Pretty good round up of info! There're just a couple of things I wanted to clarify: 1) The unused seasonal palettes are NOT present in Animal Crossing. I discovered them in the Japanese only Animal Forest e+ (どうぶつ の 森e+) release! They were added during the relocalization of Animal Crossing and for whatever reason went unused. 2) Chestnut is 100% an event actor meaning she "traveled." Her code forces her to say a only a single dialog which was written over with Kapp'n's dialog. She was added in between Doubutsu no Mori (N64) and Doubutsu no Mori+ (GC), but scrapped for whatever reason. Kapp'n was added later. This is further confirmed by Kapp'n's actor id being a higher number than hers. 3) The NES emulator code to load external NES games was actually present as far back as the original N64 title! Nintendo probably planned on using service kiosks to add the games onto player's N64 MemPaks. Another interesting note is that in e+ they added additional "default" data for externally loaded NES and Famicom games. They may have been considering utilizing it as late as 2003!

"The DISP SW is JAPAN MODE now but this GAME is NES version." I interpret "DISP SW" as meaning "display switch" or rather "display setting", so that basically sounds like a region mismatch, with some kind of setting (seemingly related to display, but this makes no sense because both systems are NTSC) being set to Japan yet the game itself being for NES.

Apparently, the unused text bubble in Animal Island that read "hirigana" "symbols" "katakana" "english" and "numbers" is the text bubble from the e+ version used when you're typing to represent all the options for languages and symbols/numbers. I noticed that because I have played a fan translation of e+ on a emulator and have encountered the bubble when typing. Actually, I'm pretty sure all of those unused text bubbles that said things like "back" are also used in the typing menu of e+. so they were used in a text input system, so it wasn't scrapped, but a result of it being in e+, for anyone that hasn't played the e+ version, it might as well be scrapped. Just thought I'd point that out.

20:16 You're exactly right! The square and gyroid render like that because the code for their textures references N64 draw functions. The square board was meant to test how user-made design patterns display. If you replace and run the code with Gamecube draw functions, they display properly on this map. (Same with BG Previews @ 23:06; the "correct" version uses the appropriate GC draw functions.) Also, the name character name " ù«-•B¡¡ " is displayed on any character with a null or blank 'name' parameter. In Japanese it's "ジョニー・B" which is "Johnny B.", a placeholder name like "John Doe" in English.

The 0 and 1 made me think of binary, so maybe 1 was used to indicate that there is mail for you to collect, while 0 means there is no mail. I spent a few hours trying to figure out what 'DISP SW' in "The DISP SW is JAPAN MODE now but this GAME is NES version." means, but I am stumped. I think 'DISP SW' could mean 'display switch/software' based off what I searched for. I also think the message might reference the Japanese games that were scrapped, but found in Animal Crossing's code.

I don't know if anyone else knows this... but if you use a tool to get rid of all the extra data on the Animal Crossing: Population Growing The total disc file is less than 100MB. I think that stuff that is removed is either "dummy data' or actual stuff that was planned to be implemented, but couldn't be. It could also be because this was a N64 game ported to the Gamecube & that might be the reason why the iso when compressed is less than 100mb.

17:16 My guess is that may be just a japanese text, encoded in shift-jis, eur-jis or something similar. Game engine is set to force western characters and it results with glitched text. Espacially, when similar-gliched type text is shown on some of the debug menus (like, in 12:49). I tried my best to take text from still frame and decode, but I couldn't handle it :v.

Łukasz Sur something tells me it’s going to be incorrectly decoded “ダーミィ”? (“dummy”) the “«” character might be the dakuten, the “-“ could be consistent .... looks like the decoder is getting the romaji, so it’s seeing [da ” - m xi] and trying to modify that? just a hunch, because really dummy should be spelled “ダミー” as seen on the triangles earlier in the video :?

The Hazel shown in the video was added in New Leaf. There was another villager that went by Hazel and had her named changed to Sally in WW.

9:38 this seems like it supposed to say the dip switch is incorrect, maybe the nes emulator has a region switch built-in?

The 'long life noodle' thing was likely a New Years noodles item, since there's a similar item in New Horizons now.

the glitchy names i believe are untranslated japanese, but since japanese characters aren't in the game anymore, it just picks random graphics
