A review and use of the Tetra Control DMX Control unit from Venue Lighting. This is an AFFORDABLE uplight / wash lighting controller with a foot-switch. (THIS WILL NOT CONTROL MOVING LIGHTS) It is pre programmed with many colors and chase patterns which can be used to add to the level of your DJ or Band light show. Quick and easy. Thanks so much for all of your help. I finally got my ADJ Mega Tripar Profiles to work so I can now setup a nice light show with 8 of the Tetra 12s, 6 of the Venue Tetra Bars, 8 ADJ Mega TriPar Mega Profiles and 8 of the Venue ThinPars. Nothing fancy but more than enough for a great light show in my band. It's too bad that it won't work with some of my speciality lights but I honestly don't have time to set them all up anyway. This thing is great and really easy to use thanks to you.

No yellow. Still can find a bunch of nice settings that cycle through with no yellow, so it doesn't suddenly go black between colors that do work. The strobe broke pretty immediately, hopefully just the button. It is in the shop now. Way cool not to mess around with DMX. Great for small band/solo. Brightness control, speed control, Nice! I really need the strobe.

@@KrisSzanto thank you we have 2 of the Chauvet dj fourbars and 2 Chauvet slim par 56s I also have 2 Rockford battery powered floor lights that are similar to the Chauvet slim 56s pars. All have dmx in/out jacks.

@@Bluewaterboy ok, the bars will work if set to 3Ch but all lights will respond the same. The 56s also in 3ch mode will work and not sure about rockford. Rockville? Most will work as long as the dimmer and strobe channels arent included in the mix on the fixture. I would try to see if they would all be able to be put in 3ch mode and I would address them from left to right d001, 008, 015 and 022.(this will make yetra controls chase patters look correct) Then repeat the ones you want to be the same.

@@KrisSzanto Hey Kris.... I have an older Chauvet DJ 4 Bar (non-usb model). What I'm getting out of this comment is it's best to run in 3 Ch mode? I'm DMX illiterate LOL. Right now I control the 4 Bar with the Chauvet Obey 3, but I'm looking to be able to do a little more (maybe?). I like the audio input of the Venue, but if I want to go solid color I like the Obey because I don't have to turn a knob.

You simply use the 4 dmx channels as listed in the video. For the best use of the pre programs i would use the 4 in a row then start over ie address ch 1,8,15,22 then next 4 fixtures 1,8,15,22 etc... explain 3:30 in vid. Let me know if this makes sense.

Sorry, Im not sure what u are asking. But if u are asking if it is any different when using actual dmx cable then no. It is done exactly the same. Just wire from unit to closest light then daisy chain them. The dmx Address is what matters.

Thanks for checking it out Danny. Im not 100% sure what you mean, but I think you are looking to have 2 seperate outputs? If so, there is not a way to do it. The unit basically operates 4 fixtures, but you can not independently operate them. They are pre programmed. The only way to get some different options would be to just dmx particular addresses. Like skipping one. Does that make sense? This controller is great for making quick easy shows with decent, easy control.

I really do appreciate your review. It was helpful in my decision. I also found some cheap lights that worked well with this controller. It took 3 Chinese brands to find the one that worked correctly with this unit. Shame on me for saving a buck. Believe me, it was the lights and not the unit. It's a great asset.

Hey thanks again for watching. All the info is in the vid. Refer to about 3:30 for dmx addresses.. as long as u can set the fixture between 3 and 7 channels and those channels do not include a dimmer or strobe channel u should be good. Most fixtures dmx addresses are colors first. For example dmx 1,2,3 (rgb) Let me know if u have any other questions.

Got 2 ( same) fixures being controlled. But instructions were vague for a beginner, witch I believe this is designed for. There's alot of details about diff fixtures and how they are ran. I.E. some require hold while press, and I don't know ANY of the lingo,like CC,PL,Sd...... and they seem to have a impact. Do I adress a ch or setting while dmx cable is in or.....

Alot of what you mentioned is explained in each instruction manual that comes with each fixture, but if you are going to use them with dmx.... most of them do not matter (cc, pl, sd) Most of those reference pre-made colors, fades, sound active modes and such. But you have to look at the manual as they may vary by manufacturer, but do tend to be similarities. Dmx CH selection can generally be done at anytime. Just dial in the address and press enter. When it comes to dmx there are loads of djs who dont want to know anything about it, just want to push a remote and have a light show which is fine. But for me who likes to have a light go to a door, the center of a dance floor, or a cake when I want.... dmx is for me. Please let me know if this helps or if you have any questions. If i use one wireless dmx send and then have 11 fixtures on receivers, that would work, yes? It would automatically divvy them up to be different sections as far as the chase patterns and such are concerned? Or would i need a separate device to tell each light what to do? Thanks in advance!

