popping stops. Interrupting the heating definitely interferes with the process. There is never an exact time. ALSO, adding butter (as opposed to "butter flavored" oil) to the bag might have actually led to more burning. Butter starts to burn right around the same temperature that popcorn pops, so that may have caused some of the burning. Just melt the butter separately.
@lauradi3082 жыл бұрын
100% this. Using a liquid oil (which will distribute more evenly) does a ton to help more kernels pop and less burn. I have had ok results using coconut oil and ghee (aka solid fats) but you have to wait for the fat to melt first which leads to more burnt popcorn.

I do the paper bag popcorn thing all the time (in fact I just did it after watching this video), but I don't put the butter in the bag. That sounds like a disastrous mess! You don't need the butter to pop the kernels. Just melt the butter after (it takes like 20 seconds) and add it on. And instead of a set time I just wait until the kernel pops have slowed to 2 seconds+ between pops and then take it out. Makes delicious popcorn for a fraction of the cost of buying microwave popcorn bags and you have complete control over the toppings.

I’ve been making popcorn in the microwave for years now. I put 2.5oz of kernels in a large lunch bag, fold down the top twice and lay it on its side (very important for even cooking!). It cooks in just under 3 minutes in my microwave. When the popping slows to 1-2 seconds between pops, it’s done. There’s always some unpopped kernels, but bulk popcorn is cheap, so I don’t sweat it. I don’t add any fat or oil to the bag. It will pop fine without it. I use butter flavored cooking spray to “glue” the seasonings on after popping. My two standards are Flavacol (the bright yellow popcorn salt that movie theatres use) and a mix of butter powder (not buttermilk powder, just butter powder - it’s called “butter replacement” sometimes) & mesquite BBQ seasoning (pick your favorite). Don’t reuse the bag to make more popcorn. I’m told it’s a fire hazard. It’s totally fine to reuse it in other ways though.

I don't use a bag myself, I have one of those plastic popcorn containers, but I've found that if you add a bit of oil (I use olive oil) and then add your seasonings (I only use salt, but it might not work as well if your seasonings might burn) before you pop it, that it distributes more evenly!

Edit 2 Chris’ matter of fact voice when he said “Oh it isn’t, the internet lied to you!” was EVERYTHING I feel about this!! I think you have to use a paring knife and cut around the core first (which kinda defeats the purpose of the hack)! For the popcorn, just put less kernels. The size of the bag matters!! It should only take 2:30 min max and any oils should be added after it’s popped. Otherwise you will have a messy microwave. Sincerely someone who has done this her whole life because she has a cheap mom 🥰

To make perfect popcorn, I was always told by my mom to soak your corn kernels in warm water for 30-45 seconds and dry them off on a towel. The moisture steams the popcorn to open more kernels up. Also, I feel bad saying it, because EVERYONE loves avacado...but I don't. But I love egg sandwiches, so I might try the grater on them sometime.

The water in bacon trick is great when you need bacon bits. Cut it w scissors and add water. The water renders some of the fat out so it doesn’t splatter and keeps it from burning before it’s done. I do it all the time, works great!

I like my bacon #4 on the chart, pretty much how yours turned out. I don't like much crispy food in general, but the fat needs to not be raw-ish (like #3 on the chart). I've done that hack before. The concept is that the fat renders out more evenly in the water & you lose less of the meat to shrinkage. Once the water evaporates, you cook it as if you didn't add the water. Here's something you'll probably love: cut the bacon into pieces. Add the water & cook it as I've mentioned. Once it gets the crispness you like, add maple syrup & heat until warm. Boom, warm bacon syrup! 😋 Fantastic on pancakes, waffles or whatever you like maple syrup on.

Not a hack, but a fun and yummy egg recipe is to soft boil some eggs and peel them. Next, combine equal parts soy sauce, sugar, and water. Put the peeled eggs in the mixture and simmer them 45 minutes, turning the eggs so they soak it in evenly. Let the eggs cool and store them in the fridge in the soy sauce mixture. They look weird and are super delicious…. Only use Kikkoman brand soy sauce or they don’t turn out like they should.

I don't eat bacon anymore, but sometimes cook it for the family. I take a rimmed cookie sheet and place a cooling rack on it, then place bacon on the cooling rack and pop it into a 350 degree oven.
