I worked 18 years for USPS before retiring. (I bought my military service time to add 4 years so I retired with 22 years service). I worked 6 days a week fo 10 years. The last 8 years, I was fulltime, so I got 2 days off a week. The work was very physical. Very stressful. For 18 years I hated Christmas. I did enjoy the customers, the pay and benefits were great. I am now enjoying retirement.

The hours she is talking about are for PSEs which are the entry level people. When you become a regular clerk you work 8 hours a day unless you volunteer to work more. PSEs are automatically converted to a regular clerk after 2 years of service. If you stay long enough to get converted the pay and benefits are excellent. I currently work in one of the plants and I make almost $65,000 a year. It’s not the easiest job in the world but it’s worth it.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I just resigned from my job in insurance because desk work and being on the phone is not for me. I previously worked for Target in the wearhouse and it wasn't too bad for my department. I feel I'm chasing money when I should get a job/career that gives me meaning in the sense where I feel I made a change. Part of the reason I left Target was that I had lazy co-workers but I did enjoy the work. I'm still on call but might go back if not I'll look for a job that gives me more meaning. I worked there for nearly 5 years as a carrier. All the things that you say about working on the plant can pretty much translate to what I went through. It was good at first but then it just turned into a soul-sucking job that I just wanted to find a way to get out of. I think this kind of work is only made for a certain type of person. I'm in my middle twenties now and it still did a number on my body especially my posture.

I quit 4 months ago after being a Carrier for 15 months. I was doing nearly 90 hours every week. I was filing grievances almost every other week. I did my 8 hr rout in 6 hrs plus 2-3 hrs of overtime and even that didn’t satisfy them. I worked at 11 different stations during my CCA period. The Union was just hopeless imo. Mandate me on my day offs. Got to a point where i was getting only 1 or 2 day off for the entire month. I asked my boss if i could not get mandated on my day off for few weeks and the reply i got was go get a work hr restrictions from a doctor. That’s where i drew my line and said fk it i quit

I know usps workers make $21+, many people that work jobs that are just as laborious as this are told they dont deserve to make more than $10. To be on your feet serving people or stocking shit for 9-14 hours, you deserve some money. Honestly it's like a trap. Poor people are working the hardest physically yet lots of us can never really save money because it's so expensive to live

People who say that have NEVER worked for the Post Office. They often work their asses off and have to put up with some very obnoxious supervisors who can make your life a living hell. Imo they didn’t pay us enough money for what I and other people had to go through. My cousin worked for the railroad, made a better salary, and didn’t have to be exposed to the type of harassment that postal workers often go through. Where do you think the term “going postal” came from? It was from people who couldn’t take the harassment anymore and just snapped.

@@MsAppassionata agree I love every cultural group but all the supervisers are African American then you gave the workers who are Bengali or Nepalese when I started this job I thought I was in a foreign country . Those accent is so thick you can’t understand what they say , I applauded them because they are looking for a better life . But those arrogance is undesirable and if you try to be cordial as an employee they blow you off . Very Discusting . Then you have black Americans all supervisers who by the way will talk down to the foreigners or Latinos I have witness it and cause me to just record and file complaints to upper management . People look so dead in that plant , no joy no working as a team . How low usps has come .

Research shows, the more an employer creates a hostile atmosphere. (16 hour days to show your dedication to the company) The fewer employees feel needed. It will burn people out fast. This is why there is a standard cap on hours. It is so the employee does not feel used and abused and actually gets up in the morning wanting to go back to work.

@@MarieAdventure Omg! I thought it was bad when I worked there. I was forced to retire 7 years ago because of a disability after working for USPS for almost 35 years. The most I ever had to work was 10 hours a day, 6 days a week but for most of my career it was 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You do have one thing going for you that I didn’t have though. You have a decent boss who treats you with respect. I had the opposite most of the time and a bad boss who is constantly harassing you can make your life a living hell, trust me. My advice to you is get your degree and use it to find a decent job elsewhere because the P.O. is going rapidly downhill. You may be able to keep up your current pace now but as you get older it will become increasingly difficult. Take it from one who knows.

I have a friend who has worked for a USPS distribution plant for more than 30 years first as a maintenance mechanic to where he worked with machines and robotics needed for sorting out the mails. His job also involved trouble shooting and this usually happens when a machine breaks down. This is basically where a lot of creativity is needed. After so many years of working as a mechanic, he decided to apply for electronic technician, and after so many years as an electronic technician, he's now a manager.

In some places like in CA. They make you work for 14 days in a row (8-10 hrs) you rest 1 day and then everything repeats itself. If the manager sees that you are picking up a good rhythm, they give you another route apart from your route.