Basically this controller works in banks of 4. You can send the dmx signal to as many wash lights as you want as long as they are addressed to 1 of the 4 channels. (1, 8, 15, 22) Each bank controls up to 7 channels depending on the fixture and settings you choose. You must make sure that your dmx channels do not include dimmer or strobe. Check you manual...most dmx wash lights first few channels are dedicated to colors and that is what you need to use this great liitle controller.

Thanks for checking it out and commenting. U would have to check the hex manual to if the dmx setting allow you to use a channel mode that does not have unit dimmer or strobe. Usually a 3 or 5 channel option. (ie - channels 1,2,3 are Red, Green, Blue)

No, You can not. The pre sets can not be altered. You can only adjust speed, fade, brightness etc..

I am a guitar/singer with a drummer and we just bought 2 ledbars and 2 led pars, all dmx-compatible. We want to control our lightshow ourselves. With the footswitch, can you easily turn them all to blue, then (on next song) all to green, then all to white, then launch a preset which could be shower-effect on ledbars , or this kind of effect, and then simply select all blue, and so on... ?

Sorry that you are having problems. I am guessing that you are trying to use the the tetra control for the little mover. As I explained in this video, Tetra control does NOT work with movers it is intended for uplights, wash lights, pars etc.. how do you like the Revolver? I have never seen it.

Hello again. It seems that all fixtures need to be in the same channel mode from what I can tell. Meaning that if I have a set of fixtures that are just RGB, I need to set all fixtures to RGB (3 Ch mode). Is that correct? I'm asking because I have the Venue TriStrip 3z and I can't get it to work with more than one color at a time. Is this a limitation or am I missing something?

I am sorry Kenn, this is only for wash type lights. I did not try a mover with it, but as per the instructions the channel must NOT include dimmer or strobe. They are really only designed to change color channels. I imagine that a mover would go crazy on it because channels 1-7 would probably be going 1-255 and effect the movement before getting to a gobo or color setting. NOT SUGGESTED. LOL... but this is a $100 or so product and does what it is supposed to rather well. :)

This unit is pre-programmed. It has pre made patterns and colors. You will not do any programming. Did you purchase tetra lights? What are you using it with? This unit is for wash or uplight style lights, but does not work with all of them.

Got the Tetra bar 12, love it, very bright, love the way the lights will fade color across. But I put my 2 Chauvets in 3ch mode, one addressed to d1, the Tetra at d8 and the 2nd Chauvet at d15. When I put the Tetra bar in 28 ch mode only 9 of the lights work. I went through all the ch options and the only way all 12 lights work/fade/strobe as they should is in 3ch mode. Kind of a bummer since I like the look of 3 lights working in a group but not a deal breaker. Actually thinking of selling the older Chauvet and getting a 2nd Tetra bar. We'll see what happens. The bar should work in 28 ch just fine with the tetra control. It needs to be addressed Ch 001 to work in 28ch mode. Try that. See the controller is only putting out 4 sets of 7ch... so by starting at 8 you are losing the last set...makes sense. :)

@@chrisashenberg5188 that's up to you. The Tetra bar in 28 ch mode uses 4 sets of 3 lights individually on the bar so essentially operates as all 4 fixtures in 1. If u want to use it as 1 light u can leave it the way u have it. Understand? If u use a chase pattern from tetra control for instance that goes from right to left the first 3 lights will then be followed by the next 3 then the next 3 then the next 3. Like 4 lights are lined up. You can only address your lights to 1, 8, 15 or 22 to use Tetra Control. You can use them in order but if you have 3 lights I would probably use 1 for the first 2 lights and 8 for the 3rd light. Try different combos and see what works best. You can always start with them all on 1 and see what u think. That would be cool because 1 and 3 would do the same thing, but the tetra bar in the middle could do the same on some but have a variation on chases. Have fun.

Sorry, just saw this. This controller will not work with the lights you mentioned. Sorry. You might have learned this by now. This is for a non moving lights. The light alsocmust not include dimmer or strobe in any of the first few channels... must be colors on first channels.

Thanks for watching. I have never worked with a di fi unit, but if it just accepts a dmx signal and broadcasts it, it shouldn't be a problem. The Tetra control sends out 28 ch of dmx info. 4 banks of 7 and should be set up as ( Ch 1, 8, 15, 22) As long as your fixtures dmx ch settings do not have any layered function such as master dimmer or strobe you should be fine. Basically if your fixture designates ch 1, 2 or 3 one of those functions this will not be a good fit. Let me onow of this answers your question.

Hey, thanks for watching. This is not the controller you want for the purpose you mentioned. This is more of an automatic type light show. You would be better of with a basic dmx controller. 1,8,15,22. These are the channels you want your fixtures to be addressed to. On the back of your lights click menu. Usually the letter d in front of 3 numbers represents the dmx address. Under this setting make one light 001 then press enter. Next light change to 008 then 015 and 022. Then when you select the chase patterns that say L to R they should go in sequence. The lights are most likely not compatible. The channels you are using probably have the dimmer or strobe channels.

