I used both. Duolingo wins hands down for me. I have learned more on Duolingo than I ever did with Rosetta. That’s just my experience.

The video missed an important point, though. Duolingo's website does not have a limited number of mistakes; only the mobile app does.

I completely agree with your conclusion. Duolingo is a great casual free experience while Rosetta Stone is an excellent source for more serious learners!

helpful review, thanks. I would go with Rosetta Stone. I'm learning French before I study abroad in Paris.

I haven't missed a Duolingo German lesson since I started 1,133 days ago. After all this time (between 15 and 45 minutes a day), I am still uncomfortable and, unfortunately, still only halfway through the second level. At this point, I'm thinking about a different learning system. Thank you for your review. Tschuss!

@@rafaelmachadosimao4512 - I just do it every day, then I check it off my to-do list. I just started using Rosetta Stone a couple of weeks ago. So now I have 2 things to check off my to-do list. 😂

You can't use Duolingo alone, you need accompanying tools. youtube videos, books, italki, exposure etc.

I have been wanting to learn Spanish since I married into a Spanish family 30 years later, I still only know words and very self conscious of my pronunciations. I have used Duolingo's free plan and tried an online free class but they were teaching "Spain" Spanish not Latin American-very different. Thanks for this informative video.

I think Rosetta Stone is super over rated and doesn't do a lot for what it costs. It doesn't really explain why words mean what they mean, and doesn't give you any grammar advice. And it doesn't really give you words that are actually used by local speakers. Duolingo helps better to build your own ideas and sentences and it's forced repetition thru using the same words in several contexts, and explaining what each word means in English as well as conjugations is a lot better for actually forming your own ideas in a language. But, with duo there isn't enough audio content, not enough speaking exercises and it doesn't do a great job at actually teaching you conversational phrases soon enough in the program. I'd say Pimsleur is best at that. But even Pimsleur tells you what each word or phrase means when spoken as well as a literal translation. Rosetta Stone is good if you actually have some base knowledge in the target language. But for languages with different scripts, it does almost nothing to teach you to read it. Duo does a much better job at that as well. So for people learning Semitic or Asian languages or something like Greek or a language with a Cyrillic script, the most important thing is to learn to read the alphabet first. Rosetta Stone just doesn't do that.

Great review. I like both options but they have a few cons. I’d probably go with Babbel over Duolingo or Rosetta Stone.

I have always wanted to learn a secondary language, maybe either Spanish or French. I took Spanish in grade school but as the saying goes, if you don’t use it you loose it. I think Rosetta Stone would allow me to become bilingual the best! Thanks for the review.

I would love to get the Rosetta Stone for $180, but it’s $300 on their website. Do you have special codes to get that price?
@TestPrepInsight
@TestPrepInsight 2 жыл бұрын
Ugh, sorry about that. Rosetta Stone has been shifting their deals around almost daily during the holidays and it's been hard to keep track of their pricing. It looks like the lifetime subscription package price reduction to $180 might be over. Sorry about that. But I do have a discount link to get the 12-month package for just $90 ($54 off the full price). Might be a good starting point. Here's that link: fave.co/3qx2qZd

@Test Prep Insight Funny story. I can get the sale on my iPhone safari but not my iPad safari. Just wanted to update this thread so others don’t listen to my first one or run into the same problem. Glad I happened to check!
