I absolutely love my air fryer. But things taste better and crispier when the bottom insert isn’t covered in foil. It’s essentially a convection oven and needs full air flow to properly work. Also, I find shaking or flipping things is essential (thinking of the French toast) to get evenly cooked food when cooking from raw.

I would recommend not putting foil or anything on the bottom. The air needs to be able to flow around each piece of food in order to evenly cook/fry the food! ❤️

The issue is the foil. You’re not actually air frying because you’re blocking the circulation of the air, you wouldn’t have the bottom issue if you didn’t have the foil. It’s a problem with air fryers, I hate how hard mine is to clean, but foil isn’t a good option.

A bit more spray oil would’ve helped. I made a comment below that I use non-stick tray/oven liners cut to size as they are properly non-stick. You’re right when it comes to food that won’t stick like chips (fries), but for anything that will potentially drip or stick to the basket, I’ve always lined. (Airfryer owner since c.2011)

The cookies were raw because your parchment paper was blocking the air holes. Whole point of an air fryer is to have heated air flow from top/bottom/sides of the food so it all cooks through.

My air fryer is from Pampered Chef. It has a glass front and comes with 2 mesh trays that can be used at the same time. Also has a basket that rotates and a rotisserie attachment to cook a whole chicken. I have seen something about air fryer sheets that have holes in them they are like parchment paper with holes in the shape of the air fryer tray. You can buy them off Amazon. Any use one each time you use their fire and that way the bottoms also get crispy because the air can flow through everything instead of using foil at it stops the air from flowing through the bottom. I have an air fryer that I have not used that I think I'm going to purchase those sheets off Amazon before I use my air fryer maybe your French toast would have been cooked on the bottom as well

I cut silicone/non-stick oven and pan-liners to fit the basket and tray. I fold them over the tines on the top rack of the dishwasher and they clean well. It saves on tinfoil, parchment etc. Although tinfoil in the base basket as well will help reflect heat and make cleanup easier.

I love my air fryer and use it all the time! It won’t disrupt anything if you open it up and check on it when you want to - I do that a lot and it doesn’t ever mess up the cooking process. I also recommend that you don’t put any foil/parchment paper on the bottom, as this prevents the air from flowing properly. And it would also help if you turned the food halfway through, especially things like the French toast. Kerry Whelpdale has some awesome air fryer recipe ideas (it is through her videos that I decided to buy my air fryer!)

Edit: Ok after watching the video, I'm not sure that following tik tok recipes is the best use for the air fryer. No offense to tik tok contributors, but honestly tik tok recipes are super gimmicky are really only for entertainment purposes. I have the SAME exact air fryer, color and everything. I personally think Arby’s fries are the way to go, even better than when you get them at the actual place. And you’re definitely not ruining fries when you check on them, you should be shaking them anyway. I’ve never made cookies in mine, but I’d suggest less heat for a longer time, that’s usually the trick with most things like that. You should try cinnamon rolls from the tube! SO GOOD! Also I’m surprised you didn’t try wings! You can straight up put raw wings with a little oil (salt, pep and or dry seasonings) in there, maybe toss in some sauce? and they’re just as good as getting them at any restaurant. If you like coconut shrimp..frozen or not..so good. Spring rolls as well, there’s soooo many, I gotchu if you need some more!

How do you do the cinnamon rolls?? Do you use one of those parchment sheets, or just put them right in the fryer??
@hollypenopopper

@@anggela I just threw them in there haha! At 360 for around 8-10 mins I think? I’d check on them. And you could totally put parchment or foil down, just depends on if you want to clean it!

My favorite thing to make in the air fryer is chicken wings! They get really crispy in like 1/3 of the time of a regular oven. Soooooo good

I would like the toaster oven/air fryer combos. They do have a glass door. But i do wonder if they work as much of an air fryer as they do a toaster oven.

You should’ve gotten an air fryer oven, all the air frying plus a glass window and more cooking space! Mine even has a rotisserie, dehydrates, toasts, convection bakes, etc etc

@@dizziechef9502 instant (of instant pot) omni plus air fryer oven is great, and I have heard good things about the Emeril Lagrasse air fryer oven and the Ninja Foodi . It depends on the space you have, if you want a rotisserie or not, and price. You need a decent amount of space above it as it gets hotter than a toaster oven, but my cabinets are far enough away. I love mine and there are so many things you can do in it because it is also a convection oven.

get the instapot vortex air fryer with the glass its so much better, also if you use parchment you need the one with holes so the air can circulate. It's easy to clean even without any paper or foil though.

I think the foil and parchment is keeping the air from circulating right. It needs to be sitting directly on the tray because the heat comes from above and the fan blows it down and around but it can't if that foil is there. There's definitely a learning curve with air fryers.

If you haven't named your air fryer yet - call her Freya (Nordic goddess' name) or if it's a "he" then Freyr (Freya's twin brother in the Nordic mythology). EDIT: just realised that "Freyr" is a perfect anagram of "fryer" XD it's late where I am, ok? XD

So for cookies, I use frozen costco dough. I have it in my insignia at 305 for 10-12, I check at 8 and then gauge from there. Usually takes the whole 12 tho, no burning and not raw in the middle 😊

Forgot to mention, I do cookies on parchment, no parchment while preheating, and then on it once it's preheated because they will just sink through the grates while cooking.

I use the air fryer ALL THE TIME! I make steak (often), brussel sprouts, green beans, cauliflower, etc. OFC you need to try to make fried chicken. I'll echo the suggestions below. If you can, don't put in foil, as it blocks the air flow. I preheat often and get better cooking. Enjoy trying new recipes!

@@Smaugette Happily! Rinse and halve about a pound of brussel sprouts. I use a few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and then sprinkle salt and pepper. I air fry at 400 degrees for maybe 8 minutes. I check and shake every 3 minutes. I like them cooked and green but easy to fork. I typically drizzle a balsamic glaze over when they're done. Another option is less EVOO and add in bacon during cooking. If you do that, put cheap bread in the bottom of the AF to collect the extra bacon grease (and avoid it smoking).

🙋🏼‍♀️Hi Rachael, I wanted to mention that one of the best breads for French toast is brioche. It has this wonderful taste and texture that just works so well with French toast. Another good bread for French toast is of course French bread. It has the kind of texture that can handle being soaked in and egg wash and not fall apart, because the best part of a really good French toast is to have a nice custard to dip the bread into. BTW you might want to try adding a little Orange rind or orange flavor to your egg mixture next time. It really adds a great little boost of flavor.