Hey, it works fine with it. It is just the same as using a dmx cable. Make sure you have your transmitter and receiver on the same channel. (Flashing led color) If that is not working, you probably have your lights addressed wrong or they are not compatible with Tetra control.

The Tetra controller is not intended to work with moving lights. However.... there is a new version coming out that will work with the revolver. It doesnt actually have a sound active switch on the foot pedal. You have the presets, strobe and blackout. Obviously if you were active in sound mode and made foot pedal changes it would remain in sound mode. Does this make sense? But remember the controller is so small that it can actually clip onto a mic stand. Super Handy for many. Also... rumor is that they are in some early stages of adding a higher end version of this unit. Not sure what it will offer yet, but rumor is more flexibility for other types of lights like movers or fx lights + static lights.

I bought one and tried getting it to work tonight. I have a number of various types of lights including Chauvet, ADJ and Venue. I'm setting it up in my office so I just brought 3 Venue Thinpars up and connected just one for now. I set the light to 3 Channel and once pressing Enter, d001 appeared so I pressed enter. The only thing that is working on the light is when I press All On, Blackout or Strobe. I've tried turning both the Preset and Color/Mood knobs and also clicked on them but nothing happens. Any ideas what I'm missing?.

Hi, did u figure it out. Sounds like you are set up correctly. 3ch and 001. I dont know if you need to press enter or not on the thinpars on the dmx channel. With the ALL ON button lit. You should be able to change colors by turning and pushing color knob. (Dimmer up, cycle off) Using a dmx cable? Not a speaker/mic cable? Transmitter?

I am sorry I have not tried it, but knowing that it will be sending other signals to it there will be no way for you to control the moving head or put it in auto mode with the dmx signal coming from the controller.

@@byromtaylor6482 the fixture can not be in auto.. and dmx at the same time. The tetra control unit will send info for channels 1-7 and it will not let the auto modes work. Think about what those first 7 channels are. Pan, tilt, dimmer, Strobe, etc... sorry it will not work.

This doesn't work properly with the cheap amazon dmx par lights. The amazon lights designate channel one as the dimmer channel, but the tetra only works with lights where channel one is designated as the red light value. I setup 4 par lights on a tree, i can get a few blinking light patterns, but no blue leds work, and like only two moods are accurate. The backout button seems to work. Also the kinta mini does not work with this. Would be awesome if tetra could make a v2 with the option to assign the rgb channels within each bank.

Venue is working on a upgraded version. The new version should work with some moving lights and effects lights. It will work off of 4ch i believe.. but similarly the lights will have to be rgb ch 1 2 3 4 no dimmer strobe in those ch. Pretty much like this unit.

It works with many brands of lights.... but as noted in this video it doesnt work with moving lights. Sorry, hope a salesperson didnt lead you the wrong way. Its more for up or wash lights. Also there are specs for how the lights dmx profiles must be for it to work. So not all lights are compatible.

@@rwd52 Sorry Ron. The best control you can get with any dmx light is a dmx controller. This is a simplified controller for wash lights. I guess that sales guy needs to read the manual. Dmx has a learning curve and thats why little controllers like this one are popular. Any dmx controller will work, its just a matter of how many lights you want to control, how many channels you will need and some programming features. Are you looking to control more lights than this one?

Thanks for checking out the video. Plug a dmx cable from tetra control to th bar. On the tetra bar u will want to set the menu option on the back to CH22 press enter. Then use the arrow until you see the "d" it probably says 001. If so just press enter and leave it alone. If not, scroll untill it says 001 and press enter. This is the only value that will go from 001-512. This is the dmx channel. Let me know of it works.

So I asked some dumb questions before, why not try again? LOL I got the controller and had some time to play with it last night. Found that one of my Chauvet 4 bar LED's does not play well with it. It doesn't seem to have the ability to strobe or fade. Since I can get the other two (much newer and were wireless) to follow those patterns I'm pretty sure it's the old light. Will the Tetra bar 12 play nice in 3ch mode with the Chauvets? I'm assuming so since they seem to follow the controller in 3ch mode.

You should be fine. I prefer the Tetra Bar in 28ch mode. This essentially splits the 12 leds into 4 sets of 3 as in the video. I am sorry I am not familiar with the chauvet 4, but as its 3 ch dmx should be ch 1-3 rgb it should work. You mentioned it was older, so maybe the dmx channels are different than what i found online. I have the tetra control and the tetra bar. this is my first lighting ever, and I'm really struggling to figure out how to set it up. I wish this video actually showed what you do on the tetra bar once you connect it. I get that you need to use channels 1, 8, 15, and 22 but how do you do that? the menu on the tetra bar makes no sense to me. I'm so confused, and the colors are all wrong.

Hi, I do not believe this version is available withought the foootswitch. You do not need to use the footswitch, or attach it. They are currently working on a newer version which will have some minor control of a couple of their small moving lights. (On off/pre set patters) I do not know the release date or if it will come with a footswitch or not. Either way, if you are interested in using this one for wash lights as intended (doesnt work with effect or moving lights) its a fun little unit. Also, it does not work with all wash lights. Works with Venue lights and others if the profiles are a certain way as noted in the video. 🤘

@@seanmiller1498 Most likely not. This unit sends signals to up to the first 7 channels in which most par fixtures relate to colors. The moving head fixture probably uses those channels for movement, dimmer or strobe. DMX signal just sends a value to a certain channel, that channels function is whatever the manufacturer set it up for.

@@KrisSzanto I'm using the dmx channels specified in your video. (Thanks for that, I was lost) as for the type... they are not actually branded and I bought them off of someone (new in boxes) cheap. They say claim on the one sheet of instruction that they have 7 channels. On rgba or rgbw the blue lights came on... but none of the colors match what the control says and the "red" "blue" or "green" all on have no colors at all.

@@KrisSzanto so yes they list them. Looks like my set had channel 1 at dimming. That apparently is throwing everything off and creating a bit of a mess.

@@carlos97828 depending on the moving head, but most likely not. This unit basically sends info to the first 7 channels. Most moving heads have those channels for movements in my experience.

@@carlos97828 make sure the uplights u have or use will work with it. They can not have master or dimmer in the first few channels. So you want them to have at least 3ch rgb first or rgbwa

@@designraving Sorry, you will only get one color with that one light. The Tetra Bar has a function that will allow you to get up to 4 different colors in one light. (This is because it was designed to work with tetra control) I think it is the only light that will do that. The tetra bar has a 28ch option that basically receives 4 seperate sets of 7 channels. I was just looking at the triz manual online (i have never seen the light) I can see where the confusion would come in. Its dmx does have the 3 "zones' which can be controlled with a regular dmx controller in 9ch mode. The Tetra controller sends signals in sets of 7...up to 7 then the next light would be receiving on ch 8-14 etc...

i own this and some lights from different companies...essentially, this device promised DMX for dummies...but here you spend most of the time showing how awesome it is, and not much about what happened when you plugged them in and they did not behave properly...my experience is that sometimes things work and sometimes they don't...I'm about 99% sure the issue is the setting on the lights against the setting in the controller....which to this day does not seem obvious at all. right now, I'm back to what most musicians that own lights do, put it on sound control and call it good enough /sigh

Sorry you are having trouble. Did you verify that your lights were compatible with this unit. You mentioned lights from different companies. Not all work with this. As stated in this old video, the lights can not contain the strobe or dimmer in the channels used with this controller. This has been a popular unit from GC... and I hear they might have a couple of newer versions in the works.

I did find another video where a guy had the Chauvet 4barLTBT and the Tetra, he said to make sure it is on 3 channel, RGB, and he used channel 22…that worked…although from reading the manual that seemed like it was less than it could do. The guy said that this was the config that consistently worked…so I printed it and laminated it. The devil was in the details. At this point, I still don’t know what happens when I use a 2nd set of lights and set them to a different bank..I play keys, sing, run PA and now lights. Dirt simple preferred!

The dmx channels you want the lights are 001, 008, 015 and 022. If your light has a 3ch mode and that it is rgb, that will work and work as its supposed to.

You didn't show the most important part. > How you address the lights/make a non Venue light work with it< You have to make it recognize and understand the lights before you can start programming! (The number one reason people have trouble w/DMX lights)

Thanks for commenting. The addressing is the same... it is more of a matter of if the lights are compatible. If you have multiple lights, (4) you have to address them 001, 008, 015 and 021. They can not include strobe or dimmer in the chs used.. so you may be looking for 3ch options 4ch or 5ch options depending on your fixtures... refer to the manual of your fixtures and the tetra control fixture. (This info is all in the video) Sorry if you did not find my video informative enough. I should make another video as i know they are in development of an upgraded version. Help. Really want to use this Tetra controller but Im having trouble getting blue. Im using cheep U king lights. What light setting will get me started accessing all the colors? Im only getting red & green. All the variations. Just no blue?

I doesnt go through individual colors. I have white on white, but none of the other colors match. Nothing on red or blue. I get green on pink and red on yellow blue come through with white, but no individual blue?

@@jessepmathews I am guessing though that the first channel is a master dimmer or strobe? As I say in the video, the tetra control wont function with lights that have the master dimmer or strobe in the first couple channles. So I am guessing this is the problem. Sorry there is no work around for this. Many light allow you to change the CH options to where the first channles are basic rgb or rgbwa etc... but alot do not and I think uking is set to 7ch only.
